SEADOO Sportster DEBRIS Stuck in Prop - How to Remove Debris and Intake Grate from JETSKI Boat

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to Remove Debris from your SEADOO JETSKI SPORTSTER Boat. Trial and Error! I thought it would be a simple fix - just take off the intake grate by removing a few bolts, getting a pair of long pliers and pulling out the debris, and slapping the grate back on. NOPE! To my surprise, there is a hidden lock nut under the engine on the inside. Watch the video to see how to fix it and what to do if you break the bolt! Apparently it’s pretty common!
Does your jetski suddenly move slower and seems to rev up but just not go anywhere? Did you possibly suck up debris into the intake and get something stuck in the prop? That's what happened to me. All jetskis and seadoos work by a powerful water suction driving it through the prop and depend on that suction to move the boat. It is probably the most powerful vacuum cleaner in the water! If you accidentally travel over shallow water with any debris, you can suck it up and sometimes it gets lodged in the prop slowing down your jetski.
I tried to make a clip showing the challenges and ultimate success of taking off the intake grate, repairing and replacing a snapped bolt as well as the threaded insert, and removing the debris! I hope it helps you!

    Great grate video! One note: the original sealant is probably polyurethane 3M 5200 or similar, which is a structural sealant. The JB Weld is Epoxy. None are silicone and silicone is not a good sealant here.

    All you had to do is remove the jet at the back 15 minutes and whole assembly comes and and rock falls out that way you can check the ringwear and replace if needed

    Just had the same thing happen to me. Did the wood do any damage to the impeller or wear ring??

    I did the exact same thing for the exact same reason 😂. However I stopped at broken bolt and removed the entire pump assembly. And removed debris and replaced wear ring . Bolt has been broken for 3 seasons no issues 🔧🔧🔧

    I had the same problem with a piece of wood jammed. All I did was use a long length of 3mm carbon fibre rod and pried it out. Worked fine. Now I always carry the rod and a flashlight with me

    That’s great! I tried everything I could find. I even ordered extra long angled plyers. The wood wouldn’t budge!

    Also when It happened again and it was really stuck on the impeller , I used a really long thin flathead screwdriver which would easily reach the impeller,and wiggled back & forth and it came out no problem Maybe I was lucky? Anyway my flashlight, screwdriver & thin carbon fibre rod are always in my car now

    Agreed, Do Not remove the grate. You go through it with a tool or pull the housing right out the back. You do not do this every time you get wood or stone in the prop.

    These boats are notorious for bolts seizing due to the use of stainless steel fasteners. I have broke of many and replaced them with steel as I only use mine in fresh water.

    The lock didn't break the bolt. It could have stayed there np. You put side force on the bolt instead of twisting only. Should have used an imact gun and take it out a bit, screw it back in, and repeat. And spray some lube on the threads when you can.

    Idk how people do it. I have owned jetskis for 25 years now and not once have I ever got anything stuck in any one of them. I have heard and seen people that ha e had it happen but as long as you don't start or dive it in anything shallower then 3ft and don't tank it in body's of water with tones of debris then you won't ever have a problem

    OMG I just bought the same sportster. Got it home and tried removing the grate. Broke the front bolt and have now spent the day on the internet realizing the awful design! I can not believe I have to remove the hoses to get at the nut. Do you think I can just drill out the broken bolt from underneath and then insert the brass insert from underneath? Any other ideas?

  • @jsurfs74

    @jsurfs74

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes it’s odd that they designed it that way. I think the newer models do not have the nut on the inside under the engine. As you probably saw in my video, I tried several things to get the broken bolt out, drilling with an extractor kit which broke, notching it so I could turn it with a screwdriver, I even tried getting a thin wrench under the engine and turning the bolt but nothing worked. I resorted to just drilling it out from underneath. 👍🏼

    I Will basically do exactly the same thing. I bought a threaded insert and stainless bolt today. I need to pick up appropriate drill bits to drill out the broken bolt. Any suggestions? Google says to use cobalt bits?

  • @jsurfs74

    @jsurfs74

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes cobalt will work great. As you drill up keep it at a slight angle toward the nose of the boat , the bolt seemed to be angled a little for some reason.
