Sea Hiker Swimming - The Secret to Sculling (Treading Water)

Спорт

A introduction to an often overlooked skill in treading water and feeling comfortable in deep water: how to get started with learning to use your hands for sculling (lift) and controlling your body position.
The key skill is to learn the skill of using your hands to create water pressure, keep that pressure constant and then maintain consistent form. Otherwise, you sink!
Secondly, most beginners make the mistake of trying to tread water with hands and legs. This is so confusing and tiring.
Third, practice in shallow water so you can experiment without fear of messing up or drowning! Keep at the basics until you can take your feet off the ground (face in the water) for 10 seconds or so without feeling like you're working too hard.
It's literally all in the wrist (and hand).
And, remember that Buoyancy Awareness is the foundation for treading water in this way.
If you learn this well, you'll never need to use your legs to stay "afloat" ever again - although it is a useful skill to learn, as well.

    SeahikerVideo does it make a difference if your hands are at stomach level or chest level when you're doing this.

  • @SeahikerVideo

    @SeahikerVideo

    7 жыл бұрын

    Not much. Most likely you'll feel more lift/support with your hands at chest level. But it is more likely that you might hunch your shoulders too much with the hands higher. Try both and see what feels best and what gives you the most lift. As you get better (or experiment), you'll more naturally move your hands on demand for what you need in terms of support. You can try small sculls (less range of motion) or larger sweeps of the hands. As long as you create pressure, it will work. Biggest tip is to be sure to bend the elbow rather than keep arms straight.

    Blow air out of your nose gently, whilst keeping your mouth closed (try humming as you do this if you need to. Other option is a good nose clip. Especially helpful learning to do (underwater/while on your back dolphin kick)flip turn . Or learning to do the suicide turn. The nose clip helps when you are learning to do reverse summer sault/pike.

    I can't wait to try this! I can't scull yet, but I can sit in the water and spin my self to the left or right similar to the way you did at the end of the video. Can this type of movement be considered "partial" sculling? Maybe I can find a way to transition the feel of that type of movement into "full" sculling.

  • @SeahikerVideo

    @SeahikerVideo

    7 жыл бұрын

    One way to learn the sculling pressure required to keep you afloat is to try and spin in circles (staying in one spot) with both hands. But you can definitely try to use only one hand. You just might be underwater.... and that's okay as it will still help you. Just do it for 10 seconds or so and then rest.

  • @TDZone70

    @TDZone70

    7 жыл бұрын

    Do you mean that I would try to spin circles in opposite directions at the same time and the opposite motions would keep me in place?

  • @SeahikerVideo

    @SeahikerVideo

    7 жыл бұрын

    Not quite, first, whether you spin or not (as an exercise) it is common for people to drift forwards or backwards (most common). Spinning helps to develop awareness of staying in one spot. Secondly, turning effectively will tend to help you develop the sculling/hand skill you need to keep your head above water for regular treading water.

    I recommend learning the buoyancy first then treading water, so you can get a better understanding of how treading works.

  • @ShawnFumo

    @ShawnFumo

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm not an expert but my understanding is the more air in your lungs the more buoyant you are. And the better you are at treading, the more it also raises you up. So I think many people settle on breathing in and out while keeping some air in the chest without fully exhaling. And you can scrull a little harder as you exhale and less hard as you inhale to keep your height more stable.

    You'll tire quickly if you are a beginner but after practising it for a few days, you'll be treading water much longer. And also its hard to tread water in shallow waters due to low upthrust force. Try doing it in a deep end and you'll see how effortless it is.
