'SCRAMBLE' 1982 Motocross film by Syd & Beryl Pearman

Спорт

A 1982 look at the sport of scrambling and motocross. Filmed on 16mm film
When we decided back in 1981, that we would like to make a film about scrambling we thought that some slow motion would be a good idea, preferably in the rain so that mud being flung from the bikes might look good. We went to 3 meetings but there was never any sign of rain when we turned up - in fact it was almost a guarantee for the organizers' of a fine day if we attended. In the end we did the film in the sunshine and the slo-mo wasn't too bad in all the dust. . . . But see what you think.
PS As some experts have pointed out - we got the date wrong. It was 1982 not 1981, we've put it right now. Sorry about that! Syd

What at terrific blast from the past! I started riding at 8 years old in 1974, got my first motocross bike in 1977 and went to my first club race in 1980. We traveled for my dads work so I was fortunate to have raced in Canada (1980-81), Japan (1981-1984) and the US (1984-early 90’s). This video brings back those early racing days so much, captures local club racing perfectly. Thanks for sharing!

As a teenager I used to watch a television show called “Kickstart” narrated by Peter Purves from Blue Peter, which used to be shown on U.K. BBC 1 channel in the late 1970s to early 80s. It showed children competing in Scrambling competitions such as balancing on planks of wood and riding over boulders etc. Some of the competitors were very skilled and I regret the same show would not be remade now because of stupid Health & Safety rules.

+Chris Vincent Hi Chris, Nice to hear from you after - what is it - 34 years? Where have the years gone. The original film has been shown hundreds of times at different shows and your mothers comment always got a good laugh. Incidentally, we donated all our 16mm films - Hover Bover, Scramble, Marathon, Gentle Giants etc., to Mace Film Archive in Lincoln so they are now preserved for posterity. Best wishes to you and everyone who took part in the film, Syd & Beryl

Motocross is not the 100+mph Scrambling that I remember about 10-12 years prior with Triumphs, Beezers, AJS , Enfield and even Ariel. It slowed down even more in stadiums. There are still a few great fast tracks in Europe though - more like road racing on turf and not to be confused with desert racing. Good video here. Times have changed but I miss the speed restricted by the whoop-dee-doos. Still riding on all my broken bones, I enjoyed this presentation.

I only ride in one MX race. Brand new KX80 right off the showroom floor brought to the track by the local Yamaha/Kawasaki dealer. I got to the track with a friend on my dad's TY250, riding double! Waiting for the races to begin Bud Green strolled over to where me and my friend were. He asked if I wanted to ride. I said sure! When we walked to his truck, there it was, a brand spanking new KX80!! I was 12 I think. The first race everyone went for two Laos to determine the classes. I won that short race! I got put in the expert class with two other kids riding modified YZ80s. One of them was a superb rider. The third rider was on an old YZ125 I finished last in the heat race. That was because the third guy and I got tangled up on the last turn coming past the spectators. I held the YZ125 up for my friend so he could start it and then got my ride going and finished the race. When it came time for trophies I didn't get one. When the presentations were done the organizers asked me to come to the front. They presented me with a small plastic trophy cup with "Sportsman of the Day" on it. It's still one of my most precious memories. That superb rider, on the YZ80? He got covered in mud when I won that first race and he still remembers that day like I do but certainly not with as much fondness as I do. His name is Warren Lewis and I hope someday he comes to a better appreciation of that experience. I now own his brothers 1973 RD350 (Brad rode that day years ago, too) and Warren doesn't like that either. Oh the memories. I rode trials on a TY80 back then. I was a decent rider. That day on an MX bike will remain in my thoughts when I watch a fine video like this. Thank you for sharing here with me. Ride safe and always smile at the end of the day! I can't complain too much I rode a 1978 RM 125 it was fun for a few laps but I never had the discomfort of racing one it seem pretty good lucky for me I started racing in 1989 and quickly found my way to a race shop thanks mainly impart to my road racing reputation....there wasn't too many cross overs in those days so my friends must have thought I had some talent because I road raced and did motocross too...I never told them motocross was my first love...let them wonder they kept begging me to quit road racing they didn't want to see me get killed...I liked it because u had traction 95 percent of the time compared to MX...hare scrambles are the best mixing the fun if woods with a little motocross track sections hear an there....looks like fun boy those old bikes did get shite for traction and suspension did they...

Hi, It may have been Kodachrome but sometimes I'd use Fuji VNF (video news film) because I used to know an ITN cameraman who would to let me have the remains of his magazine contents after a days shooting. (they used to like having full 400ft magazines when they went on a job). Regards,Syd

Hi Syd, thanks for that great film. I was racing in the juniors in that year, still racing now with the classic boys. I tried to recognise the track, was Launde Abbey there? And Long Clawson? Cheers, Sean.
