Drew Barrymore said: "In the horror film genre, my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was going to be slugging through at the end, but was going to creak by and make it. What I wanted to do is to take that comfort zone away." I never knew this. Thanks, Chris.

The best thing about Scream is the beginning. You would never think a well known actress like Drew Barrymore would be killed in a film, let alone the opening 5 minutes of it. But the second she's killed, the movie genuinely becomes a free for all because you as an audience member cannot tell who's going to be next.

I'd say today the scene still holds up decently but because Drew Barrymore isn't a household name anymore, the effect is slightly toned down. But it's still a great scene, I remember showing my gf the first film and we were both exposed to Scary Movie first. She looked at me during this scene and was like "Babe...this isn't funny, this is actually kinda scary "

Ghostface popping up in the bushes and other random places makes total sense for it to be a gag from Wes Craven. And it also makes sense that we, the audience, don't know yet that actual humans are the person under the costume. Until the very end we have no idea whether it's an other worldly being or another student underneath it. So him/them popping up in these random places, I feel, is supposed to mock movies like Halloween/Friday the 13th but also keep us guessing whether or not they're human 🤷‍♂️

If anyone remembers the marathon Bravo used to do of the 100 scariest movie moments, Scream was one of the higher placed films. Wes Craven commented that at the time he was stuck in a place where he didn't want to do another regular slasher film and he was at a signing and a kid came up to him and said "You know, I loved Last House on The Left. You should do something that really kicks ass." Wes thought he might have been going soft, and decided to go all in with Scream, even to where he put real money up for known actors and actresses at the time, which really helped the film.

Late with this review by a month ! The movie officially turned 25 December 20th Still amazed I watched it so young but loved it My first introduction to Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette Really happy Wes Craven managed to revitalize the slasher genre in the 90s when it was starting to wane Love all these 90s actors and this soundtrack Kevin Williamson knew how to write dialogue for teenagers Equally scary and equally funny deconstructing the horror movie tropes and cliches with tons of meta references New Nightmare was the precursor but this solidified it Very sad how all these murders stemmed from Sidney Prescott's mother but it all ties back Scream also lead to the creation of caller ID on phones Happy I got to dress up for Halloween as Ghostface Super excited for movie 5

The opening may be the most technically brilliant scene of this movie but I honestly think Scream has been a quietly thematically potent film that has only become more relevant in what it says in its third act regsrding patriarchal violence, and the way it so handily disrupts and dismantles that. Scream 2 is also excellent but its stab (haha) at meta commentary relating to blackness in mainstream horror is undercooked compared to the whole series (esp. The original's) conversations around trauma and gender in the slasher subgenre. I think Scream is on a shortlist of the most sexually astute slashers and part of that is how it interrogates sex and violence in its audience. Brilliant stuff.

This is what happens in the movie! The movie begins with Ghostface attacking Tara (Jenna Ortega) and leaves her for dead, but she actually survives. Tara's sister Sam (Melissa Berrara) returns to Woodsboro with her boyfriend Richie (Jack Quaid) to care for her. Dewey has tired as sheriff and has been replaced by Judy Hicks. He is close to Judy's son Wes who is also friends with Tara. The Ghostface killer shows up and lures Judy into a trap in broad daylight while she's driving and she's dead. Dewey teaches Wes the rules of survival and decides to call up Gale and Sidney to help him deal with the new killer. Sidney is married living in Chicago, while Gale is living in Los Angeles after separating from Dewey. Ghostface targets Tara at the hospital. Dewey goes to her rescue, but ends up killed. YES, ONE OF THE MAIN TRIO FINALLY DIES. SHOCKING. People did say he was the most likely candidate. Anyway, this enrages Sidney and Gale who vow for revenge. The women, along with Sam, investigate Tara's friends which includes Wes, Tara's friend Amber, Randy Meeks' niece, Chad (Omar Gooding), Chad's girlfriend Liv (Sonia Ben Ammar) and Mindy (Jasmine Savoy-Brown). There's also a dude named Vince (Kyle Gallner) who stalks Liv. They learn that the new Ghostface killer is doing a "Requel", following up on the original killings and all have connections to past victims including Sam who is the secret illegitimate daughter of Billy Loomis! OH WOW! We then come to Stu's house where Liv and her family now live. The killers turn out to be Richie and Amber, secretly in love and wanting to bring the killings to a new generation. Amber is the mastermind though. They plan to frame Sam for the killings. Sidney and Gale have suspected Sam for a while, but realized it was Amber and Richie. The duo kills Wes, Chad, Liv, and Vince. Sam kills Richie, and Sidney kills Amber. Sidney, Gale, Sam, Tara, and Mindy survive to see another day. THE END. No Stu returning, no KIRBY. Kirby is dead people so stop craving her to return. She was stabbed in the gut deep and left to bleed out for a while before help arrived. Jill also tells Dewey she's dead while in hospital and he doesn't correct her, only when she stated Sidney was probably dead too. KIRBY IS DEAD.

While Scream was a particularly clever example of characters being aware of the genre they're in, it didn't invent the idea, and it wasn't even the first example in horror. For instance, Fright Night (1985) did it with vampire movies. Also, if you're into REALLY old movies, see Arsenic & Old Lace (1944), which kind of did to thriller plays what Scream did to slasher movies.
