Sea otter gives birth outside the Aquarium!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

It’s not every day you get to watch a sea otter pup come into the world! But when a pregnant wild otter took shelter in our Great Tide Pool Saturday, we had a unique opportunity to see it happen. (Spoiler alert: the miracle of life is graphic!) Sea otters can give birth in water or on land. You’ll notice that mom starts grooming her pup right away to help it stay warm and buoyant-a well-groomed sea otter pup is so buoyant it’s practically unsinkable!
Grooming also helps get the blood flowing and other internal systems revved up for a career of chomping on invertebrates and keeping nearshore ecosystems, like the kelp forests in Monterey Bay, and the eel grass at Elkhorn Slough, healthy.
Hey there! Hope you liked this video. Subscribe to our channel for more from the Monterey Bay and our mission to inspire conservation of the ocean:

Nah that ain't how humans do it, Otters are full of much more love! They are one of the main animals to show forms of empathy and love so she is likely getting a headstart on cuddling her babee;_;♡ which they will do nonstop for maybe forever, otters never separate and have to around loved ones or they will die from broken heart and loneliness

A little fun filled fact for you, humans are unique in that a babies head is too big for a mother's body, compared to other animals. A babies skull is made from soft plates in order to be able to squeeze out the opening.

In the animal world, mother always feels love for their baby, it's in their nature and part of their instinct. Male otters on the other hand rape and kill (eat) young otters regardless of whether or not that baby is their own. That is also their instinct and nature.

What a great video. I'd love to have an otter from a pup. What a great, playful companion an otter would make.

One of the most enduring examples of anthropomorphizing is interpreting licking as kissing. Tempting as it might be to believe that this mother is kissing her newborn, she is in fact grooming and stimulating circulation by licking.
