🛳 Sea Day on the FIRST Alaska Cruise of 2024! NCL Bliss

Today is the first sea day for the FIRST cruise to Alaska for 2024! We are the only ship in Alaska this week, what a cool thing! I did a behind the scenes ship tour, we attended an art auction, and enjoyed the Latitudes cocktail party!

First time cruiser here! I just got off the Majestic Princess! 7 days from Seattle to Alaska and back. I woke up the first night around 3:30 and the empty hangers were banging the hell out of my closet. So, I had a random conversation with an elderly lady the next day and I said it was kind of rough last night wasn’t it? She said, oh no honey… that was smooth sailing… I was like WTF! I said what do you call rough! She said my husband got thrown from the bed one time… that was kind of rough! I was really regretting my decision on a cruise ship! But we made it there and back! I’m still loving with the ship, but I survived! Happy sailing everyone!

It was way worse on my last Alaska cruise which was in July 2019. Both times it was just that one sea day, so once you get past that, it should be smooth sailing!

With the cocktail party, they walk around with a tray of drink options. They have a mocktail Pina colada by default, but I am sure if you go to the bar and ask for a different mocktail, they will make you whatever you want :)

@@journeywiththejaneks That's good. My sister just had bariatric surgery in February so she is avoiding alcohol. I actually drink but only occasionally; on this 7 day cruise I will probably have 1-2 cocktails over that whole week, so the beverage package would be a complete waste on me. Nice knowing I may get something free at that party!

Early in the season is always going to be the rockiest... especially that far north. If motion sickness is a thing for you, you're best holding off until Mid to late summer.

I did the same cruise in July/August 2019, and it was actually way worse. I couldn't even get out of bed, and my friend who doesn't get motion sickness at all was even feeling it. Luckily, just like the last time I went, it was only this day. The rest of the cruise was totally fine.

I just booked this cruise for next year, first cruise of the season on the Bliss. Thank you for posting this, gives me an idea of what to expect. First Alaska cruise and this will be my second on NCL (first is this September, New England/Canada out of NY). So lets see if I still get seasick the first night night like I used to when I last cruised...40 years ago!

This was my second Alaskan cruise, the last one I did was in July on the Joy. This second day, same as last time, was the ONLY day of rough seas. So if you prepare yourself for this one day, you should be fine the rest of the trip! Take Dramamine the night before to get it into your system, and just stay on top of it. We will continue to post each day of the cruise, and we spent $0 on shore excursions, so this should give you an idea of what is available to do, as many shops and normal excursions still closed this early in the season.

Hey we were on that same cruise!! First Alaska cruise for us and it was awesome! SO beautiful….but those waves on that first sea day were CRAZY! It didn’t matter where you were on that ship- you felt it! I think going later in the season is better. From what I learned, the whales are more active and you have a better chance of seeing the glaciers. We were bummed that we missed that since we couldn’t get down the fjord and had to turn around. But DEFINITELY worth the trip and look forward to going again!!

The cruise the week after us reported as very calm, so it's hard to say what experience you will have. I will say that this was my second time to Alaska (the other time was in July) and both times this sea day was rough... don't be nervous, just plan for the worst. The big thing is to not get disappointed if you need to stay in the room a bit more on this day. The rest of the trip will be amazing.

@ReeceS6419 I did the lumberjack show in 2019 and did not like it... It was very little action and a lot of in-show advertisements... The one excursion I would recommend spending money on is the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. It was sold out for us, and there were no third party tours available either, since it was so early in the season. But you can have a great trip not paying for any excursions. I really dislike walking tours, as the pace is too slow for me, so we do our own through Adventure Labs with the Geocaching app. You'll see us do those tours in all 4 ports.

I don't know if it was my Dramamine kicking in once we were out and about or if were towards the middle for most of the day's activities but there was a difference. However if you're someone who gets very seasick and can't get out of bed I don't know what would make the most difference.

We finally have clear skies towards the end of the cruise, but we were too far south at that point. During the Officer Talk, they did say they see them at night sometimes. So I think it's possible, but it has to be very strong overhead activity (which we never had). For the hangers, we stuffed one of our coats between them, and they didn't clang at all (other than for the video, of course).

We monitored the aurora forecast with this website: www.gi.alaska.edu/monitors/aurora-forecast One reason I think you could possibly see them, even with the heavy lights on a cruise ship, is because we have been able to see the Milky Way multiple times on Royal Caribbean ships that allow you onto the bow (Independence and Freedom).
