Scrapping BP Tank Wagon

A BP tank wagon seen here having its tank cut in half and lifted from its chassis by a Komatsu machines big grab at the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railways back yard . The chassis from the tank wagon was retrieved and will go to the Peterhead prison carriage project the sole surviving convict van (one of four built in 1915) is to be restored as part of the "Rocks, Rouges, Rails and Refuge" project to explore this aspect of social and transport heritage. Once completed the van, and associated displays will become part of the Maud Railway Museum, in Aberdeenshire..

That's a crying shame. Even if they needed the chassis they could have used the tank as a display piece or water tower. The railroad museum could have put that tank in the middle of a flower garden.

I spent 20 years as a torchman in a yard......now my torching hand can barely hold a coffee cup on a rainy day. But I DO miss chopping up interesting things. And the smwll of burnt steel. Cheers from Oshawa Canada.

These were built before "hearing protection", can you imagine being one of the riveters building one of these tanks?

At least they seemed to get smarter and use the machine to make sure the torch guy didn't learn how a field amputation worked. There were a couple minutes towards the beginning that had me thinking I've seen better safety practices in videos of Indian ship breaking yards...

I hate to see old stuff destroyed.. Especially when you could either give it to another museum or restore it.. How many more are there left in the world

Did anyone else notice that at 04:40, when the hot metal bracket fell, one of his cutting lines started "hissing around" like a snake. That's probably why he turned off the cutting gases.

I find the vintage tank car of more interest than anything to do with prisoners. If it's too light when empty then use it as a water tender or diesel fuel storage. Just seems a shame.

From the beginning Anybody that has done any kind of Flame Cutting could see that Those gas Hoses were going to get damaged sooner or later, Also Why place the Oxy pack and Propane Cylinder so close to the job, That end bracket could have fallen onto the Oxy Pack.

I knew not to do that shit before I was a first day welding student. That's some slack shit and makes more work for whoever has to splice or replace that hose.

I mean, i would have happily bought it if i had the money. It was preserved for a reason, to give modern day people a glimpse into a time almost forgotten. Now no one will ever see that tanker again. :(

Da blutet einem ja das Herz, wenn heute sowas noch zerstört wird. Und wenn man das Fahrwerk brauch für einen anderen Wagen, dann hätte man auch sicher den Kessel komplett absetzen und erhalten können.

I think that a lot of heritage railways need to do this kind of thing. There so much shite blocking up siding space that is rusting away, highly unlikely to be restored. Such as old wagons, bogies, coaches etc. At the end of the day scrapping the old bits like in this video raises more money for worth while projects

Bring your money then! Everyone wants SOMEONE ELSE to restore objects for them to look at. Anyone reading this is free to devote their life and income to advanced railfanning. Buy property with a rail spur and have at it. There are plenty of old trains but not plenty of well-off people interested in them.

Nice work! I like the use of the gas axe! I could have watched it all day! However, I would suggest a shear to chop off the end parts. Hydraulic shears make it so much quicker! Chop-chop! All gone! I would like to see a steam locomotive being parted up!
