Takes me back to the late eighties when my brother and I as kids would fish Worthing pier, when visiting a great uncle who lived in Worthing at the time. Basically learnt a lot about sea fishing from the hours spent on that pier. Not been back in at least 25 years, but can remember catching plaice, sole, dabs, small bass, rockling etc.. nothing big but always seemed to be plenty of fish around in those days. Can remember seeing a shoal of garfish under the pier supports on one trip.

Lovely stuff- I forgot to mention about the garfish - it seems like the species has changed as the storms changed the surrounding ground

@@SaltwaterAngleryeah I bet the surrounding ground has changed a lot with years of storms. Always seemed a good flatfish mark back then but can't ever remember seeing or hearing about ray or smoothhounds. Great to see they're about and being caught now.
Whenever I see a new video of yours, I get so happy 😊. Thank you
Used to fish here almost every day when I could as a kid late 80s / early 90s. Dustbin lid plaice wasnt uncommon. Eels on the edge of the muck about 1m or water. Congers much rarer back then , did hook one which was talk of the town for a few weeks but it stripped my hook on the winch up - lesson learnt. So many good memories . Great video.

yes thanks for that good comment -interesting how the species found here have changed a bit
The reef you mention runs from Worthing in the east, where it is a little over 4 miles offshore, where it is known as Kingmere, to Bognor in the west, although in parts there are significant gaps. As it runs west, it gets nearer to the coast, curving north as it nears Bognor, where it meets land. I think you have also moved Newhaven a few miles west, to Littlehampton!😊
Another great video and welcome to worthing pier, it definitely has its day, I had a look around yesterday afternoon and didn't see anything come up. Good fun lure fishing in waders over low water all around worthing. Well worth a go if you are down this way when the conditions are right.

Good old Worthing pier haven’t paced them boards for a year or more now but a great watch mr saltwater . I’m not much cop but here’s my take on past attempts …rays and conger as well as pesky dogs in dirty water and east side ( always fishes better on east side) where regulars where is more favourable than when clear but does fish well off the end ( if not closed) in early summer for bream in clearer water . Gars can be caught on east side where you fished in March close to the bottom in clear water(then they disappear) they then come back in September, west side landing stage is good then for them on calmer days ( last year a marlin was allegedly chasing garfish off the end) . September onward is good on the right tides you can fish till ten ish and a bit of darkness is a massive improver to take advantage of . Bass are always there my favourite for fishing for them is live bait ( small wrasse pout or even baby bream fished under the pier on the east side before the amusements. Favourite bait for rays is squid/ sand eel wraps, dogs love mackerel as do conger . Best I stop now before you get bored of my waffle but one last thought is how different things are now from my heydays in the 70s/80s before we lost the weed beds offshore then it was flat fish common eels mullet and schoolies.. call me nostalgic but I preferred those days 🤷 thanks for sharing your video

Love to see you in my neck of the woods. The pier fishes great sometimes and it’s dead the rest. Love your approach though it’s different to the normal Chuck it and see. Come back in September for cod and congers 🎣

Thanks mate. Yes very true. You need a plan because then you can refine it when it goes wrong !
Its not a reef its bedrock and sand . Fishes much better from september after a blow or during very windy weather in the surf
Love the pier ,just up the road from me ,don't get on there often enough Next try Selsey 👍

Done most of my fishing off Mumbles pier as a young lad and caught my biggest bass there. Think they mostly catch smooth hounds of the pier these days

Great video Matt the rain brought a smile to my face normal summer weather. Good to see the enjoyment/frustration of exploring new places. Talking about new things I have been seeing some new rods from BlackRock contental bass rods look interesting (mind you I do like the colour) Have you seen them? Do you have an option on that style of rod! Anyway always a pleasure to see your new post rhanks

Fishing from the pier, is always better as the tide is coming in or at high tide. It can become packed with anglers at weekends and at summer.

If you dropped a GoPro you would be able to show how populated that pier is.
Great session Matt Thanks for sharing at least some fish were included, even though others caught them Nice to see the area I wonder what it would be like for winter fishing Have you fished the beach there Thanks again

Thanks for that, yea I understand it’s great in winter at least for the conger. I’ve not fished the beach there but could be a good option for sure
Get down there at low tide when its blowing 30mph plus and get a big bait in the surf , big bass from september onwards

Hi Matt. I'm travelling around south coast. We are from Sheffield but we are in dymchurch at the moment travelling across from east to west in our camper. Looking to catch some mackerel in Hastings. Hopefully it's the right time to have a go. Any recommendations greatly appreciated 👍
If your going to go again .phone prime angling . They will tell you how it's been fishing and what has been getting caught . 4 hours up and 2 down is best . And a weekday is always a better option.

Good advice thanks
I've never finished there. A very disappointing couple of blank sessions. It seems that the flow was no better than the ebb tide. What a shame that you can't fish from that other platform. It didn't look too unsafe, nothing that couldn't be easily fixed anyway. Have you ever fished from Bournemouth pier? Way back in the late 1950s I always did well there. By the way just being curious what does it cost to fish there, I assume that unlike in the olden days they charge nowadays.

Free to fish ! Rare these days. Looks like it’s more structural than the boardwalk - was pleased to show some fish at least- looks like a hit or miss venue another one that owes me a fish I think

If no overhead casting is allowed. how do you cast?

I used to visit Worthing Pier regularly for photographing sunsets, never saw anyone catch anything significant. Also, when i worked ar a local hotel, we used to get all our fish from local boats, those operating within the local fishing industry gave up within a very few years. There wasnt enough fish to catch soon after joining the Common Market, even less when it changed to the EU, due to all the extra regulatory restrictions. I was hoping a vote for Reform might bring into focus our national interests, but we've got another WEF puppet government, thanks to all those people who have forgotten or never felt what it is to be British.
not so good
