SCSA "Taipan X" .223 Wylde Rifle (everything you need to know)
Спорт
After seeing numerous complaints online from people having issues with their Taipan Light rifle and after my previous review having personally experienced some of this same issues, I was keen to look at the new design of the Southern Cross Small Arms Taipan X rifle.
This rifle has had some redesigns being a brass deflector, a hybrid spring assisted pump and straight pull bolt action, removal of the original bolt catch and a new hammer promising faster lockup times.
I put the rifle through it's paces and thankfully had no sticking issues or malfunctions with this new Taipan X. I don't like the lack of a lock forward on the pump action like you'd see on the Remington 7615 and I wasn't a fan of the bolt lock of the Taipan X, however it shot Federal Premium 62gr Trophy Bonded Tip ammo into 0.8" @ 100 yards just like I achieved with it's predecessor The Taipan Light.

This is absolutely what the rifle should have been in the first place. Good review and good on SCSA for fixing the rifle.

I agree, if it was myself, you and others making up the same and similar issues we experienced with the Taipan Light, why discontinue it and make an improved version? Just take it on the chin, work to rectify the issues and people will buy it. I’m glad that I didn’t have any issues with this new model 👍

@@ozziereviews I agree, we can't have all had the same issues if it was "only the first few rifles". What are the odds of that? I am glad they fixed the issues, and wish them all the best for the future.
If the price is right this is a fantastic gun. Making things in Australia is an extremely difficult thing to do because of all the government red tape, including from local councils. The fact that SCSA and others can even bring an Australian made gun to market is amazing. It is a shame that there has been some issues but I am keen as to one day support Aussie manufacturing. Cheers Ozzie.

As soon as they include a better trigger and pump locking mechanism they should consider export to the US and EU. Ban states, hunting restrictions and manual rifle competitions exist on the other side of the pond too.

Great review Ozzie, good to see us Aussies after 200 or so years have actually succeeded in building a rifle that will fire when it gets hot. The Taipan X looks good, however I feel SCSA need to have another go at designing the rifle, as you said the bolt release position is daft, but also for me the straight pull movement should not move the fore-end. The system needs a redesign, either only have straight pull or be able to change the linkage system so when the straight pull is used the fore end remains locked. Finally, I've owned some 223's and that accuracy is very average.

Mag capacity and reloading is the issue with a lever gun.
I got my X in November and I’m happy with it the only issue I had was an operator error in not letting the Spring do its job in chambering the round once I learned to not ride the return of cocking grip no dramas at all. I found the Winchester silvertip 64 grain was good and it’s a good pig round for this calibre but I will head out later to get Federal Premium 62 grain and see how’s it goes. Glad it worked well but the straight pull knob needs to fold out of the way when used as a pump imo. Why Wylde you can't really buy 5.56 ammo here. In this configuration it should have been a 308 maybe that could be next. . Accuracy was fair, i think it would be good for cleaning up mobs of small to medium size pigs. Down the track i could see myself owning one. However chambered in 223 R, I'm more interested in the new Australian Eureka Stockade. Adjustable Gas lever release, several 20" Aussie made barrels, 4 lb trigger & stock options as well as 2 twist rate options. Its just so good to see Aussie companies stepping up & making a diverse range of guns.

Hey Ozzie, wondering if you could chip in on an issue I've been having with my Taipan X. Noticed that once the rifle is hot after 100 or so rounds, the magazines will stop falling free from the magwell and you have to manually pull them out. My current theory is that once hot, the bolt group is spreading the polymer feed lips when cycling, and on a closed bolt - the heat from the bolt is setting the feed lips in a spread position. I've got in touch with SCSA and they've been very responsive and happy to help with the issue.
