Screen Times: "Crazy Rich Asians"

Ойын-сауық

Logan Hill, veteran New York Times contributor, hosts an advance screening of the eagerly awaited contemporary romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians,” based on the best-selling novel by Kevin Kwan. Constance Wu stars as a Chinese-American economics professor who accompanies her boyfriend (Henry Golding) to his native Singapore, where she learns that his family is not just rich, they’re crazy rich, and his mother (Michelle Yeoh) isn’t quite welcoming her with open arms. Following the screening, Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh and author Kevin Kwan join Hill for an entertaining conversation about this Hollywood movie that puts an Asian storyline front and center, and about how audiences around the world can relate.
Filmed live at TheTimesCenter.

I love how Constance addresses how this doesn’t tell all Asian stories-but it is a platform for telling one and opening the door for even more stories to be told, and Henry’s welcome response for him being half-Asian and the issue of Hollywood constantly white-washing Asian roles. Overall they seem like a really progressive and awesome cast and crew!

When Henry Golding says Singapore is all "pedestrianised". That's the best thing ever coz almost all the sidewalks have shades especially those close to HDB's (housing units). One can literally walk from a bus or MRT/ LRT station to their houses without getting wet. It's very useful when you're caught with no umbrella during a heavy downpour or when it's 35 degrees in a blue cloudless sky.

amy lieu I think you don’t get the point. It is not about Asians being in a movie. It’s about Asians living abroad being in the main roles, it’s about everyday life of asian living abroad. It is so much more relatable and normalizing than asian people being owner of Chinese restaurants, or Kung fu artists as in other movies. That’s just not representative.

  • @12LittleLittleOnes

@@amylieu6084 Your point is an angle. You have talked about other great Asian films. There definitely are a lot from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea, India and other Asian countries. There are still many other angles to explore. A significant point to this film in particular would be the representation of the Asian diaspora who would stand to nurture a stronger voice and greater pride of one's ascendent culture. And beyond that, universally, the film can be said to be one among others that pave tributaries of avenues for diverse cultures to reach heights that they so deserve (but which have been long in coming due to the lack of representation in Hollywood or other such like areas ).

I love the movie. The whole cast is wonderful. There is sort of “arrogance” attitude with Constance Wu but I appreciate her honesty. Like she said, she considers a success when what she does is true to her heart. She does not equate it with money. And she keeps repeating this saying that she is very proud of her show “Fresh of the Boat” which should be considered a trailbrazer for telling a story about Asian community. This movie might be more of a big deal for most people but the success of her show probably opened the door for this movie to be made.

This movie had a lot of western elements. That's why it appealed to the masses. I thought this was a classy movie, some areas were a bit tacky.

Could they have a more lackluster, disappointing description? No mention of who's being interviewed or even what they are going to talk about.

It's hard to hear very successful--and well remunerated--actors play the victim role as ethnic minorities who aren't fairly represented. Constance takes a shot at Brad Pitt for being normalized and thus not having to self-consciously represent a marginalized identity. A couple of generations ago, the country's demographics were so different that the sheer question of representation for certain groups hadn't yet appeared on the horizon. At the same time, the big studios owned the stars just as the major record companies owned musicians. In contrast, Wu can thrive as an actress now, both on TV and in film. She has surely paid her dues and paid back her loans, but she needs a more accurate picture of the profession's history....She also seems torn, as all the panelists do here, between accurate representation and "diversity" or roles. In fact, Asians do tend to fill certain niches and embody certain values; it's not stereotyping to say so. It would be silly to make a movie about an Asian football lineman. But a good story with good writing is going to show that young person who wants her tiger mom to lay off or love her unconditionally in her depth and authenticity. I'd like to see 'that' movie. Let Brad Pitt play the father-husband, and the kids can be mixed race or adopted by him, while the tiger mom is their natural parent. As for open casting, if we're going to have Asians play Othello and Desdemona, then let Pitt play the last emperor?? All that said, "Asian" includes many different countries and cultures, though Singapore may be that rare melting pot.

It is NOT gonna be easy for Asian American actress to get casted for roles in American entertainment.

It's great there's another film with a full Asian (Chinese) cast. All but the male lead who is interracial. They STILL wouldn't bank on an Asian (100%) lead. And how many years has this effort taken to make happen?? Why not Russel Wong? Maybe they thought Russell looks too Chinese (I think he's mixed as well). Jason Scott Lee?
