I had no idea that there are differences between Italian and German and other countries makers scrolls. I have two violins from different countries so I will take a look. Many thanks for an informative video.

Actually the aesthetics doesn't influence the sound but the quantity of material (big and heavy or skinny and light) influences the sound. In case to is too light it often turns out that the violin has a wolf tone which is rather difficult to eliminate. a medium scroll size is actually always great. And without scroll it looses its substance and projection. That's what I have experienced. But I have to admit that I never wanted to eliminate the scroll as some makers desire. I think a violin without scroll is like a human without head. all the best from Cremona. Perhaps this is too sensitive a question but if you (Edgar) could tell me why you or any other luthier...doesn't have access to the Stradivari tree/wood supply for YOUR Stradivari "copy"...?? At least I'm not aware of any luthier that DOES. How come? I know of 2 big grand piano makers who DO and have Strad wood in their grand piano's. Fazioli and C. Bechstein. If you don't feel comfortable answering this question for whatever the reason it's okay. Just hoping to find out why this is..

Dear Anderson C, we do have access and we actually get out tone wood exactly from the same area where Stradivari and all the other Great Makers from Italy got their wood from. Since it is so normal for us we didn't even thin k of pointing out this matter. The great wood is the basic but the greta craftsmanship is the main key to superb instruments. thank you for your interest Edgar from Cremona, Italy

Hello hello hello my friend Mister Edgar Russ. I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to, and it seems no one touches on this topic. In relation to the violin scroll so, why is the base side of the scroll and the treble side of the scroll why are they carved two different dimensions? And what is its effect and insignificance the violin sound and tone.? The only thing that I can find is that it seems that no one can seem to agree on how much it affects the sound and tone of the violin, and some people that there's no significance to the sound of the instrument and the scroll is nothing more than an aesthetic two. The instrument? What is your thoughts intake on this

Hi Jim, I guess the main problem on this topic is that no one is able to eliminate or exchange the scroll of a great sounding violin. Therefore it is hard to demonstrate how the impact of the scroll (or more precisely: how the impact of a certain quantity of material in that spot of the violin) is. A too light scroll or even without scroll results to a thin sound without body. A too heavy scroll makes it harder in playability That’s my experience. Hope you don’t decapitate now all violins! There are people who defend the "aerodynamic"shape of the scroll. That it helps with the sound projection. Personally don't believe that. Thank you for the wonderful videos-always interesting!

Well the the expense of instruments I guess it does not matter that that most good instruments are handmade. The problem is trying to get a decent instrument is nearly impossible for affordable cost. I can buy a professional bass guitar starting at $700 - 1000 ( functional not fancy) which wouldn't buy you a decent student Viola. Here in the US viols are already only for the upper middle class and higher ( due to cost / education availability). In my opinion I would welcome a partial CNC made instrument if it was well made , sounds good and affordable.

speaking of acoustics. I had to leave this video because the audio was just to harsh and echo'y to listen to. sorry. but "stuff" happens! ECF

Please pardon my ignorance. Why waste time on things which have no bearing on sound? Vanity in itself is borderline insanity? Look at SRV #1, the magic, the art, the spirit of sound can be humble yet complete.

A classically trained musician makes unbelievable sacrifices of time and money to get to the professional level. If they are going to spend thousands of hours with an instrument, why not to look at a scroll that inspires them?
