Props to the guy who scull-rolled his kayak with the sail up, if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it was possible to roll a boat with the sail up!

The other way we rolled up with a sail is to do a long pawlata roll and then a reverse pawlata roll. The first roll brings the sail to the surface and the second one brings you upright. The key, as mentioned in other posts, is to do it slowly to counteract the drag of the sail.

could pawlata forward and back motion be regarded as sculling? While I do understand the concept of pawlata rolling I am not sure if semantically such motion could be classified as "sculling".

Yes it is a form of sculling because the "hip flick"action you normally use with a roll is too quick and creates too much resistance as the sail moves through the water.

It actually it's easier than it looks, providing one can scull, not just C to C roll. The deployed sail drags a lot when going through the water therefore slow motion is needed to bring the kayak back up. Sculling has cemented my shaky rolls that I used to have before I learned how to use my paddle gently, without rushing.

Geil! Und die Mucke fezt dazu! :D Respeckt to the sailor who make the eskimoroll with extendet sail. Im about to buy one for my kajak and was thinking how good it would be possible to do so, when get submerged. And i think from the perspektiv of an apnoediver. Because i am either. XD

Thank you. It takes a bit of practice to roll with a sail deployed, even if I actually prefer with the sail's side stays released so it collapses onto the side (it's easier). The trick to roll with a sail up is to roll whit several sculling motions instead of a single sweep of the paddle.

Top video here gnarly, looks like a hoot. Question mate - how useful are these small 1m2, forward mounted kayak sails for cruising around and trying to cover distance? I’m in Melbourne and I’d love to do some extended cruising around the bay and also the Gippsland Lakes. I like the idea of an efficient sea kayak with a small sail on it for cruising, but not sure on their practicality. It seems they don’t go upwind well, and some people recommend skegs and rudders for tracking? What are your thoughts? Cheers, Matt

A 1m sail is the most versatile, up to 30 knots of wind. I have used sail for a long time and on long tours one can cover serious mileage without too much effort with the the right wind. I not a fan of rudder kayaks as I had a few brake so all my kayaks now have skegs. I find tracking with skegs excellent but there is a bit of a learning curve to understand the dynamics. But no kayak will track well upwind since it missed a keel, like a sailing boat. The best one can hope is a window of travel of 180 degrees (from behind and side) but no tacking.

Hello, My name is Sarah and I am an Industrial Designer. I am currently doing a school project looking at designing an integrated sea and sail kayak, where the sail would not have to be an additional purchase or attachment for the user. I was wondering if you would be able to answer some question for me. 1. How often do you take people out sail-kayaking 2. What is your favorite part of sail-kayaking 3. What is your least favorite part of sail kayaking? (ex: setting it up, storing, drying, hard to control, ugly?) 4. How often do you use the sail when kayaking? (20%? of the time?) 5. Does a sail comfort the kayaking experience? Thank you so much for your help, and if you have additional comments or suggestions, please include how I can better design a sail-sea kayak for you.

Hi Sarah, quick answer to your questions:1) I don't take out people, they join me, if they desire. I am not a commercial operator and you know: potential litigation put me off2) My favorite thing is that I can enjoy the waves much more than just paddling: a sail allows me to catch waves that otherwise could not with paddle only.3) My least favorite part is when I forget to bring a sail and there is this awesome wind :-(4) I use a sail for very outing where there is a forecast of any wind. I always have one with me on multi-day trips5) I don't understand this question: "comfort"? To me is just so much more fun then plain paddling, if that's what you are asking?
