    Great job man! Awesome!! I have a HDD which has precious photos in it, and I am keeping it hoping that someday, somehow, I can find a solution like yours. The problem on mine is that it’s totally scratched! Would love to get your take on whether or not it’s salvageable. Thanks for this video. Great work! Great job! We would need to inspect it. Totally scratched on 1 surface can force other surfaces to scratched. We have a 8TB case in works right now where 2 out of 10 surfaces survived and decent amount of data was pulled because zone stripes were long. A lot depends on the drive setup. Contact us at www.hddrecovery.ca/contact-us and provide all the details on past attempts

  • @hddrecoveryservices

    @hddrecoveryservices

    Hi, welcome to the channel. Scratch in the middle would be a problem. Data from outside towards scratch could still be recovered, but a lot will depend on what type of drive it is, how it parks, how many heads, etc... best solution in this case on multi-platter drive is to cut that head out, and reprogram the drive to disable it.

    I have a drive that has 3 platters and it doesnt appear to read the top platter because its just a circular spinny thing on the header "reader" (forgive my lack of knowledge), all the other sides have no scratches, am I safe to turn this baby on? Is the data only written on the inside platters? The top is scratched badly so I cant make the header miss it.

    Good tecnik, i will try it when i have a case of a headcrash. Usually what i do is if the headcrash is not in the head 0 ou 1 that the drive can read the firmware. For example head 3 had damages. I cut the head 3, and try to make image from the other heads. But now i will try to put glue after imaging the other areas and try to read from surface 3for the remaining good area. Nice work!

    Hi again, mister! Talked to some "experts" in the field today. One of them said it was critical to get a donor that was made like within weeks of the batch the crashed HDD is made. That buying on part number/model number is not enough in itself because of the tolerances. What's your take on that? Also, I have gotten som inspiration from this video. I will do a similar solution for avoiding the parking area near the spindle. But since there is a small notch on the platter surface (rest looks spotless, luckily), I'm thinking to make an additional mechanical stopper so that the heads will be physically restricted to pass over the notched sector. What do you think? ;)

  • @hddrecoveryservices

    @hddrecoveryservices

    tmbryhn parts compatibility criteria is different for different makes of hard drives. Date of manufacturing is a good to match, but even with the same date you can have a mismatch. Preamp type for Seagate nails it, microjogs nail it for WD but you won't find out that information without specialized tools, so label is the best next option. Hard drives that park on platters are hard to work on, add platter damage to it and it just takes everything to a whole new level. My suggestion would be to bring it to DR company if data is important.

    Wonderful idea! Great job. I have a quick question. I had sent my WD hard drive for data recovery but their message was that recovery from this case is not possible due to scratches on the upper side of the 2nd platter. Initially they we were able to get access to the hard drive after head transplantation but later the transplanted head got crashed and lost access. By any chance your services are available for India.?

Or only for the kind you repaired on this video? I would be glad if you could help me out figure it out cause i have too many important files on it and need to be done immediately but i dont have that much budget to send it to you. I'd only suggest that if you're cleaning your room every several hours and never open the windows, e.g. have no air flow going on. Else I doubt it's going to be a good idea, there's a reason why hard drives are closed up and have a filter there around the platter. I guess the better question would be: How much dust can a harddrive withstand?

  • @chrisfoxevententertainment7689

    You never want to do this to a hard drive and even if it is repaired always transfer that data to a new hard drive Asap. A recovered hard drive loses it ability to read and write to the drive after repair and will eventually fail sooner than later.

  • @NoferTrunions

    I'm a structural engineer, machinist, and a car painter. I'm very interested in ways to recover data from scratched platters. Heads getting ruined passing over scratches fall into at least 2 cases: 1) kicked up burr physically contacts head and 2) scratch is as wide as the head so the boundary layer head lift is compromised by a very rough surface and so the head contacts the peaks in that rough area. And perhaps 3) the head scratch is deep enough to cause actual damage to the magnetic material. So how do you get rid of these head contact situations so the head is not damaged trying to read a scratched platter? BURNISHING: This seems to be a "machining" process where a special aerodynamic "head" is used to cut down the burrs. It is not 100% effective but evidently allows a scratched platter to be read in some cases where a head would be destroyed. VERY EXPENSIVE! POLISHING: I've been trying to find how platters are manufactured but I'll bet that involves highly guarded proprietary processes. I found statements that coatings are sputtered onto the magnetic media and that polishing is also performed. Scratches can be polished out of CD's and show car clear coats so the question is how are platters polished and could a polishing method be devised to lower the burrs so they don't contact heads and also to not damage the sputtered coatings that would ruin the ability of the head to function. However since the head flies, the coatings may not be necessary for a data recovery pass. A Sealer coating could possibly encapsulate the embedded debris and also decrease the height of the burr relative to the top of this added coating. There are silicone rubbers that were applied to phonograph records which would bond to the groove debris and when you peeled them off, they pulled it off leaving clean grooves. Such a process could possibly remove embedded debris IF that is a problem. First step is determine the mechanical properties of the coatings and how the platters are polished.

    what does the drive do when it hits that stop (w/the hot glue)? Doesn't the controller think it should be able to go further and keep sending a signal to the arm to move further? seems like it would cause a lot of issues. especially since that's near the center of the spindle, I thought drives typically try to write the most data to the center (then again... depends on the file system... and most don't do a good job at that anyway).

    I don't know how it's done usually but writing/reading data as far away from centre as you can you are getting slightly better speeds ( tracks are longer ) so it would have sense to store data there

  • @colinstu

    @colinstu

    6 жыл бұрын

    Kanapka Z Pasztetem I swear it’s the other way around. Maybe it’s different with today’s drive, but I know on old drives “short stroking” was popular, creating a smaller partition at the beginning of the drive and using that for boot volume / other things that had to be fast. Since the sectors were closer together and head had a shorter distance to travel between tracks closer to the center, it was faster. That’s also why when you look at mechanical drive speed tests, they always start out fast, and performance drops off as it moves away to outer regions of the disk. Unless that’s actually the other way around?? Because I noticed when burning CDs it always went faster at the end, but that’s because the speed was variable and it spun faster too? Hard drive spinning speed is constant (well, further away from center it is technically faster I guess, but sectors are larger or farther apart?). Now I’m really confused.

  • @kanapkazpasztetem

    @kanapkazpasztetem

    6 жыл бұрын

    emm... I actually remember that I read some tutorial about how to setup special little faster partition at end of your disk... it's basic geometry - tracks are longer on edge of disk so with 1 rotation of disk you will read more data = better speed, so it makes sense ... of course other things are standards that will probably force you to store some information about data in specific areas of disk so you can actually make use of it ;) but I don't want to pretend that I know everything in this topic so lets wait for our pro to explain it to us in Q&A hopefully shortly :P

  • @Torekk

    @Torekk

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well according to MyDefrag the beginning of a disc is faster than the end and in terms of harddrives that's the smaller inner circle. But nowadays it's not much difference, what matters is that you don't have huge gaps inbetween. I can highly suggest trying it out for yourself, if you have a mechanical drive. Download a copy of DiskSpeed32, test your drive, then use MyDefrag's monthly script to defrag and optimize your drive, which means moving boot/system files at the start, leaving a gap for new files, then it usually throws the pagefile after and bigger files/stuff you use often(only if you regulary use MyDefrag). It's not much difference compared to the default defragmentation of Windows, but that only defrags the files and doesn't optimizes them on the actual disk. It sped up the start of Windows a lot for me back when I had no SSD yet.

    HDD Recovery Services thanks for the info, i live in UK but I’m pretty sure they might have done a mistake or they are just not that professional to get this spinning! They promised me they will do procedure in their clean lab and they said chances of the fix would be 70% 😊

    Hi, I have 2TB HDD full of Data, but currently I have no access to my Data. I used to use 2 pieces of 2TB HDD in a TeraMaster NAS device. Once I have seen that the NAS device is no more accessible. Then the TerraMaster support center said my be the problem is in the HDDs. Then I sent the device to a Data Recovery company in Cologne, Germany. They said the NAS configuration was JOBD, HDD 02 is alright but empty, HDD 01 is the faulty one and with full of data. After trying one and half month, they said that the head is broken and platter has scratches. Every time they install a new head and try to run it, the new head just get damage again. So they failed to recover any Data. Now I have seen your video that you can recover data from even scratched platters. Please help me save my 20 years of study and a lot a personal data. Otherwise I will be dead. Please help me. I am eagerly waiting for your response. Thanks.

    If the platter is scratched in a 2mm circle somewhere halfway around the platter do you think recovery is still possible using a method like this? The disc cannot startup because the head always stops at the damaged circle and the drive fails such as in this example here kzread.info/dash/bejne/hY6D2sNxqM3Ng84.html just not nearly extensive in done damage
