Scrapping a 34lb. compressor for copper and tin. Was it worth more opening it or bringing in sealed?

Hello scrappers and planet lovers. In this video, I will open a
large 34lb. compressor to see if it was worth more money opening and separating the metals or leaving it sealed and getting sealed weight price. I will show you how to safely and effectively identify and separate the metals in order to maximize your profit and divert as much of the material away from the landfill as possible.

    Final tear down: 2.4lbs #2 copper ($7.65) + 31.75lbs tin ($5.02) = $12.73

New scrapper here. I love your content, you are my favorite scrapper on YT so far. Saturday was the first time checking the metal bin at my dump to scrap and I found a 6 foot copper pipe, a Kirby vacuum (all copper wiring), and about 20 feet of coaxial cable. I made my first tool to strip the coaxial cable and it worked okay, but I will be trouble shooting the kinks to make it faster. Took about 3 hours to scrap 8 dollars worth of copper, which for a first try wasn't bad. Already finding ways to improve. Thank you so much for your content, it helps a n00b like me tremendously.

Kirby's are the best vacuums hands-down! I've found like 6 Kirbys so far and 4 of those have worked great. You can buy new belts, bags, impellers, new beater brushes, ect and sell for a pretty penny. 250 bucks used upwards of 5-600 refurbished on fb marketplace. They suck pretty damn good.

Yes, i open mine all up too. i think it is worth it. i have a plasma so it is pretty fast. i also do it in groups and when i pull the unit out i keep them in the upright position at all time after that, even when i carry them. that way when i go to cut them open all remaining oil is in the bottom and i don't make a mess all over my work station. i do let them sit a while to make sure they are drained back down to the bottom after bringing them home and taking the units out. i have an old house trash compacter from like the early 70's outside as my bench, i just set the unit on and i can walk my plasma cutter right around in a circle just above that edge and open that up in less than a minute, usually 30 seconds or less. take out the 4 screws/bolts if they have them and pull the stator/wire out without tipping the unit over and getting the oil all over that was left in it. I also agree i quit taking the aluminum just wasn't worth it, get the copper and the rest goes to scrap i move on to the next unit.

Yeah, grinding discs can be a little more work because I keep having to stop and change them out when I am doing a number of compressors at once.

I just took apart 14 compressor motors today in the beautiful sunshine. It was a little work and a little messy, but looking forward to bring in the #2 copper. Stay well.

Love your video`s.Here`s a video idea. I heat up and pull copper from most brass fittings, valves, any larger brass item`s ,that has copper pipe attached . In the end i have a pail of red brass. pail of yellow brass, then #2 copper in another pail worth $1.00 more a pound. is this worth it ???

Don't know if you scrappers are aware of this. In my area we don't have alleys, people place their trash and recycling at the curb for pickup. any way, if you see a box from the purchase of a microwave or other appliances, always check it. folks usually put their old item in the box out for trash. The box is basically telling you to stop and check it out.

I always check those big empty boxes. I am not always successful, as some just use them to hold other garbage and styrofoam, but I have found the old appliance or electronics on occasion, so always worth checking. Thanks for the comment. Stay well.

take a machete and a hammer and split the stator in half, clamp the half in the vise w copper bundle sticking up and use a long thin prybar /screw driver(harbor freight sells a 20 inch long flat blade screw driver you can grind the sides of the tip almost to a point ,and u can take a hammer and hammer it into the copper and pry CU out,, it works great for prying out things) and the copper pries out easy,,no wear or tear on your grinder..save the oil in the bottom, it makes good cutting fluid on a drill press..some of the pumps inside have a small AL plate you can take off its cast..sometimes a small length of wiring inside too.move your vise out to the edge of table so the stationary jaw is protruding out past the edge of vise at least a half inch and bolt it down ,, this helps with long items, and makes it easier to get around beside item in vise.

Yep, here in Michigan the scrapyards will accept fridges and ac things but they won't pay anything for them because they pay a certified ac reclamation to remove the ac.

What do you do with aluminum wire from motors

I actually just leave it in and bring in as motor weight, a few cents more than tin. The aluminum is lighter and not worth a lot

How you differentiate between copper and aluminium compressor

Unfortunately, you have to gamble and cut through to scratch the coils. I have NEVER had aluminum on dehumidifiers or air conditioners. However ice makers are about 80% aluminum ones I have taken apart. perhaps because they are much smaller than the other ones,
