• SEAGULL MODELS YAK-3U ...
TBOB PETE (DEANOS DAD OF TBOBBORAP1 FAME) FINALLY GOT TO FLY HIS LITTLE YAK-3U DOWN THE PATCH,
IM NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS JUNIOR ON THE STICKS SO I TOOK IT A BIT EASIER ON HER - LOL,
AND WHAT A PLEASENT LITTLE WARBIRD SHE IS TO FLY,
PERFECTLY SUITED FOR THE DLE 20cc PETROL (OR ANY EQUIVALENT MOTOR)
NOT SURE OF HER WEIGHT AS WE HAVENT WEIGHED HER YET BUT THE BRAND NEW (STILL RUNNING IN) DLE 20cc MOTOR SURE DOES PULL HER AROUND WELL !
WE ARE USING A 30:1 OIL MIX (AS THE MANUAL STATES) AND A MASTER AIRSCREW 16X8 GLASS FILLED PROP !
THE MANUAL STATES THAT THE C OF G SHOULD BE 160mm FROM THE WINGS LEADING EDGE BUT WE FOUND HER TO BE VERY SENSITIVE AT THIS SETTING ,
IN THE END WE SETTLED FOR 150mm AND SHE SETTLED DOWN NICELY,
WE HAVE TWO 2100mah 2 CELL LIPOS ONBOARD (SEE THE PHOTOS) - ONE FOR THE IGNITION & ONE FOR THE RETRACTS / RECEIVER RUNNING THROUGH A POWERBOX SWITCH THAT REDUCES THE 7.2 VOLTS DOWN TO 5.9 VOLTS SO AS TO NOT DAMAGE THE RX & SERVOS & RETRACTS THAT ALL OPERATE ON 6 VOLTS !
THE NEW DLE IGNITION UNITS CAN RUN ON8 VOLTS SO A 2 CELL IS NOT AN ISSUE FOR IT,
SHES A PLEASURE TO LAND ON FULL FLAP (REMEMBER TO POWER HER IN GENTLY BLIPPING THE THROTTLE RATHER THAN GLIDING HER IN) AND THE SUPPLIED UNDERCARRIGE OLEOS HAVE STOOD UP TO THE LANDINGS SO FAR !
WE ALSO USED A SET OF EFLITE ELECTRIC RETRACT UNITS INSTEAD OF THE KIT SUPPLIED MECHANICAL UNITS SIMPLY FOR EASE OF SETTING UP ETC,
THE ONLY VICES WEVE FOUND IS THAT IF YOU PULL HER OFF TOO EARLY ON THE TAKE OFF RUN SHE WILL DROP HER LEFT WING (SLOWLY - DEPENDING ON HOW HARD YOU HAUL HER OFF) BUT IF YOU JUST LET HER BUILD UP SPEED SHE WILL LIFT OFF WHEN SHES READY !
THE OTHER VICE IS SHE WILL TIP STALL AT HIGH SPEED IF YOU ABUSE THE ELEVATOR ! SHE WILL TRY TO TUCK HER LEFT WING UNDER IF YOU TRY HAULING HER AROUND LIKE AN IDIOT, JUST FLY HER SMOOTH AND SENSIBLY (LIKE DEANO IN THE VIDEO - LOL) WITH SMOOTH FLYING AND BIG TURNS ETC,
WE DIDNT COME ACROSS ANY MAJOR ISSUES DURING THE BUILD PROCCESS JUST SOME MINOR ISSUES OF THE COVERING COMING UNSTUCK IN PLACES,
A NICE TOUCH IS THE COCKPIT KIT INC PILOT THAT SEAGULL HAVE SUPPLIED - SAVES YOU A LOT OF GRIEF AND TIME MAKING YOUR OWN COCKPIT !

The Yak-3 was one of the smallest and lightest Soviet fighters of WWII, and it was liked well by its pilots and ground crew. Some of it’s pilots even boasted that its capabilities were greater than the Mustang and Spitfire. Over several variations, the Yak-3 had different engines.
While this itself isn’t uncommon, it’s much rarer for a fighter to start life with a V-12 engine and then have a radial-engined option later on! The radial engine version, which is a Yak-3U, required many modifications to the airframe, but resulted in a much faster aircraft with a lower potential of overheating the engine.
The Seagull Models Yak-3 is modelled after William Whiteside’s iconic racing aircraft, which set an unofficial speed record, for aircraft under 3,000kg, at 416 mph (670 km/h) over a 3 km (1.863 mile) course back in October of 2011! Will’s Yak-3 looks quite spectacular,

We spread sand at our field every year. Use a drag bar to level it and lots of seed. Seed alone won’t fix the field. Just close it for a week after and water it. Just like a golf green. The sand does not affect the engines as it settles in. You can’t fly off it for a week min or the sand will get stirred up and possible get in the engine. No different then the dirt and grass that your on already.

Thanks for all the info guys, very nice flights and beautiful airplane! Getting mine ready to fly. Some friends recommended installing a gyro, do you think it is a good idea?

  • @tbobborap1

    @tbobborap1

    10 ай бұрын

thanks, yes a gyro will help smooth out the flying but be aware the model can be heavy (depending on motor set up) and will need landing quite fast or it will tip stall if slowed down to much, make sure the C of G is correct to the manual - happy landings,

@@tbobborap1 Well, by now I am aware that it has a tendency to tip stall and that it likes flying fast with smooth turns and stuff. I have a DLE 20 for it. Will also use a masterairscrew 16x8 as per your recommendation. Actually 3 of our club members had this model and all of them crashed it on takeoff on the test flights!!! As for me, I fly turbines and used to fly pylon racers and extremely fast EDFs so I am not afraid of its flight characteristics, it should definitely be easier to fly than a GeeBee :D Regarding the CG I will be setting it to 150mm as per your recommendation above! or should I set it to 160mm as per the manual??? I also got feedback from one of our club members who did actually fly it successfully but with an OS 120AX that the retracts' mounting points are very weak and he recommended reinforcing them with plywood from the beginning, is this actually an issue?
