There is an imperfection in the translation of the Italian into French and, consequently, in English, when he speaks of The Mysterious Barricades. He does not say "This work makes me think of an express train with very luxurious, very plush carriages" but he says " makes me think of an express train, WHEN ON THE CONTRARY it is a very luxurious work, very sensual, and so I prefer to play it like that .. "

So honored, thank you! But let me specify: he never says the words “your way of playing this work”, so probably it is better to put them between parentheses. By the way it is the meaning of what he says (and he often talks about flat way to play like train, tgv or machine à coudre during such precious video).

Allora, io preferisco così Well spotted noelemusic! It's clear "assomiglia" refers to the way the piece has just been played.

RIP Nicolau de Figueiredo 1960-2016 (heart attack) I was a bit shocked to hear about it. Live life like there's no tomorrow, because one day, it will be so for you.
Merci, mon ami.
His comments about performance practice on piano are absolutely brilliant. He was a very articulate man and of course a supreme musician.
ce reportage est une leçon de vie.
RIP my dear and beloved friend Nicolau Figueiredo...you are alive in our hearts, don't worry...
Genialità a livello puro. Virtuosismo tecnico senza pari, pregnanza poetica senza pari................
Ce portrait est très touchant.. Un vrai petit bijou.. inestimable.
Scott Ross was so talented. Bach would have loved to hear him play his music. I don't know if there is a clavecinist I love as much as Scott Ross today. Maybe Mahan Esfahani?
Thank you for sharing this piece of rare gem. It gave me a great pleasure seeing such a maestro at work.

Scott Ross ... the greatest ! " Rest in peace " ...
Thank you for posting this. I am an unschooled musician, very fond of the Baroque. It seems that daily there are new discoveries. And this was yet another one of them!! How timeless beauty is, in a time without beauty.
Thanks so much for posting this! I have loved music from the era of the harpsichord all my life, but not so much the harpsichord itself. I have been wandering around searching out music by the harpsichord in the hope that I may come to an understanding of it before I die. I'm an old guy so this is something rather urgent. The harpsichord, so similar to the piano in many ways is so different. The method of phrasing, articulation, the manner of expressing the melodic and rhythmic elements is so unlike the piano. Coming across Scott Ross and this video is truly enlightening. I feel as though I have inadvertently stumbled upon ingots of gold! I am a rich man today!

You might also check out performances on the clavichord, which has a different type of expressivity, and was Bach’s personal favorite instrument. There are a lot of videos by Wim Winters and Ryan Lane Whitney, who has a clavichord similar to my own.

Really good video. Thanks for sharing! Always refreshing to hear the insights of masters in Bachs music. It's somehow sad, that he died in this year, way too early. I think he has a certain sadness in his eyes, which maybe helped him to understand the music.
I just love how this harpsichord sounds.
Amidst countless insignificant lives, this genius is no more, but his brilliance lives on, in hearts galore.

As you can see from this video, he just look at himself as honest person true to the music he loved and decided to MASTER and perform! I can 100% understand his remarks about other "musicians" that only played repertoire not because they love it but because it was probably good for their career/name and they calculated that they would get fame and money from it but in reality they produced a total **** compared to this giant. It is sad that Scott Ross is not much more famous compared to other career/ego "anti-musicians" that only aimed to hit all the notes in their distorted michine-like-anti-musical vision and then quickly to jump to another $ opportunity. Luckily it is all in the recordings and every musically non-retarded person will just hear what is "ego-anti-music-done-in-least-ammount-of-time-to-impress-the-retarted-crowds" and what is the "real thing" so Scott Ross recordings are gonna be immortal in this sense.
yep Bach music is very analytical that is the best word for it always engaging intellectual properties perhaps even more than the sound

R.I.P. Scott Ross.
Documento davvero eccezionale, grazie! Me ne rammarico molto!
Magnificent. But Scott forgets that (1) Gould was playing on a Piano and (2) That he was responding to Tureck and Landowska. Each interesting in their own way. Glenn was uneasy about Horowitz but never maligned him. Shame Scott never met Glenn; and that Monsaigneon never fillmed Ross. Horowitz's Scarlatti is really a comment on his Rachmaninoff. Scott ignores that. Scott's Yin Yang structural remarks are dead-on. Thanks to Genevieve for sharing!
Superb

seeing these worlds collide makes a man cry
Scott looks exactly like my barista
At 36'31" he has a go at Glenn Gould, but actually plays more like a caricature of Rosalyn Tureck. Ross wouldn't be the first person to feel compelled to attack Gould..somehow I suspect the latter would find it terribly amusing!
@CesarJoseee

He does say he is a little to hard on him, and I agree. Gould was a unique and special person and in his Bach recordings he plays them in a way many others haven't. In a sense I feel he was a bit of a contrarian. If it was agreed among most other musicans that a certain piece was to be played slow he would either play it fast or even slower and vice versa. Recordings are permanent and something future generations will hear but I get a sense Gould didn't care about this fact, he just recorded a piece according to how he felt that specific day. He was a strange one.

I think he very much respects Gould but is very frustrated by Gould at the same time. Love/hate relationship, but one founded on respect.
