Scuba Diving Most Dangerous Island in Caribbean in 4K - Desecheo Island Off Rincón, Puerto Rico

After Old San Juan, we went scuba diving with Taino Divers at Desecheo Island - an old military island and nature preserve near Rincon, Puerto Rico. We dove the Candy Land and Aquarium reefs/dive sites and met up with Lola - the Tax Collector. There was mounds of coral and lots of fish. Even better than the diving in Culebra. We also give a little Lionfish education and why those fish will deplete a reef of all the fish in just days.

I went diving with Taino divers in 2004 and they brought me to see the two Pt boats and an underwater cave. I was living in SW Florida at the time and I kept my boat on Key Largo. The Florida Keys has a lot more fish but the coral reefs are in bad shape. This reef is still beautiful. Thanks for the video.

Oh that's cool. I wanted to see the caves, but we didn't do that part. I'll just have to go back I guess :) I was just glad the weather cooperated so we could make it to island. Shannon and I did a wreck dive in the Florida Keys about 25 years ago. It was very interesting. I agree Florida has a lot of fish. It's getting harder to find nice reefs. We just got back from doing a safari in Kenya (lots of videos to come) and we dove at Diani Beach there. Amazing! Can't wait to show that.

I agree! It's like a whole other world down there. We just got back from diving at Diani Island in Mombasa, Kenya. I should have some videos of that and our safari in the next few weeks/months. Been traveling more and haven't had as much time to make videos. Thanks for your great comments!

Anybody can dive Desecheo - you don't need a special permit, we do it all the time. Did Taino Divers tell you that lie? Also, the nurse shark is named Tony.

I believe Taino Divers said they are the only commercial dive shop to get a permit? Maybe that is not the case now or they were just wrong :) They also said the nurse shark was named Lola lol. I was just going off the information I was given. But, that's why comments are good on KZread videos for any corrections. I appreciate your input. It was still some incredible diving and I hope you still enjoyed the video. I do try to be correct and give good advice on these. Take care fellow diver!

@@ChrisChrisman Lots of commercial shops host boat dives at Desecheo. Permits were required years ago, but that ended, and, anybody could get the permit. Seems somebody over in Rincon has a small problem with the truth.

Ah that's good to know! Wish I knew that earlier. Hopefully anyone that watches this video also reads the comments so people know they have choices.

Oh, sorry I didn't see this comment until just now. Greetings! For this video and most of my videos I used a combination of a GoPro 9 and a GoPro 11. I shoot at 60 fps and then color grade it in my editing software. I recommend any of the newer GoPro's. I haven't tried some of the other brands of action cameras, but I'm sure they are good as well. Hope that helps!

What a beautiful reef! Y’all are so brave to be diving where the sharks live though! Lol! Those spikes look like they would hurt if you got stung by the lion fish! I’ve heard that they’re very poisonous! Great video y’all!!

It really was beautiful! The water was so clear. They were just nurse sharks, but after watching Lola tear apart that lionfish I got a little more worried :) Those lionfish spikes look dangerous. We have swam around many over the years. Scuba divers are keeping their numbers down so that is good. Thanks for watching!

Looks like a great spot! Much appreciated. The weather kept us away when we were last in Rincón, but even the shore snorkeling was pretty good. Those lionfish are such a terribly invasive species. For the sake of all the other fish, they really need to be speared whenever possible. But I hear they're tasty!

Yeah, apparently it's a hard island to get to since the weather rarely cooperates. The first dive in the video was good, but the second dive was pretty incredible. Would like to try some other spots around there as well. I agree on the lionfish completely. I hear they taste great as well, but restaurants seem to be out of them every time we go looking for it. Thanks for the comment!

I will say the sharks definitely made it more interesting haha. Feeding them was a good way to reduce some of the lion fish numbers. The lion fish are so destructive!
