Videography by Matt Ward at www.visualsofscotland.co.uk
Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I love these road trip videos. I’ve always known but, it never ceases to amaze me just how much places in Scotland look like my families homelands in Appalachia or the places I see in the south where I live and grew-up. Little wonder my people settled where they did. What a beautiful country you’ve got there!

There are geologists who now think that the mountains of Scotland and the Appalachian Mountains were all once the same mountain range before the continents split. They are about the same age so it's possible. But there are letters that my old mountain friends had that were written by their great-great grandparents who settled in eastern Tennessee because it looked so much like the Highlands that they were forced to leave behind in Scotland. I'd say your eyes are quite sharp!

@@nancyholcombe8030 That's true, but this part of Scotland was joined to the England side, not the American. The lost ocean of Iapetus was north of here, in the Central Lowland Belt.

Dear Bruce - There was an empty plate when there was an opportunity to show the rest of the world a proper Scottish breakfast. As Samuel Johnson once said: "If an epicure could remove by a wish, in quest of sensual gratifications, wherever he had supped he would breakfast in Scotland." There are monuments, kirks, statues and landscapes where beauty belies treachery , but few people outside Scotland know the perfection of a square sausage. Just saying 😉

I've only just now realised that, apart from on the way elsewhere (the place which must not be mentioned or the ferry to Ireland) I've spent only a few days of my 56 years in the Borders. Probably no more than half a week. I've likely spent more time in branches of the bookshop 'Borders'! This video has made me realise I need to go spend some time down there if I can ever afford a holiday again! Edit: I just remembered I played a weekend chess congress in Hawick around 2005/6, taking it to maybe nearly a week down there. It wasn't a good weekend with just 2 wins and a draw from 5 matches, which would have been fine if four of my opponents were under 16 and two of them under 10. The one under 10 whom I lost to was playing for Scotland a couple of years later and is currently way stronger than me (I think she might even have a Master title by now) but that was no consolation at the time, which may be a part of why I forgot about being there earlier.

Cracking part of the country that always seems to be missed by tourists as they go north for the more famous Highlands. I used to go to the annual Wickerman Festival just on the hills outside of Dundrennan and I'd always pass by the Abbey, so beautiful even as a ruin. Glen Trool is also a little known gem with the story of the Bruce, I stayed overnight down by Loch Trool in my hammock before visiting Bruce's footsteps. Shame aboot that drone though lol.

I love so many parts of Scotland but this is where we visit most, since we can see it across the Solway and have many friends there. You made another great video Bruce. The Cairn Holy sites are always lonely and empty in my experience and that makes it so much more personal. Our ancestors were not uncivilised were they? To build those monuments took hundreds of people all working together and that meant planning, housing and feeding. It's easy to underestimate them.

Bruce, you’re certainly a scholar and a poet. Maybe not a troubadour. I enjoyed this journey through space and time.

No Threave is super I used to work there !!!!! Lols hoist your braces ! The Kirkcudbright Centipede still comes out at gala day. I am a pendant and proud of it They knew earth was round there 3 stone circles in the hills behind marking the solar and lunar movements and possibly the stars. You missed the best bits of Galloway you will have to go again.

Dumfries and Galloway , the forgotten corner of Scotland , along with Fife .so many nice places and small towns and villages to visit . Used to go down every two or three years from Aberdeenshire , haven’t been for while , a nice drive is from Glen Trool up through the hills to Dalmellington in south Ayrshire and then on to Douglas , the stomping ground of the Black Douglass .😊

Bruce ya know why Galloway really makes you connect with inner peace?. OK yes the scenery is fantastic & aye there's a ton of things to see & do....but there is something truly magical that doesn't care is your Scottish, British, white, black, straight, gay, identify as a chocolate teapot, even a.....traffic warden😳. And that is the Dark Sky Park in the Galloway forest. I used to go on holibags to a caravan at Gatehouse of Fleet & late on at night my wee entourage & I would almost cause ourselves permanent spinal problems by staring up into the night sky, into not a black void but the most unbelievably busy colourful universe above us & realising just how small we are not as Scots, Brits or anything else that mere mortal humans on a tiny spit of sand in a endless sea. Humble doesn't do it justice bráther.

There’s a little known burial Cairn and stone circle near me. 4000 years old. Hardly anybody goes there, they tend to flick to the larger Clava Cairns.
