SEABIRDS pass this one spot by the THOUSANDS

Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park is where tens of thousands of birds must pass in migration. As Canada empties out of northern gannets, eiders, scoters, cormorants, mergansers, loons and grebes each autumn, many pass this point where they are counted. Stand in this one spot along the coast of Maine and discover how to identify them even at a distance.

Been doing Sea Watch for four years, and it's HARD! It took me a while to learn all the tricks.

Bring a lightweight folding chair and sit, it’s way more pleasurable and you can still see everything. I have arthritic feet and it allows me to stay out way longer

Truth. That's exactly what I did. I have a favorite spot near the high tide line, with a flat rock to use as a table

They do, right? Four key tips help. The loon legs definitely trail farther behind. There's usually some white color showing on the loon. The loon beats wings at twice the speed. Cormorants fly with a crooked neck, head above the body. Common loons fly with neck straight out. Red-throated loons fly with heads below the body.

Bob - was the migration count in statistical typical range this season?

Still a few weeks to go. So far, I'd say DC cormorants are up, Northern gannets are down. Scoters and riders normal. RB Mergansers way up.
