All my life, my favorite writing software was the pen and the paper. 😃 Now, I'm using Word. And, in the future, I may be using Scrivener. 😃 Indeed, Scrivener has more features than Word. Terrific features! Thank you very much for this video! Putting Word and Scrivener in a kind of a mirror helps visualize better the differences.

I write fiction and I've used both word and scrivener. My take on the two is that Scrivener is best for creating a nearly finished draft due to its intuitive layout and the ability to look at notes and character outlines, etc. But for me (maybe I'm just not smart enough to use the available tools) final formatting has to be done in word. I've never gotten an exported document that was formatted the way I liked. lol. I love Scrivener--to a point.

Most authors don't choose Scrivener, and those who have it only use it for part of their book. And there are more word processors than Word! There are plenty of templates for Word, but since the basic one is fine for writing a novel, most people just use that and alter it to their liking.

I know many full time authors and not one of them uses Scrivner. The problem with Word is most (yes, most) do not understand the program and fail to get that Word does exactly what you ask it to do. They fail to understand that there are many settings one can change to tame Word. I have been with Word since the DOS days and have never looked back because Word will do almost anything you ask of it. Many new writers think the tool matters more than the content and to be truly happy and productive with the tools they have means understanding the tools they have. Scrivner is OK for many, but comparing it to Word is silly. Word is far more capable than most Scrivner videos would have you believe.

I used Word for years, but now I'm a BIG Scrivener fan. When you have lots of books, ideas, research, characters, etc. It builds a writing world for you. Love it. Every writer I know uses it.

I still see no need for Scrivener. All an author needs is a good word processor and a printer.

So far (for me) scrivener seems to have a great deal of pointless stuff. And I find the stuff there is a point to hard to figure. I expected to get something that you could write in, as you might on a typewriter, with numbered pages, only obviously easier to change things about. A thesaurus and dictionary would be handy. What could be simpler and more useful? Ive written emails to the customer service team because my version of scrivener seems completely different to the ones on KZread. But they must have gone fishing 🤔

@@NipoteZia its better to try different things. words writing format is purely for writing but if you aim to create something that requires you to keep annoying dabs on timelines, events, names and places, the notepaper type of thing these modern softwares have does help a huge deal.

Difficulty exporting Word documents in compatible form for services like Smashwords? I've done three books without any problem whatsoever just by following the instructions in the free (How-To) book on Smashwords on how to configure Word, which is really just a group of simple settings. Once I set up Word, I created a Smashwords compatible document that was just one paragraph long, then copy and pasted in an entire new book I wrote over the top, Word makes it compatible in a few seconds, and I send it to Smashwords, they create an epub doc from a Word doc for free. I've never had a book rejected due to format errors once you follow the simple formatting books/videos. Configure Word once and it's always ready to create documents compatible with most publishers. I never had to send my document to another piece of software or any service. I am not a huge fan of Microsoft, but I never experienced any of the problems you mentioned sending files to a publisher, and most, if not all of them reference Word as their standard file type. Many even specify using Word 2007, never once had one of them recommend Scrivener. I've never seen Scrivener except this video. Regardless, your video was well made but I question the accuracy of some of your statements about publishing with Word. Nice video but I think I'll stick with Word since it is the industry standard and has been for a looooong time. I have never seen Scrivener recommended by any of the publishers I know.

one of the best tool with Scrivener is Dialogue Focus... yet you can't use it with windows with "em dashed" dialogue.... and this has been asked and been waited for more than 4 years from the windows developer... it's "planned" but not a priority and it's convenient since they don't comment on future plans... if you have macOS go for it ! Scrivener is a wonderful software !! (truly) but if you have Windows.... you can wait a long long time before having a Scrivener software half efficient as the MacOS one !

SCRIVENER is a writing tool, Word is a writing and formatting tool. In fact, they're complementary. scrivener needs the formatting and printing capacity of Word. But in writing, Scrivener is the best considering its many capabilities which Word lacks.

It's a really, really steep learning curve. Just when you think you've got it, something else pops up and you're stuck in the mire again.

I have the trial version and completed the entire tutorial but still can't figure it out. I tried to make an outline but nothing works on the cork board.

I can see that Scrivener has lots of useful features. I bought a copy ages ago and I've dabbled in it for a while. Now I have a proper book project. However, I am using the Outline view in Word and it is so easy to add headings and sub-headings with this - I'm writing a technical book where I need three levels of headings and two levels of bullets below body text and I simply need to click tab to go down a level or shift-tab to come up a level. I can't see how I'd be able to do this as easily in Scrivener nor can I see how I could export from Scrivener back to Word and retain the heading tags. I'm still figuring out how to make the most of Scrivener in a way that works for me.

Formatting any document in Word is easy as pie once you set things up. Once upon a time ago, I wrote production/training guides. I threw many a complex formatting problem at Word and it never let me down. It is all about understanding how and why Microsoft Word does what it does and in some cases, the problems one encounters with Word are not really problems; it is simply that Word is doing what you asked it do. Some people love Scrivener and that is fine. Use what works.

Sure sure. Getting the book going, doing the chapters and so on is fine. The problem arises when you try to make your book look decent. And then comes that dreadful process of compilation, which is so unintuitive and so prone to your making all sorts of oversights that it's a hell of a lot easier just completing your book in Word. Same goes for the spellcheck. And the good news is that now, with Scrivener 3, you get to try and learn the compiling interface all over again. I'm definitely not going to "upgrade".

I found this software too confusing, also. I started in Scrivener and switched to Word. The Scrivener tutorials even say you'll have to use a word processing program at some point. However, now that I've written one book, I'm feeling like I will try Scrivener again. Part of the problem, i think was, that I didnt use it in the planning stage. I think it might be easier now that I have a better idea of the planning and formatting process.

I'm not talking about the cover design. I'm talking about getting the text so that there are decent fonts, that the spelling is correct, the pictures are in the right place with corresponding captions and so on. Everything you have to use Microsoft Word for in order to refine the way it looks.

I do not have the poetry option and that is what I need to write my poetry book.

I purchased and was so excited to use Scrivener until I found out that it DOESN'T DO IMAGES! That was a major deal breaker, since my books are non-fiction and image formatting is a big part of that. I should say, it does insert an image between paragraphs, but can't even right or left align it and can't have text flow around an image. (Personally, I feel that should have been mentioned in the review.) So so disappointing.

Looks useful but i think the value of specialized software is underrated. One giant software to solve everything isn't always the best solution.

True...but I like to choose which features I want to use, instead of being limited in what I can do.

I cannot find a way to make my writing space (scrivener for windows) look like book page. At present its just a big white page. I am finding scriv to be very frustrating to use!!

I agree with all the fellow commenters, word is NECESSARY to edit a document. Personally for writing I like to use pages because it less distracting.

I'm bummed to read all these negative reviews about Scrivener. I've heard from a lot of writers who like it. I just downloaded it, so will test it out. One thing that's for sure is KDP prefers Word for Kindle books. I've used Word for years (I own a publishing company) and have had great success with formatting. Hoping Scrivener doesn't disappoint as it seems to have for many.

Using Scrivener is fine if you're into that sort of thing, but when I want to write, that's what I want to do. I don't want to feel like I need to pull out the manual every time I want to do something. Scrivener is way too complicated. It looks to me like it wants to be everything for everybody. I liken it to taking the dashboard out of a 747 and sticking it in a Cessna. Way too complicated when all you want to do is fly one hundred miles to the next town over. I use LibreOffice and a program called Timeline to do my initial outline. That's it. Keep it simple and write the story. Forget all the dross that clutters up programs likes this.

Indeed! I actually try to keep my relationship with the word processor as close as possible to using a typewriter.

It's a little bit disingenuous to say that all authors use scrivener to write their novels. Actually, I prefer to do all my creative writing in LibreOffice Writer, with only the bare essentials, and to keep all my notes in Zim (which a lot of authors use due to it's minimalist but powerful design + it's free) All my editing is done through ProWritingAid as well.

Haven’t tried Campfire so I can’t say.

I bought Scrivener, but I don't use it because of two issues. First, it's so hard to use!!! I have spent hours trying to figure it out, and I just feel more and more stupid. I paid a few hundred dollars for a course to learn how to use it, and I STILL can't figure it out. Second, it's fuzzy on my screen. The text is blurry. Apparently this is a known issue, but I've not found a solution. I wish I could because the features are great, but it just sits there.

Oh man, that's a bummer. Im actually working to create a free course on Scrivener since I've used it since 2007. I've used it for books, thesis, research papers, and even preparing courses. But I totally understand where you're coming from on the complexity. There are a LOT of features that I get are useful, but I don't use and so it makes me feel overwhelmed. I think I am going to mark this down and perhaps make a nuts to bolts KZread video on the key things authors need to know to use Scrivener well enough to make it worth the money.

Yes, I love Vellum but currently it only works for Mac (luckily I'm a mac user). I'm currently writing an article about Vellum - but I've also asked the creators to add one special feature. THis one thing is why I'm still using Jutoh for formatting...but once they add this one thing, I'm going to be the biggest fan....that and they need to make it useable for PC'ers.

Herb, Scrivener can be used on only 2 devices.I use one license on my desktop and laptop, Windows version. I share my project files between the two devices via Dropbox.

Question- If book was written in Word can we upload to Scrivener? I do not have my ebook formatted in Word yet or other books I want to turn into ebooks. Just typed in word

Scrivener is periodically giving me issues with pasting things that come from elsewhere. I can't copy/paste a hyperlink, any text from other programs or online. Example - for research, I sometimes want just a list of hyperlinks to information sites. I could do it, now the program won't. I fixed the problem in the past but can't find info online again to fix it again. The fix was finding and deleting a file on my computer. Help?

While Grammarly doesn't work with Scrivener, ProWritingAid does, and to me at least, has a lot more functionality. The only downside to ProWritingAid is that it's not a plugin to Scrivener. It actually opens/accesses the actual Scrivener project file directly.

Great content. What software is best suited for books that have illustrations? In writing technical books I will have multiple image files for reference on components, etc. I need a method like Affinity Publisher that allows for the typesetting around images and overlapping text in some cases. For kindle I can't find anything that will do this well. Converting to PDF seems laughable from what I have read. Thanks for the content here, and any information you can suggest.

Have you tried Vellum (only works for Mac)?

What is your recommendation for someone like me who's been using Open Office for several years and have a rough draft already about 85-90% of the way through? I'm trying out the free trial and I like the features. But I'm not sure how to quickly go about this with a 50,000 word document and all the character/ setting stuff saved as separate files. To complicate this I'm switching over from an imac (OS Snow Leopard) to a windows 10 laptop, thus running into file format incompatibilities that's slowing me down more than keeping the momentum running. I wonder if it is worth the time to do lots of cut and paste or if I better focus my energy on writing out the last few scenes of the rough draft and then figure out what to do next?

Hi, I used OO (and LibreOffice) for years and I still *have* to use Word at work. Basically: there is a learning curve for Scrivener, it's not massive (say a week or so), there's no getting around it. However, it is by far the best program to actually do the writing in. I write in Scrivener; the very final version -- literally the finished version -- goes into Word format.

how would this software do for kids picture books? Left side picture, right side text. With the text page in a nice color. Can this software do that? Then output it, in epub, mobi, pdf

Terrible. It can format a book for sure, but when it comes to picture books - that's a whole different story. When I go to format a picture intensive book, I actually just hire someone to do it for me.

Light travels at 300,000 km per second and takes 100,000 years to cross the galaxy. Yet this video took 5 years to travel from the other side of the earth to where I live. Sad, but the speed of light has slowed to 1km per day now. Wish I had seen this 5 years ago.

Yes, it would likely end up being exported to Word so the editor can use track changes. But this is after the draft is written, so Scrivener could still be of use.

Sounds great, but you make the claim that you can do everything with Scrivener without needing to use other software. How do you track changes between you and your editor with Scrivener?

You can use inline annotations, or you can use snap shots, or you can just compile the file and send that to editor in the format they prefer. There are options.

You must have a big computer. That would look so squished on my 13" Pro

After using Scrivener to complete two books, I've found it's a badly designed waste of time. Everything, including getting started on a new chapter, requires more work (at least one click, usually more), and more thought than in Open Office or Word. The Spell Check will actually miss entire chapters, I've seen it multiple times. Compiling in Scrivener 3 is no improvement, and often fails to print even when you've done everything correctly. The writers I mentor rave about the ability to create detailed character backgrounds but waste hours doing it when it doesn't help them move forward with their work, and copy / pasting is 50/50. Sometimes it works fine, other times you have to scrub your clipboard data of formatting and code using another program like notepad before you paste. Formatting is garbage, offering tools that seem nice at first, but provide results that are never up to my standards. I also question the portability of project files, which I've seen leave content out when they get moved complete with any and all original files. There are other major problems with Scrivener, and Microsoft Word isn't perfect either, but I find Scrivener is one of the poorest attempts at word processing and book building that I've ever seen. Up front the features look impressive, but once it is put to heavy, serious use you start seeing problems that will cost you time and money to correct in the long run. It is convoluted garbage and I truly wish Apple would ban it from their store.

Can you be more helpful as to why you used it for two books when your words say it is a waste of time? I have 2 series of books (3 books per series) and a continous production of 12 (monthly) book schedule that I have to get out to both print and ebook distributation. Going from mindmap to published is what is needed to save my team time. The audio to transcription into msword-schrivner to posting and making updates in amazon and other online distribution is, I fear without experience, a time consuming task that I was hoping schrivner would help. Does it make a difference, in your experience if you are authoring to write a novel, or howto/research/consulting books? Would you still say msword is better than schrivner?

I've toyed with Scrivener off an on for the last few years. This analysis is spot-on. It seems to be a great organizer and allows you to actually "see" your project, but it gets so many small things wrong. Currently, I'm struggling with something simple: not indenting the first paragraph of the beginning of a chapter. And there's this long-winded and cumbersome hack that needs to be used? It's a program for novels, right? And there's no option for this? It seems to be a complete waste of time and energy because I spend all of my time researching things and watching KZread videos instead of writing.

Well, it would be easy to say that Scrivener has a lot more you can do on it, and I'm pretty sure Reedsy is a service for finding book cover designers and editors, etc. They do have a formatting tool, but comparing Scrivener to Reedsy's formatting tool would be a hard comparison. As for Google Docs vs Word, that would be a good one. I can quickly say that I LOVE Docs over Word specifically for the collaboration capability and real time interaction you can have with your editor and co-writer (if you have one).

You can upload a word doc to amazon Kindle and don't need any other program.

True statement, but wasn't always true. But Word doesn't let the writer have everything he/she needs in one place, but when using Scrivener the author can include all notes, all chapters, all revisions, all plans and outlines - all of it - in one easily accessible place without jumping between programs/apps. But, if all one wants to do is upload a file to the Amazon platforms (CreateSpace and KDP) with fewer conversion errors the better choice would be .PDF.

Word looks different a LOT. Mac versions are different than PC, as well as all the different versions.

Honestly I wouldn't use any of this. So Word wins for me

Scrivener still not suport Polish language... This is shame :) Program for writers without dictionary and language pack is useless. Still google docs have voice writing options and cool cloud. For me notepad ++ looks better then this. Interface can be more simple. Meny options need fiew steps for work. Waste of time. Its good program but still not perfect.
