Drugs. He was strung out for several years straight. From highschool all the way through the Trees existence. His book is dark, but worth reading. Guys like Mark, Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain... I think the creativity, the passion, the intelligence is there in spite of the habits. I know a lot of people tend to credit drugs for a musicians creativity, but that's BS. Mark's book shows that really well. Finally being on the other side, and being able to deal with one's shit has made his recent work amazing. His creative output has increased a lot. He's had like 5 albums in 6 years now, and written the book as well.

You scratch your head every time trying to come up with intelligent questions, you feel dead proud of your questions, then some pretentious arsehole with an overblown ego just grunts some barely intelligible answer. Or like here, where, as nice as he was, he just couldn't muster much of an answer. A lot of people would get very tired, very quickly, and think, 'sod this, I'll just ask the standard bs like everyone else'. It's also possible that record companies had some influence on the questions being asked.

I completely agree with you, he is/was one of the most unique talents around, however, all of the interviews he does in the '90's it seems like he's barely there, but it's also from him being bored out of his mind & he let's you know by his rising level of sarcasm (he was the king of caustic & sarcastic musicians), or "Dark Mark" emerged & he seemed like a cobra, ready to strike. He had a reputation for not being shy about throwing hands if he felt the need arise. I don't believe the Conners brothers was the tide that he was swept up in, more like the H-bomb swept him away for some time. He was one of the ultimate symbols of survival & I know, at least for myself, that when he cleaned up for good, you couldn't help but think that if Mark Lanegan did it, anybody can.

Yup, Mark was already heavy in to heroin at the time of this interview. He said they were heading out on tour with Alice in about a month. According to his book, all him and Layne did on their spare time was score heroin because they had to have it so they wouldn’t go into withdrawal, and also because they wanted to party out of boredom.
