That's what I love about this show: It's wasn't afraid to show off the dramatically different paradigms of the two worlds - the poor, black neighborhoods were power is concentrated in the hands of people who are the most violent (and thus, don't last very long in the position as 'king'), and the white, marbled hallways of the government were power is concentrated in the hands of the rich and incredibly crafty. Stringer Bell brings a game that's not *quite* good enough to be successful in the latter, and not quite violent enough in the former. Given time, he would've probably learned to play in the latter world and let go of his roots, but Omar and Avon saw that he never had that chance.

The thing is, a lot of people are putting down Stringer Bell here, but it wasn't that he wasn't smart enough. He just wasn't schooled in this particular game yet. The man had to start from square one. The entire power paradigm is different in the business world. He would have gotten it eventually, I think, if his past hadn't caught up to him. Still, this kind of thing DOES happen, again, in the street-level dealing world. Prop Joe does something similar. He pretends to Marlo that he is some all-seeing, all-knowing, ear-in-the-government dealer, then uses public information and a little clever personal phone work to carry it off. Selling people "insurance."

It's fair enough that he didn't understand how that world worked. Unfortunately he wasn't "smart enough" to recognise his limitations in this regard, and decided to go around Levy to deal with Clay Davis. Stringer wasn't stupid by any means, he just lacked self-awareness and had too high an opinion of his intelligence.

This scene shot has so much symbolism in it in a myriad of ways. Notice the big white building that’s illuminating with light that has the illusion of levitation in the background (or forefront depending on your perception); whereas the structure Stringer is standing in is dark and sullen and has the appearance of a hole in which the white structure is hovering and glaring over. Also notice how his lawyer starts off seated to the LEFT then packs his briefcase and hastily exits the dark structure to the RIGHT (which IMO symbolizes the lawyers successful transition at legitimatizing himself from a shady past ; whereas Stringer (standing up) moves from the RIGHT to take a seat to the LEFT of the dark structure as if the weight of it all has him STUCK! (which IMO symbolizes his inability to shake off his shady past and inevitably legitimize himself). Also notice the overall mocking tone Levy uses with Stringer which at face value appears to stem from Clay Davis scamming him; but I think the prolific writers that worked on The Wire used his tone as a double entendre as a way to use Levy as a mocking device towards Stringer Bell and his futile pursuit at legitimacy. This meeting could’ve took place at his office, but the brilliant writers at The Wire choose this landscape for a reason, which I feel was to highlight Stringer Bells futile pursuit for legitimacy and to display parallels and differences amongst these two characters. Let me know what you guys think of my OPINION on the latency of this scene.

String just wanted too much, too fast. Wanted to skip ahead of the line, when all he had to do was wait his turn just like Clay told him to do from the beginning or find another legitimate ladder to climb. He had so many outlets available to him that he could have explored as he allowed the education he was getting to catch up to the scope of his endeavors. Greed is what got him where he was and ultimately was his undoing in this particular pursuit. Didn't matter either way, because he was up the creek without a paddle at that point anyways. He just didn't know it yet. Avon was right, String was playing too many away games.

Another reason why Stringer wasn't cut out for the business world: he didn't change up anything from his street mentality. The dude actually believed he could just walk in and straight up bribe a public official like he was handing out cash in the projects. No subtly, no deniability, nothing. AND he thought the threat of violence was an insurance policy! That works in the hood, but not downtown with people who actually matter.

Even if i was Stringer i would've went to Levy about this from the jump. The only guy they can really trust who isn't in the game.

Not in the game? Just like Omar told him at Bird's trial, Levy was in the game just like all the dealers and hit men. His weapon was a briefcase instead of a shotgun. He was a dirty lawyer, as evidenced by Pearlman's recording of him bribing a court official for grand jury testimony, working on helping dirty people beat the law.

That shot in the end, with city hall in the back and Stringer in the shadow like that. Really has meaning.
