Scott Spark RC MTB XC V Enduro Live Ride Review

Спорт

Can Scott's Spark RC WC XC racer survive or even thrive on one of the toughest UK Enduro Race Courses? Not only is Scott's feature loaded Spark one of the fastest, most successful XC race bikes, it's radical geometry makes it a proper trail ripper too. But how much hardcore terrain can it really handle? I charged round as lead Marshall for the Ard Rock Epic Enduro Marathon to find out!
Thanks to Giro, Peaty’s and Crud for sponsoring the channel, Scott for lending me the bike for test and for my Patreon supporters for their monthly pledges. It will be good to hear the fix for the squeak. I thought i could hear it while you were not pedaling so wondered if the pivots need a clean and grease. Probably do anyway if it's been riden like that on the demo fleet.

    Nice review, like always. You don’t like the XTR brakes? Is it the single or two piston version? Can you give some recommendations for some good XC brakes? Not sure if I should go for the Spark RC, Canyon Lux CFR or wait for the new Orbea Oiz 😅 Do you have a personal top 3 of current full sus XC race bikes…

    Thanks Graham. We went pretty hard on that one and I certainly paid for it on the first few climbs doing the same lap the next day. Especially on a Hightower with a big sticky tyre on the front. That made a real difference on the descents though and I managed to eat my way back into the game by stage 4.

    I almost bought a Spark but I didn't like the Twin Lock remote system which I felt was just too much cable and too much unnecessary tech. In addition, I really hated the through the headset cable routing system which required all kinds of extra labor and expensive proprietary parts to make any changes or repairs.

    Actually you’re right. I should have made more of a stink about the potential headset pain further down the line. At least on the Spark you get a range of different stems etc though, plus the angle adjustment.

    If you're into XC the twinloc is wonderfull. I'v tried bike with 2 position switch and they're either tweaked to climb well (scalpel) or to descend well (epic evo) but they never quite do both properly. Also no remote for racing would be nonsense, i don't want to miss a hand on my bar. The passthrough headset only problem is changing upper bearing. Other job really are not a problem.

    There was a guy did the same race as this on an old Boardman HT with no dropper and a longer than it should have 20 year old Fox fork in it. He wasn't much slower than me either. It's always more about the rider than the bike!

    Nice review! Do you think the WC version is worth the money over the Team Issue?

  • @GuyKesTV

    @GuyKesTV

    Жыл бұрын

    If you're desperate to get rid of every gram maybe. But the frame is the same and there's not much difference in wheel weight between the alloy on the TI and the carbon on the WC. If it was me I'd just add a dropper to the TI and spend the money I saved on a coaching plan if I wanted to get much faster!

    epic 8 s works to top line Scott Spark, for overall bike feel and occasional race, which would you choose?

  • @GuyKesTV

    @GuyKesTV

    I'd say Epic 8 but I'd say if you're only racing occasionally the Flight Attendant on the S-Works is overkill so I'd go for the Pro model

    How do you compare the Saprk with the Epic Evo? And well done, strong effort!

  • @GuyKesTV

    @GuyKesTV

    Thanks and thanks for the question too. It's funny as someone just asked the same on the tech talk video too! The Epic Evo frame is lighter than the HMF by around 200g I think. And that weight is the same on all the Epic Evo (the S-Works just has a carbon link which saves an extra 90g) while Spark comes in three carbon grades. The actual suspension kinematic/feel is surprisingly similar between the Evo and the Spark in 'open' too. Neutral and grippy but slightly bouncy when you're really grunting. That's where the Scott remote suspension control comes in and if you're happy making use of the levers I think it's a real advantage. Some people hate all the clutter though and much prefer a cleaner - set and forget system. The Evo definitely wins there and it's interesting to see a lot of the Spesh team racers on the Evo not the Brain Epic these days. Geometry is also similar (head angle of Evo is exactly between the two Spark options) but the Spark is a lot stiffer and more accurate. Spark spec value is a lot better too. For £250 more than the SRAM NX Evo you get GX AXS on a Scott. hope that helps some but the real problem seems to be finding either of them in stock so good luck with that.

    @@GuyKesTV thank you so much for the answer. I'm blown away by the detail and depth of it. Matter of fact is I already have a Epic Evo Pro, but I just wanted to know if I was missing out. I was indecisive until the end on which one to buy. I'm very happy with te Epic, and been riding it almost everyday since March. Thanks again, and keep up the excellent work!

    Hi I can highly recommend the S Works Epic Evo, bought the frame and built it Fox 34s and XTR. It’s incredible. Couldn’t find a Spark at the time, that was on the shopping list too.

    @@artemartem7534 no problem 👍. Most stages are okay, but probably worth getting a bike shop to bleed the brakes and perhaps set up the suspension as it’s a good spec build it’s worth having it tuned well. Everything else was pretty straightforward, with some help from KZread of course! I built mine mostly with xtr I sourced popular on line stores and eBay where harder to source, Fox 34s, and Nobl wheels on Industry Nine hubs. Built in jan22 parts were harder to obtain than now. Hope that helps
