Some corrections. The four projections on the sides or shoulders are actually high-speed rail guns. The Deadalus and Prometheus were both carriers that were linked to the SDF-1. You could launch aircraft from either. The reason why the ship needed to transform was because when they first tried to use the space fold, the entire fold drives disappeared. With no drives, there was a big empty void between the reflex cannon mechanism and the main generators. So they had to transform in order to merge the cannon mechanism to the generator. The transformation was basically a fancy method of hot-wiring.

Thank you, I did not want to repeat these in a comment, Also note Macross Island's Emergency Shelters were apparently hermetically sealed which is where the popultion of the island went during the initial Zentrardi attack, transferring the population over was probably harder than it sounded. One other thing to note was that with the construction of the city inside, the city need further modifications to not be destroyed during transformation and they setup sufficient green spaces within the city to supplement the air supply of the SDF-1 since it is likely that the life support systems would be overwhelmed with the addition of a cities worth of people added on top of the existing crew and an emergency space fold to the edge of the system..

The Daedalus was an Amphibious Assault Ship, not a true slanted deck Aircraft Carrier which was the Prometheus. Daedalus launched the Helicopters to recon the enemy landing pods while on Macross Island. Prometheus launched the Valkyrie combat air patrols.

@Ryan_Christopher The Daedalus can also be used as a carrier in emergencies and was mostly used as a ramming weapon due to its reinforced prow. It could deploy mostly Destroids, but can launch and recover Veritechs in a pinch due to their Gerwalk configuration.

Well, let's requalify that. My Boyfriend is a Pilot is just as horrible in Japanese as it is in English. Shao Pai Roon (Xiao Bai Long) has dumb lyrics but sounds great overall. This is IMO the best of the upbeat Minmay songs. Sunset Beach is sort of okay but kinda bland. 0-g Love is catchy but only in the "0-g Love" refrain. The better songs are actually the melancholic ones like Love Drifts Away and Kindness Sayonara because they have some effort put into their lyrics and fit Mari Ijima's real singing voice much better (you can actually tell when she sang on stage for the Macross 35th anniversary).

But I saw Frontier, then 7, the original Macross, Zero, Plus (or Plus, Zero), and Delta, so my view of the series may be a tad skewed. Also: The next Macross series will have: One (or more) love triangles (or more convoluted), a tragic death, something that songs are oddly effective against... and everyone saying Harmony Gold can go suck on a fold bomb (at a safe distance from any inhabited planets.)

Bloody Mary Sue. Watching the Anime with a critical eye the show gets painful to watch once you realize what is going on. Stop me if you have heard this one: A Bad-ass guy walks into a room where everyone wants him dead. If the people there do not open fire first, the Bad-ass guy insults them into firing first. but these guys all miss as if they were not trying to hit him in the first place, while the Bad-ass guy lazily wanders around the room killing every there, says a few witty one-liners or some esoteric (despite being total BS) observation about humanity, and walks out. Despite the fact that this bad-ass guy faces ever larger groups of attackers, he literally washes, rises, and repeats with no real variation throughout most if not all the series. Not even really a difference in effort, or even any notion of forethought, drama or concern. The only difference comes when he is not in "a room" but in "the street", or "under a tree", where things have to be different for logistical reasons or to show off yet another weapon. Most anime, reads/watches like this.

  • @Lulu-ex7fc

    @Lulu-ex7fc

@@DocWolph he was a symbol of what Humanity had lost: daring, adventurous, courageous, skilled, resourceful, resilient, Character, and honest. Meanwhile, the rest of Humanity had grown lax and complacent, content to an existence of Sloth. They'd lost the Human drive to better themselves. Without that dichotomy, he would seem like a Gary Stu but I've stated the reason and I'll state the most important reason. He maintained what Humanity lost. Even with them vilifying him, he still loves them. It's why he cried when the first alien object crashed into a city and killed so many, a tragedy Earth was okay with brushing aside literally the same day. He has to be the epitome of what a Human is to save Humanity from itself. Mary Sues/Gary Stues have no reason for being as great as they are. There's no motivation behind their existence except "they are perfect because they are."

If I remember from the novelizations correctly, half the problems they had with the SDF-1 were because it was something like 80% original Zentredi technology with a layer of human stuff gilded on top of it. And they had to launch in such a hurry that even Goval's command crew had very little idea of what the ship could actually do. So for the first few episodes, they were literally learning on the fly, while fighting a constant, running battle with the Zendtradi.

The thing is, the Daedalus wasn't a destroyer... IIRC, she was a submersible amphibious assault ship (yes...) that, along with the aircraft carrier Prometheus, was taken along for the ride when the SDF-1 executed her slipspace jump or whatever the fuck it was. So they just bolted her and the Prometheus onto the SDF-1 out of expediency, and in doing so, allowed her to continue to perform as an assault ship by way of the Daedalus Maneuver.

There is a reason why our dear Barry recommends the original Macross (Japanese version) compared to Robotech, in Macross there are variety of songs sung compared to lower budget song selection in Robotech. The original have different ending compared to the Robotech version as well. There is also some difference in technology descriptions in Macross compared to Robotech. But at last Marcoss have some needed love in this video. Kudos in that.

@@CosmoShidan Originally Macross was to be ported over pretty close to intact. Unfortunately due to syndication issues there weren't enough episodes. Carl Macek was hired to meld three completely separate anime into one cohesive whole. Super Demension Fortress Macross, Super Demension Calvary Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada were spliced together. Each had key plot points changed, music re-recorded and characters names and personalities were altered, becoming Robotech. I grew up on Robotech but was always aware of the changes. After seeing the original versions I found it impossible to enjoy Robotech as it is inferior in every way imaginable. If you are ever interested in re-watching Robotech I would highly recommend tracking down the originals instead.

The thing is, that Robotech apparently changed the Japanese Songs for american pop songs, which is the version Generation Films was talking about. The english Macross Dub( which was made in the mid 00's) kept the japanese songs, especially since they managed to get Mari Ijima to reprise her role as Lynn Minmey. I've never seen the Robotech's Macross Saga, so I don't know those american songs. In fact, the songs with the original Japan duo are at least better than their English duo counterpart. Good effort there guys. But I would like to point out some of the supposedly questionable abilities mentioned in the video about the SDF-1 was quite unfounded. Firstly, the SDF-1 was originally designed to be able to fire the Reflex Canon in Carrier mode. However, the ill-fated inital Spacefold of the SDF-1, which was meant to take them to to the moon but instead sent the SDF-1, the surrounding ships and Macross island to the edge of Pluto instead, caused those spacefold generators to disappear from the ship entirely. Without those generators, there was not enough power to fire the Reflex Cannon. So the ship HAD to make the modular transformation in order to realign the ship power systems to enable it to fire the main gun. It just happens to look like a dorky robot with two lances above its head, because the SDF-1 was modified while in Pluto orbit to use the two aircraft carriers (Daedalus [as mentioned], the other was Prometheus), that got transported along for the spacefold ride, as its arm appendages. This way it solves the problem of living space to house the extra people brought along with them and they wouldn't have to expend too many resources to make seafaring aircraft carriers, outer-space propulsive. So it was not silly, it was necessary. The SDF-1 had to constantly switch between its ship mode and the modular transformed battle mode because, the the SDF-1 had sublight speed capability in ship mode. The battle mode was slow as PH'UC and you can't get back to earth doing 100 mph and not have every one aboard die of old age while you do it. The Pin-point barrier system was also not a stupid design but but like the modular trasnformation was put into place out of necessity because the ship was under powered without those spacefold generators and thus could not activate its full shield barrier and all of its crucial systems at once. So the Pin-point barrier system was put in place to give some kind of protection from enemy fire until the SDF-1 could return to Earth and get those Spacefold generators replaced. Again...Not silly but necessary. The story was written that way to show the danger the people on that ship had face everytime the ship transformed. It was hard living through an earthquake every week. But it allowed the SDF-1 to develop its little mentioned but amazing materials recycling system that made sure every bit of the rubble and damaged part within the ship could be broken down, reprocessed and remade into materials they needed. The SDF-1 is a great and iconic ship in Science Fiction literature and the designers and writers of Macross deserve our respect for giving us this ship to inspire us.

Singing as an art and part of culture has been integral to the Macross lore and theme of culture overcoming barbarism, as it depicted the impact of the former in upholding or developing civilization. Speaking of the songs, the Japanese versions transmit better the theme.

The SDF-1 uses the full ship barrier shield twice. The second time was on episode 27 "Force of Arms" when the SDF-1 crashes into Dolza's mother ship. After it launches all it's reflex rockets, the SDF-1 engages the barrier shield. After you see Dolza's ship explode, you see a second, smaller explosion. That was the barrier shield exploding after the first explosion overloads it.

The ADV dub of Macross was a lot better, since they were able to get the original Japanese voice actress for Minmay to dub here character in English. It is a shame it can be so difficult to find. (Darn you, Harmony Gold USA)

No you don't watch Robotech, you watch Macross. Lynn Minmay is a Japanese singer and the Japanese version has much higher production values with the voice actors, so the songs are much better.

The source material and the derivation were smash hits for the early 1980s. I was reminded of this around 2000 when a Japanese person gave an enthused reaction when I mentioned "Macross". I still remember her "Makurosu! Makurosu!"

Yeah, Harmony Gold really f'ed up SDF Macross. Lyn Minmei's playlist is one of those things cut. Like, all of it. One of the things that really makes SDF Macross, and for that matter all of Macross (even Delta), something special. Might I suggest following this up with Macross Plus. Bryon Cranston plays the protagonist Isamu Dyson, and the story mirrored the real life competition for the Advanced Tactical Fighter in the late 80s and early 90's that led to the deployment of the F-22. I'm pretty sure Lyn Minmei's one and only song in Robotech was written by whatever low level real estate broker walked in late that day at Harmony Gold. It doesn't resemble any of the songs from Super Dimension Fortress Macross, such as "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" or the title song of the Macross movie "Do you Remember Love."

I really appreciate the effort you put into this video. I could never get into the stories but I was fascinated with the ship. Something new every day. Captain Gloval was a legitimate hoot.

If you read the books they go into the dimensional part of the SDF. The inside of the ship is filled with rooms that are there own pocket dimensions. Roy Focker was in the first expedition inside and finds a huge door that leads into a room that can not fit inside. Its a aspect of the ship that was lost in the Robotech series, and i do now if they go into it on the original unedited showings. it helps explain how they could rebuild the city inside the ship and why Rick and Minimay stayed lost as long as they did.
