    Great interview! As a vegan runner on a 90/5/5 diet I am wondering: What does he need all that protein for? The lower limit for humans is 2.5% of total calories. You can not get that low if you eat whole foods. Example: Bananas have 4% protein, including all essential amino acids. WHO recommendation is 5%, that is 2.5% + 100% safety margin - more than plenty! Taking into account that most vegetables and greens are much higher in protein (examples: Tomato ~15%, kale ~15%), I find it sometimes difficult to stay below 10%, especially whenever we have beans, peas or lentils. It is very easy to get above 10% which seems to be too much: Body odor comes back, energy levels and recovery times are not as good...

    Plant-based diets are less dense in calories than other dietary patterns. You probably aren't eating enough calories. Focus on grain, legumes, and tubers (starches -- foods rich in complex carbohydrates) for the staples of your diet.

    I totally agree with UrbaneScorpion... It sounds like you are not getting enough calories. My personal pre-workout snack is a handful of dates and a banana. I blend it up with rice milk (and occasionally add a teaspoon of matcha). Totally fires me up :)

    I disagree with Scott a bit about protein and worrying about the other individual components of the diet. As long as you're eating whole plant foods including lots of leafy greens, you're going to get more than enough protein, fatty acids, etc. I'd also recommend avoiding oil, which is nothing but a processed food, extremely calorically dense, and nutritionally deficient.

  • @rickcyclist5844

    @rickcyclist5844

    9 жыл бұрын

    I used to think that but it doesn't work for me since I don't eat too many carbs. Building an aerobic base teaches the body to prioritise burning fat and protein as fuel, as opposed to carbohydrates. If I don't supplement with a protein drink - I use either wheatgrass or hemp powder in a smoothie - I get pretty gaunt.

  • @PaDutchRunner

    @PaDutchRunner

    9 жыл бұрын

    That sounds like a nice problem to have. I run about 30 mpw, soon to be increased to about 50. Carbs have sustained me so far, but I'll definitely keep your comment in mind.

    Stephen Otto Far too calorically dense without sufficient nutrition to show for it. And like I said, whether it is virgin or not, it will damage endothelial cells. We've got an epidemic of heart disease in this country, and it isn't just due to animal products. I think oil is equally to blame.
