Scrap-n-Repair: How to fix Kenwood DNX Headunit No Display/ No Power / Status LED RED
This fix will work with any Kenwood head units with a detachable CPU board as shown in the video. Most models are from the DNX series.
The root cause is overheating due to a thermal issue between the CPU and the heatsink. Overheating makes the solder balls change their size and cause open solder or contact issues. A reflow / Reheating / Baking will fix the issue.
Hot Air gun Setting:
Temperature: 250 Degree Celsius
Airflow speed: Knob set at 6
FP-500 No-Clean Flux
Disclaimer: Perform this repair at your own risk touching any internal parts can cause electric shock!
NOTE: I do this pick electronic trash and repair as a hobby during my free time. Most of the units if not needed will be sold online.

Ok,so I had the red light of doom illuminate on my kenwood dnx 525 dab,so my friend and I followed your video to the T,and hey presto !!!! It works again !!!!! Wow !!!!!! Thankyou for the video and advice-It really does work !!!!!👍👍👍👍
Just want to thank you for your detailed video, Kenwood DNX4230DAB got the red tint screen of death last night and wouldn't power back on, was about to pull the trigger on buying a new headunit and came across your video after a quick search - headunit now back in car running like new, just want to say thanks and you have earned a sub. 🏆🥇😉
So took the unit back out, used a blow directional heat unit on the chips, only this time,@ 280 degrees and for 1 minute 20 seconds, all working again, let’s hope that has done the trick this time 😊
Just swapped out a dead DNX 4230DAB at the garage i work at for a customer and made sure to keep it all to one side, will definitely be giving this a go!
Did excatly as in the video. Worked like a song. Many thanks from Germany!
Just have one fixed!! Same problem, same procedure and it's back to life!!! Thanks again.

It worked!!! Unbelievable! I just used a hair dryer and it took no more than 20 minutes, excluding cooling time! Thank you!

What can you replace the thermal pad with to help stop over heating? Thermal grizzlies thermal paste? Or does it have to be a thermal pad?
galing! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
So I hit a bump. And my radio cut out… it had a flashing red light & will eject the disc… but no screen. Help?
It works, thanks.

Any local electronics or mobile repair shop should be able to follow the repair steps I shared.
When you say "remove the SD card", how would you go about replacing that sd card within the daughter board? i see i can take mine out but is that something that can be purchased online or can i just get a new micro sd card and add the maps files needed to it and put that new card in that slot?

I think you put the same card back in the slot after you have the done the reflow.

fix only worked for a few days. so i bought a cheap heat gun ($15) and used a meat thermometer. Aimed heat gun at chip, kept it about 350 degrees F for a couple of minutes on each side. tried to find flux pen but couldn't get one in time. it's been a couple of weeks and still working. thanks again.

no joy. it worked for a few days and then bad again. tried one last thing, just unplugged power and then replugged, and it started fine. i remember seeing this problem when i was researching what i thought was a reflow issue. anyone know who to fix this power problem?

Hi, thank you for a great video... I've done the reflow exactly the same as your video on 3 Kenwood DNX4230DAB units and the procedure as worked, the units all work apart from when I load a CD the units lose power for a split second then restart but stay on the logo, BARBARIAN in this case, any idea on this please? It seems strange all 3 units have the same issue. Thank you, Jack

I think I probably got mine to hot and destroyed it. It didn't work for me
I can't thank you enough. It worked and your video was really clear. I didn't have a flux pen but wiped some normal flux around the chip using the end of zip tie. I used a normal heat gun but protected the plastic connector with the heat shield. Just did it for a minute like u said. I used a temperature gun to make sure it wasn't getting too hot. I used some silicone grease ontop of the chip when rebuilding to aid the heat transfer. My Dad used to use silicone grease on transister heat sinks back in the day when fixing TVs. Is that a special type or will any silicone grease do the job. Again thank you for making this video and sharing your knowledge

@@DBifix ended up using thermal paste cuz someone said they had success with theirs for better heat dissapation but spreading it over the chip on the daughterboard and then putting a glob on the silver of it so that it touches the heat sink, we'll see if it holds up, been working so far.

Yes, work for me till now. The heat applied will melt the solder balls and fix the micro crack or contact issue.

Thanks, this is great I need to try this. Can you recommend the flux pen you are using? Also, is the issue only the CPU - this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIGHqLyaitefibA.html is similar but advises to heat the whole board, and the chip named IC500 ? I am unsure if all board needs heat/flux/reflow - or just the main CPU as in your video? Many thanks!
