as someone that sews, nicole would not have been able to buy the fabric and notions needed for $50, especially for her larger bridesmaids. and by the time she made 2 dresses, she would be so over it.

I have made 100s of wedding and bridesmaids dresses in over 60 years of sewing. Today, the cost would be: Chiffon $10.00 a yard, 4 yards needed per dress, lining $4.99 a yard four yards needed, pattern $ 20.00, could be shared by most of the bridesmaids, zipper, seam binding, and thread $6.00, sewing time appx 20 hours from start to finish per dress, appx $15.00 an hour (friends and family rate). People forget "homemade" is the same as how couture, hand made dresses are constructed! Those that cost thousands are handmade. It is why they cost so much. They are custom made to fit a certain body. NEVER look down on a handmade/homemade dress. It is much cheaper to buy a dress made out of a cheap fabric, in a sweatshop where thousands of identical dresses are made every day. That is why I quit sewing for people.

Sewing isn’t always cheaper these days when you factor in all the costs.

Actually it really NEVER was, unless you sewed it yourself, because people often think that they don't have to pay anything to the seamstress for her work and expertise.

Sewing in the long can be cheaper. You know the quality of the fabric and you would be more meticulous with all the steps. Especially if you choose patterns with clean classic lines. My mom had made my grade school Christmas pageant dress. I wore that dress until it didn't fit me.

I'm a beginner. I just made my first skirt, the simplest one: a circle skirt. Calculating the costs (sewing machine drained my bank account), I asked myself if a 3/4 skirt wouldn't be good too, but I wanted my maxi skirt, full circle and full lenght (it reaches my ankles). No regrets. x)

The fabric for one dress will be more than $50. Nicole has no clue!!!!

Nicole can't be a good seamstress! She has no clue the cost of fabric, cost of pattern, the time it will take for each lady. Fittings 1,2, and 3( a couple of weeks before the day) for each lady.

Nicole may be a good seamstress, as indicated by the blazer she was wearing, but sewing on cotton fabric is MUCH different than sewing on chiffon or silky or any kind of slippery fabric. She would have been biting off more than she could chew to make those dresses for all those bridesmaids.

I spent over 80 dollars making a table cover. No way can she make that dress for 50.

I was a victim of a homemade bridesmaid dress. Two of the three bridesmaids dresses were made by a friend's mother off a picture of the third bridesmaid, who already had a dress. The maid of honor wore a short, white dress. The whole thing was tacky af.

How tacky is it to go into a business and offer to do what they do cheaper in front of staff?

One could go to a department store and find bridesmaids dresses for far less than a bridal salon.

Nicole needs a reality check. Material for the gowns would be more than 50 bucks a piece Chiffon overlay, posh liner, boning, interfacing notions etc If I were making them it’d be more than 450 materials included in that price

Back in 99 I could barely get a bridesmaid dress for $150 let alone 25yrs later! If she hasn't even made evening gowns before that she's got proof that it can be done then as of right now she's all talk that she can even do it let alone for $150. This is something that women need to think about before saying yes to being in a bridal party there are costs involved.

I agree. I know of more than a handful of women who turned down being in a bridal party cos they couldn't afford a dress they would never wear again. I come from a close-knit community where you wouldn't really be able to wear the dress cos you're likely to bump into the same crowd as the wedding. Luckily I had one helluva good seamstress aunt who practically redesigned a bridesmaid dress she made for me into a cocktail dress for a work function. And there was one wedding In turned down cos I couldn't afford the dress.

I know her heart is in the right place however, making that many dresses is a daunting task. I would have the Nicole make one dress, if she can get the exact material in the exact color and see what it looks like AND only spend $50.00 including tax.

Nicole just wanted an opportunity to showcase her skills.

You don't ever let anyone in your bridal party think that they can make a dress for $50 and you haven't seen anything that they have made before. The dresses could come out looking like that shirt that Denise made for Theo on The Cosby Show😂!! That thing was ugly!! Trust yourself and have your bridesmaids to buy their dress.

At my BFF wedding, she had buy these gorgeous yey simple teal green dresses for just $75. So I know there some beautiful, affordable bridesmaid dresses out there. Also love that the friends finally accepted to buy the damn dresses. 😂

Oh yes, there are always other options. But they knew what price range this boutique's dresses would come in at. Tell the bride before the time if you have a price limit. I have also found many dresses at budget prices but some brides are a bit fussy

Goodwill, thrift stores have beautiful dress used but not expensive! Mine was $25.and it was made for me. Long veill to match.perfect....

Nichole "Seamed" to be be wonderful seamstress, judging from her beautiful blazer, but it would have been a LOT LOT LOT of work, and a stressor and time/pressure issue neither of them needed. This way everyone can enjoy this time together ! She has a great future ahead of her as a serious dressmaker ! Good luck and Best Wishes to them all !

That particular style would not have a lot of alterations because it's not fitted, except in the bust.

Years ago my girlfriend (bride) found an evening gown she liked at a local Macy’s. Since there were only 4 bridesmaids it was easy for the store to order specific sizes from other Macy’s (Size 2 and 6 were at 1 store and then sizes 10 and 16 came from a different store). The dress was less than $75. It was very pretty but in the color purple (which I hate). I’m glad it wasn’t expensive because I never worn it again. But … the bride was conscious of the cost for us and everyone was happy.

As a seamstress, having made several wedding dresses, including my 3 daughters', there's noway she can make those dresses for $50. Besides, the bride doesn't want her to and, judging by the blazer she made, I wouldn't want her to either. There are several glaring mistakes on that blazer.

If the seamstress friend wants to make their dresses so badly, maybe she can make it for the bachelorette party (if they didn't already have it) or their robes they can wear while getting ready the day of the wedding.

Nicole might have been able to buy the fabric and notions for under $50/bridesmaid, but she wouldn't have made much of a profit (if any). I've done projects like that, and if Nicole could do that blazer, she's certainly capable of an evening gown (which is actually way easier than a blazer) or eight. I think the concern was more on the bride's end, as she didn't trust Nicole to get the dresses done on time. I don't know Nicole's background, so I can't say either way whether she could have accomplished the task. It is, however, the bride's wedding, and like it or not, she gets to decide where the dresses come from. When Nicole gets married, she can make her own bridesmaids' dresses if she wants.

There was a small comment by the bride that indicated Nicole might have problems with completing things & Nicole replied she wasn't like that now. Sounds like there might be a reason for the bride to be concerned.

Going to s higher end bridal salon, you are not going to get that kind of price. That being said, I was in a wedding 4 years ago and the bride found a dress on Amazon that she like. She contacted the seller when she saw that custom orders were available and did not cost more money, but would take longer to arrive. All 6 of us bridesmaids ordered the custom dress and only 1 had to have any alterations made and it was only had to be hemed for length. We did have to take ALOT of measurements and the seller did reach out and have some of us confirm certain ones, but the dresses were beautiful and only $110. Options are out there, just got to search and shop around.

LOL. I just finished sewing 2 lovely skirts out of old prom dresses. One was hand died silk. The other was hand painted silk. The skirts are lovely. It is easy to repurpose a garment. Much harder to make new look good and fit everyone. They made the right choice.

Hi I descended from a loooong line of creative people, we are " all about" the repurposing of garments, and farm equipment, you name it we have done it. lol I wouldn't sew garments for a friend's wedding or maybe even anyone in my family. ( Except for my own daughters lol) Weddings and funerals, that is when people become irrational.

It amazes me that some people have to tell us that they " are fantastic"!

Also it’s not an easy fabric for someone not experienced in sewing with it. Her seems would have frayed through so quickly.

I think going to a bridal shop for bridesmaid dresses is the wrong way to go There are so many beautiful dresses out there that are not classed as bridesmaids dresses but will still work beautifully

As someone who's been sewing for more years than I want to publicly admit, sewing can be very easy or not so easy, depending upon what you're making. It's almost always faster for me to sew a dress than it is for me to find one in a store that fits. It's also way less expensive, and I can put extra funds into higher quality materials, such as using silk instead of polyester and still spend less than I would on a ready-made dress. I once had a boss who thought I was rich because I always wore "custom tailored" dresses to corporate parties until I told her that I see my "custom tailor" every time I look in the mirror. Both of my grandmothers worked in sewing factories, so I had two people to show me the kinds of shortcuts factory workers do that home sewers don't know to do. The other game changer for me was learning about rotary cutters.

@@ladyp3531 I'm American. I'm also the granddaughter of seamstresses (both grandmothers) who learned more than a few tricks from them. I'm at the point where I can bang out a dress from fabric to finish in less than four hours (including alterations), a pullover top in less than an hour, and a simple skirt in less than three hours. The only notions you'd need for the dress they settled on would be an invisible zipper and perhaps boning. If you want to get some serious bargains, check out the garment district in either LA or NYC. There's a guy on KZread named Gunnar Deatherage who frequently challenges himself to make really exotic dresses for dirt cheap, and he frequently visits LA's garment district.

Noted*** Don’t ask Broke Bridesmaids to be in my wedding. Got it!!

You honestly only need one or 2 bridesmaids at most. Anymore than that is just for show. Plus, the bride and groom are supposed to pay.

When we were married in our family back in the day, we purchased the fabric and patterns and everything for all of the female attendants ( including flower girls, etc.) and had everyone make them up or they had someone sew them up in just a certain way. Everything ALWAYS turned out gorgeous ( including three of the wedding gowns, including my own.) When I was only six years old, I remember watching my older sister finishing the hem on the organza overskirt of my dress when she was going to go out the door in her own gown lol. ( That is how my mind remembers it anyway.) I thought I was so special, like her, because she MADE it for me. The velvet one for my sister who is eight years older than I am was the prettiest fancy dress I had ever owned ( I was 14.)

In 1970, on my teaching salary of $6,400, I paid for my 5 bridesmaids dresses and their fittings, my flower girl’s dress, a suit for the ring bearer, my nephew’s tuxedo rental, and our simple wedding bands. Our reception consisted of cake and punch in the church basement, and we spent our honeymoon in a trailer that was a free promotion from a resort that my in-laws received in the mail. By the end of the summer, our bank account was overdrawn by $100. My husband was also a teacher, and he had spent his money courting me. He bought my diamond ring 10 years later from money earned from jobs on the side. We will celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary in May! My how times have changed! We have attended many weddings over the years, some costing tens of thousands of dollars and ending in a divorce in less time that it took to plan the grand event! 😂😂

@@brendacook6576 I am happy for you that your marriage worked out so well. I was married in 1976 very much as you were. My older sister was your same age, working as a teacher and paid for everything like you did as well. She was the one sister who actually bought a real designer wedding gown from a store! ( She had a double major in Home Economics as well.) She could have made her own wedding gown, I don't think she had time to after beginning her teaching career. She was gorgeous and that classic column wedding gown with a train was worn by our sister-in-law a few years later, then our niece, years after that. Each bride had a different shape and each bride was gorgeous in her gown. Every dress and gown was handmade by our family or close friends. I am broken-hearted that my marriage did not work out. ( It wasn't my choice) That being said, I have assisted many brides with their gowns ( I am a seamstress) other gowns, flowers, and decor. The building of the relationship with the couple and all parents being supportive is really crucial. I know what it is like when undermining is or has taken place behind the scenes. My parents had many children, and they believed this: "When a young couple comes to you and tells you that they want to be married, they usually need to be married, and everyone should get on board with it and be as supportive as they can possibly be." ( I only wish that all parents were that way, because it surely does help!)

@@bonnylouwho76 You are definitely my kind of people! We hosted our granddaughter’s wedding last September in a cedar grove on the back of our property. It was gorgeous and didn’t break the bank. Rather than have a fancy wedding and reception, our granddaughter and her fiancé managed to save $100,000 to pay down on a fixer upper. We are extremely proud of them.

good for the bride for putting her foot down, i would do the same thing. "If you dont want to pay for the dress, then you dont have to be there."

My momma tried to make dresses for the bridesmaid for her sisters wedding it was a disaster. Especially when she had two done and the others didn’t fit right. So no one but 1 person wore their dresses on the day. It was a bad idea. Everyone was frustrated and over it

My cousin just got married with groomsmen and women on her side. She wanted us all to wear tuxes, but the average suit place does not do custom women tuxes, especially for a whole bridal party. We had to get them custom made and each paid $600 between the deposit, fabric, and time that went into them. I wish I could've paid $175.

I certainly would not shop for bridesmaids dresses at Kleinfeld's! Beautiful dresses can be found for less just about anywhere else!

y’all this episode is probably 15 years old. fabric prices were less, not to mention y’all are citing prices at hobby lobby and joanns per yard, when a legit seamstress would buy it by the bolt wholesale for much cheaper if she were making several identical dresses. i fully believe she could have done it for less than $50 raw materials (back then). but, it would definitely be a lot of work. that being said, today, you could find those same fugly dresses for $15 on shein.

Oh my gosh if I ever admitted even to myself the huge cost of my having to give away fabric and patterns and MORE that I never had the chance to make up due to health and other problems.

If they agreed to 150 then the bride should cover the difference. I’m paying for my all of my bridesmaids dresses

I am with that mindset. If someone has to dictate what clothes I weat to an event and they want me there wearing it. Then they should buy it. After all, like they say it's the bride's day. So, they should not be forced to buy something they may only wear once in addition to all the other expenses. It's a weird american mindset that you have to pay your way to be a bridesmaid. So if you're poor or struggling with money you just have to go as a guest because you cannot afford to be a bridesmaid. That's messed up. The bridesmaids are supposed to be important people in your life. Your closest friends. You shouldn't be ASKING your friends to pay their way to be your bridesmaids.

@@JustAnotherPerson4U Hi, I am an American with a Celtic heritage. In our family, we have always paid for the maid's gowns and/or the fabrics and patterns and everything to make them. Everyone made theirs up or had someone else make it up. They were always pretty and very affordable. I also made matching chokers for all of the outfits. Matron of honor ( sister ) four maids ( college roommates) three flower girls. I made the flower girl baskets too. My sister made her matron's dress, and two flower girls, another sister made my mom's gown and her daughter's flower girl dress. They all turned out beautiful and were fabrics and a style that could easily be worn again, many, many times over.

Yes, you most definitely can get material within the $50 price point. Why hate on this girls desire to sew?

I am like Nicole when I know I can do better. Irrespective, I would commit to myself but not volunteer for others as it is a disaster waiting to happen because friends can be demanding. They will ruin my dream to become a professional seamstress. I am not saying friends cannot be encouraging, but these lots look like they speak their minds. I have some like them myself. Additionally, I don't want to force my friend to choose me because that is another friend-losing strategy when the friend doesn't have confidence in me... Instead of saying, I will do it for $50... show them if they like, put the boundaries and tell them exactly what they get and you want them to model for you. $150 worth of dress for $50. The $100 is their modelling fee.

That would have been soooo much work and no way she's going to buy decent material plus supplies for $50 each... no way.

I made my wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses it was not a problem for someone with enough sewing experience. Do they know she is not able, is she one who promises but never comes through? if not they shouldn't treat her as if she is like that.

I was in a wedding where one bridesmaid did the sewing. The dresses were so bad!! I couldn’t even donate it. Bride was in tears and words were spoken that ruined the wedding and some of the friendships. Buy the dresses!

The bride needs to cover the cost over $150 if she wants them to have dresses that cost over $150.

I believe is mean, is rude. To go for an app and tel the consultant I can do this. Well, if you can. Then, you should have stayed home and do it. If you agree to compromise abd be at the app. Be polite. Its like those who say I can bake a cake. Comes the day. They get to see a rubbish cake. Or after all they realise will not be cheap. The material/ingredients/raw material to do anything. No matter where on this green earth you live. Will cost arm and leg. Everything cost so much. No, bespoke handmade gowns are absolutely not cheaper, even if you only cover the cost of materials and notions. Absolutely not! Is she for real?? Can't be. I refuse to believe someone promotes their small business by making bridesmaid dresses for 50 bucks.

I can believe it, as I've done tailoring work on the side. If she can find a pattern that comes in enough sizes to fit all the bridesmaids, gets it on sale (an expenditure of anywhere from $2-$10 dollars total), buys the fabric in bulk or on sale (and let's face it, those gowns were probably polyester and not silk), chances are the only notions she'll need are an invisible zipper and a hook and eye. I've made evening gowns for less than $50. I've also chosen to use the money I've saved by sewing my own gowns to use more expensive and nicer fabric (silk instead of polyester). You have to know what you're doing. I was surprised that Nicole had never made an evening gown before. One of the reasons I almost always make my own dresses is because it's very hard for me to find ready-to-wear dresses that fit me properly.

@@figmo397 Seamstress here, I have done the same thing that you have done. Due to my health and then losing most of my vision quite suddenly I ended up having to donate THOUSANDS of dollars of wedding and bridal fabrics and trims. I had to move and it was very difficult. However, I was glad that I could donate it all to a really great cause .

I'm a larger lady and I'm trying to picture that dress on the bride's friend. Wish I could see the wedding pictures. 😊

The seamstress is delusional, you can’t make a long dress for $50

While obviously the sales girl wants the commission and has a conflict of interest, I wouldn't count on the bridesmaid getting that many dresses sewn on time.

Love her blazer but Nicole clearly has never made that kind of dress if she believes she can make it for 50 bc the fabric alone (if you want good quality) of the dress (with lining) for the amount of meters they will need will surpass 50.

The fabric would be more than $50. This seamstress is fooling herself.

If Nicole was cash restricted she should have spoken sooner. They know where they're going shopping and what the price range would be. I opted out of a wedding once cos couldn't afford the price of a bridesmaid dress that I would have no use for afterward. Not everyone can afford a designer dress. So rather speak up before the time. I am sure the bride knew she sews ..... But obviously the bride did not trust her capability for a bridesmaid's dress

I'd be damned if anyone demanded that I pay over $150 for a beach wedding bridesmaid dress and funky cheap shoes I buy also. I bet the bride is expecting a wedding gift as well! Not happening bride baby.

It will cost more than $50, but less than $150 - and yes, I'm a sewist in expensive California and it can be done. These dresses are grossly overpriced.

a lot of the huu dresses shown should be 150 dollars. I dont see any real style, they kinda allllll look the same. kinda prom and kinda over priced for sure. if the dress in only 175 dollars, its got to be polyester anyway. You wouldnt get 50 dollar a yard silk for 175 for a dress that has at least 3 yards of fabric. the consultant was just sweating her commission money.

Go to Vegas to get married and don’t take them with you. Save money.

if the bride can't pay for the thigns they want the bridesmaids the wear, then she shouldn't have that many and have less people. No one should be paying for the wedding by the couple.

So the hefty bridesmaid started complaining before she even put it on! Does she really think with her size, she has so many options?

Hey listen, I don't hate the idea. If she's a good seamstress, why not? My mom sewed her wedding attire and all her bride's maid kits because custom made outfits are a thing in my part of the world. She's promoting her business. But I doubt if she can manage a good dress for just 50 bucks with the cost of items being what it is... Unless she meant her fee per dress is 50 bucks excluding cost of materials maybe???

Maybe she was donating her sewing fee for a gift? I am a seamstress and I can see myself having done that for a family member or a close friend. I just ask for them to pay for all of the materials and patterns or for the flowers the same. I don't want people to compare or get their noses out of joint about it, because that happens in those close situations. It happens when it isn't because some people are jerks and con artists. ( Which is why I stopped helping the friends of my children. )

Kind of rude to go into s shop and start bitching about the prices.

Team Seamstress all the way !! Would have meant a lot to her and show that her friends have faith in her abilities and start off a possible career in an independent shop !! Those greedy consultants were obnoxious in my opinion !!!!! And that poor girl looked quite hurt to me , but sucked it up for her “friends “ sake ! Would rather spend more on comfortable shoes !!!

Sorry bride, making a gown is much easier than a blazer - she can do it. I made my gown for my wedding and it was cheap. I was a little dramatic as time was against me but I spent little to nothing. And I made my veil.

if the bride wants a certain dress, she can buy them for her bridesmaids. It's her wedding, so she can pay for it. They're not cheap. You can get nice dresses for a single day without paying 100+ dollars for it. My bridesmaid dress was 30 bucks from David's Bridal. Dresses worn one day for someone else's wedding shouldn't cost more than a bridesmaid is willing to pay.

@@eeriecraft1797 I think that everyone needs to figure out how they are going to do it. No maids and just tell everyone what your color scheme it. I think everything just gets crazy and expensive ( I have done it all from the gowns to the decor.) Then it becomes more about the trappings and not the couple or their marriage. Sadly so many end up in divorce, mine included when that was hardly a thing that happened. Sad.
