Sean, how did you handle stabilization on your iPhone and yet manage to keep your operation mobile and clandestine? I've read a bit and agree with you: "These phones, because they’re so light, and they’re so small, a human hand - no matter how stable you are - it will shake. And it won’t look good," says Baker. "So you needed the Steadicam rig to stabilize it." But, I agree with notesonvideo's Steadicam review: It is not an ideal solution. Lastly, thank-you for the motivation! Congratulations on Tangerine, your breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival!

I'm sure it was good intention but it was more about being the first at something. The first to make a film using iphone. It had nothing to do with the fact that you didn't have money to get a decent camera If you know anything about film making you know that you can get good broadcast quality quality video cameras at decently cheap prices. Just dont hink it was really just 2 or 3 guys filming a video sceen and quickly moving on to the next, I'm sure there was playback monitors and other stuff like that. Its what I learned on my own in school, its not about you fancy equipment, its more about your ideas and most importantly the STORY.

Recently I have been interested in using iPhone. I agree with you that some cameras out there are pretty cheap already (if not you can rent). But it's the accessories that you need for those larger cameras etc. that makes everything more expensive as well as cumbersome. Now I'm talking from a point of view of a beginner/enthusiast not someone trying to "make it" in the film world. For instance if you want to stabilize your camera to avoid the amateur jerkiness and bounce you would use a 3 axis gimbal. The ones for the iPhone are at least 3 to 4 times less costly than ones for even the DSLR's. Then you get into rack focus and you need a focus puller. Tripod will also be heavier and more costly. So for me Tangerine is interesting not for the fact that one can make a critically acclaimed feature film but that the iPhone was used because of budget restriction. Of course you need a great story and good actors as well as director etc. that will never change. I guess what I am trying to say is that if one has a great story etc. it is easier to "get it done" now with these tools than waiting to have better tools and budget. The only thing that I would miss is the depth of field control of the larger sensors. But again this becomes just another challenge and should not be a reason to NOT do it with the tools you have in hand.

It was not the first iPhone movie at all. And the writing is great! :) Also, many of us were surprised that it was shot with iPhones...
