Sculpfun S30 Review - A Great Laser for the First-Time Buyer

If you are a first-time laser buyer then check out this review of the Sculpfun S30. It might be a 5W laser, but it has excellent engraving capabilities and is a solid cutting laser too.
In this video, I put the Sculpfun S30 through its paces and rate its power and feature from the perspective of a first-time buyer. At $330, this laser might just offer all of the features you will need as you are starting out.

    Great video, you seem like an expert. I bought that exact machine but, honestly, I don't know how to use it. Would you mind to tell share with me the settings to engrave a tumbler. I found out how to do framing but my RA isn't rotating properly. I'd appreciate your advice.

    If it isn’t rotating properly then maybe you didn’t enter the proper values into the rotary setup screen. I can’t remember the value for the RA2 but you should find it on xTools site or possibly in my own RA2 video from about a year ago. I’m assuming it is rotating smoothly just not the right amount. Settings will be a challenge because every type of cup is a bit different. You’ll want to go reasonably slow and with a 5W laser I would guess you’ll be at 100% power. Get a regular flat piece of stainless steel to play with. A cheap dollar store stainless steel knife blade will work. This will give you a reasonable idea on bare stainless, but many cups have paint or powder coat so they may take more or less power.

    Well first make sure you are using stainless steel. After that set your power to 100% and go slow on the speed. For a 20w laser set the speed to 10mm/S and give it a try

    Hello Steve, this is a really interesting video which i stumbled upon after a recommendation that this machine could be used to cut custom stencils for artwork projects. Im still unsure whether this would be possible and would appreciate your thoughts. Many art stencils are available and whilst I can hand cut custom stencils, they take a long time unless I use card and then they have a limited number of uses. Id prefer to use some form of plastic along the lines of overhead projectors sheets, but larger. If this machine isn't suitable, would you know of something that might be? Any guidance at this stage would be a great help to me. Many thanks in advance, Loz

    Any diode laser can make stencils. I did a video on this about a year ago so check my videos. You need to be sure that your stencil material isn’t made from PVC plastic but otherwise it’s pretty straightforward

Look here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKmM0s2MqMrKpcY.html I've also done a couple of other sign videos (one that immediately precedes this video) showing you how to create your own base that's better than those cheap ones and you can probably still make them for about the same price. Keep in mind that if you have a diode laser, you might be out of luck for creating these since diode lasers can't cut or engrave clear acrylic - at least not easily.

    Good afternoon. I'm looking for something to etch on curved pistol grips. Would this be an appropriate unit?

  • @SteveMakesEverything

    @SteveMakesEverything

    Жыл бұрын

    There are two thing to think about. First is the material because diode lasers can’t engrave all materials. Second is the curve on an item that isn’t a cylinder, which can be a challenge for an inherently 2D device. I’d suggest you find someone local who has a diode laser you can try. I assume you will be pulling the grips off and laying them flat on a workspace. If the curve on the grip isn’t significant where you want to engrave you will be fine, but if you want to engrave edge to edge you are going to struggle.

    Steve, do diode lasers mark stainless without cermark type sprays? This is the first diode review I have watched, so am a little surprised at that capability if so! Thanks.

  • @SteveMakesEverything

    @SteveMakesEverything

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, even a 5W laser can mark stainless quite effectively without any surface preparation. As you might know, a CO2 requires Cermark or similar to achieve this. However be aware that materials like clear or white acrylic are very difficult for diode laser to work with., so it's a trade-off you have to make.

    @@dian3145 Multiple passes will help, but you can also just set the speed to a lower rate. Also, a higher power diode laser will mark darker more quickly, but of course comes with added cost.

    Sorry for the lots of questions, but its hard to find good info... I've been wanting to do simple quick dog tags for customers on the fly at an indoor flea market. I'm looking for something that can do them fast (ideally 10 minutes or less or fairly close to it) is this a good laser for that job? Also you mentioned in comments about not cutting vinyl what about engraving resin? Any risk in that? Do you think this laser is good for the environment we are at? I'm concerned about engraving stainless steel and fume production. Is that going to be an issue, if so what would you recommend for capturing those fumes for safe disposal? This building is an old furniture warehouse so its very open but other vendors are nearby and some are food products. We're in the middle row so we cannot run a pipe or anything outside. Please excuse my ignorance on this, I've not done laser engraving. The most we've done is 3D printing, and this seems to be a similar machine and operation, except not done in the vertical axis. Thanks for the help.

  • @SteveMakesEverything

    @SteveMakesEverything

    You would be fine to use a diode laser with light burn to engrave dog tags on the fly and it should take less than 10 minute. Since you are only engraving off a thin layer of finish it would pose not real thread to anyone from a fume perspective. For engraving resin the answer is harder. Most resins are formed from naturally occurring organic chemicals (especially the low VOC variants) and they should pose no hazard. However some might have a Chlorine atom hanging off the molecule so you might have to ask the manufacturer, though in general this would be a very low content of any resin. The big question of course is if you can even engrave resin without it turning back into goo and I suspect that is the much more difficult challenge.

  • @GokouZWAR

    @GokouZWAR

    @@SteveMakesEverything thanks for the info! I’ve seen your videos on acrylic etching, is acrylic different from resin? We were thinking of making some clear resin squares to make something similar to what you did with your LED acrylic signs. Any idea what we should look for to be sure we don’t have one of those chlorine molecules hanging on? As far as making it go back to goop, only way to know that is to try it I suppose if you’ve never done it before yourself. We got a simple enclosure for the laser we bought (which happened to be the Sculpfun S30 - 5W diode laser version in this video since it clearly does the dog tag etching we need for it and the price was reasonable) is there any good DIY fume disposal systems you can recommend we build? The enclosure we got has a tube and fan on the enclosure to blow the fumes out a tube, but obviously we don’t really have anywhere we can dispose of it without simply blowing it into the air just perhaps in a different place. We had thought of maybe a simple air filter on the end of the tube, blowing into a trash bag, or blowing it into a home depot paint bucket… something so it’s sort of dissipating and diluting for any fumes it may create. So far all I’ve seen are systems to blow them outdoors, or expensive fume collection air purifiers, but we’re not really ready to invest the price of the one used with for example the xtool fully enclosed machine since it costs almost 3x the cost of this machine itself at this point. The enclosure was more for eye protection since we plan to run it in a place where people won’t exactly have access to any kind of eye protection but we do want them to be able to watch the laser work on their product but the secondary purpose was to help dispose of fumes in a more controlled manner.

  • @SteveMakesEverything

    @SteveMakesEverything

    Жыл бұрын

    @@GokouZWAR So there are standalone air filters which would help but I honestly haven't found one that really works and they are quite expensive to buy and operate. (I might build one to see if I can do a better job) If you are planning to engrave acrylic then you will definitely need some sort of air filtering. Nothing hazardous about cutting acrylic but it does have an odor. Regarding engraving resin, I was having a conversation with someone in my shop just yesterday about doing this. It's on my list of many things to do because I haven't tried it before. With very light power it might work and maybe I'll post a YT short of the test and results.
