Episode 165: Scott Peterson
December 24, 2002. Modesto, CA. A pregnant woman disappears while supposedly walking her dog. After authorities are notified, they react quickly in the hopes of discovering her whereabouts. It will not take long before one man becomes the focus of the investigation. Her husband, Scott. Suspicious circumstantial evidence turns up, including hair in a pair of pliers consistent with his wife's as well as evidence of 5 homemade cement anchors of which only one remains. Could he have murdered her and weighted her down to hide her in the bay where he claims to have gone fishing? Months later, the bodies of Laci Peterson as well as that of her unborn son are found near the bay about a mile apart. It appears as though they had washed ashore. A jury would ultimately find Scott guilty. Some say that Scott was not given a fair trial and that his conviction was not supported by enough evidence. Was there a sufficient case made to prove his guilt? Or did his questionable lifestyle doom him from the start? A true crime episode.

When I saw the picture of the fishing gear that Scott said he was using to fish for stergeon I knew he was guilty. The fishing gear was light tackle for freshwater fish not the heavy rods and reels that are needed for huge and heavy stergeon.

He was in a lake boat. It didn't even belong in salt water. There are so many lakes near Modesto, but for "some reason" he wanted to take it 90 miles out from his home and fish for Sturgeon that...even if he was lucky to catch one, wouldn't even fit in his boat. Those fish are really big! Scott Peterson is a LIAR!!

My thing is this: I do not believe that a woman would leave the house and leave the door unlocked. When I go walking, I lock the door and my keys are with me. When Peterson got home, the door was unlocked and Laci's keys were still there with her purse. Hard to believe she ever left the house.

Scott killed Laci and just left things where they were instead of trying to get rid of her things. I'm just so glad that storm we had was so harsh it brought Laci and Connor up to the surface, otherwise he would be walking among us.

  • @motocatz87

It's clear Laci knew Scott was a cheat but she might have thought after they were married he would change. I think Scott enjoyed the way Laci loved him. She cooked, cleaned and took care of him. Scott continued being Scott and once she got pregnant it was over for him. Connor was going to be the center of all the family and Laci's attention, she also would want Scott home more. If he got a divorce the thought of having to pay alimony to Laci and Conner I believe would be unimaginable for Scott. This was a man who spent lots of money on his mistresses...wine, dozens of roses, dinner, drinks, hotel rooms. There would be no way for him to continue paying, not to mention his favorite pass time was golfing at a country club. Everything he was doing cost a lot of money. I think in his sick mind getting rid of Laci and Conner was his only option to continue his fantasy life style. I say fantasy because he wanted to be that guy who travels the world and is not held down by any one person.

Who leaves texts and phone messages you don't expect an answer to, and don't wait for any to, unless you already know that the person is no longer alive and can't answer because you killed them? And I believe he killed her the night before. She never was on the computer that morning, it was Scott. He simply accessed her account to make it look like it was her. I have some of those online ordering accounts on my computer and they could easily be accessed by someone pretending to be me while browsing or putting items in a 'cart' online. Doubtless, that's what he did.

There are huge problems with the statements from so called witnesses who see Laci with black trousers on. Because she was not found with that colour on the waist band when the torso was washed up. Secondly she'd have to be barefoot because her walking shoes were at home . Police established there were other pregnant women with dogs in the area at the time. Some of these witnesses are bored people who simply want to be famous. NB if you murder someone at home at night and then dump them somewhere else you might well forget to put their outside shoes on before you do the removal. Finally by Scot's own admission her keys were in the house and the door was open. It sounds as if he 's thinking of a story that she was snatched from the house because if she was out with the dog, then she must have locked the door if she left after he did - which is what he says. At this point, he has no idea that a convenient burglary is about to happen but only in a 50 hour window of time. The neighbour who was burgled could have been burgled any time from about 11am onwards on 24th, on the 25th or on the 26th. The police say the 26th December but that's based on what the criminals told them. Most burglars do not operate in the middle of the day. There are exceptions but that's the general rule. Scott initially tells people he's going to go golfing . Then he goes out on the bay. He then tells someone he went fishing. He 's go the receipt to prove it. Finally when the LE get involved he sticks to the fishing story. He likely told the golf story because it was a windy cold day and going fishing would make no sense to those of Laci's family he told firstup. Also Ron was a fisherman , Scott does not want Ron G to come along. When he's out at the warehouse he cuts himself on the hand while messing around with assembling a router machine. This is highly convenient if he cut himself earlier and wants and alibi for a cut. So there's no rush about going fishing even though it is an hr and a half at least away from Modesto. When he gets back he sees Laci is missing because the keys have been left behind (give him benefit of doubt) and rings the Rochas immediately without ringing Laci's phone to check where she might be. Now that's strange, she went out presumably on foot or in a friend's car without her keys and purse but she did take her phone. The door is left unlocked - he says. That's unprovable. it seems highly inconsistent. However he's already rung Laci's phone - alibi call- on the way back from the fishing trip. It of course goes unanswered. It's Ron Granski who rings the LE, not Scott. Rather than leaving the boat cover on the boat out in the warehouse , he brings it back home and puts it in the garden shed where it gets saturated in Gasoline in a pseudo accident . It is therefore useless forensically. What a chain of coincidences and inconsistencies and we are only about 7 hrs in. TEF

You stated the Modesto Police did a "fantastic job". I would disagree. The manager of Scotts' warehouse said Lacy was there with the boat and Det. Brochini left it out of his report. The Aponte tape was given to the Modesto police and it disappeared . And the van that was seen by Diane Jackson, which she saw Lacy with the men had a mattress with blood on it and set on fire a mile from lacys house, which the police never tested! So where exactly is this "fabulous job" that the Police did??
