Despite British Rail often being criticised and failing with the APT , they came up with a gem in 125. These trains must have repaid their investment many times over with their long service life. I remember rue days when you could actually drive into Waverley Station and even park if you were lucky. The best service was The Flying Scotsman which departed Edinburgh ( the starting point unlike nowadays ) at 10 am with one stop at Newcastle and then belted down to King’s Cross arrive just before 3 pm.

I love this report and the way you talk to the trains in your comments, The Intercity 125 was the backbone of long distance travel in the UK. A great train.

Edinburgh Waverley is one of the most unforgettable railway stations I’ve set foot in. The way the roof is covered with window panels made me think about how people crave sunlight in this far northern city. And I found Edinburgh such a chilly place in May 2008...but was also privileged to spend the better part of a whole day around the Forth Bridge taking in the might and the grandeur.

A great video as always Thibault! Really glad you got to sample a HST along the East Coast Main Line before they finished their service with LNER. Also, weren't you lucky to have record holder 43302 as one of the pair of class 43 forming the HST you had! 👌 They will be very much missed for travelling on the ECML, but as others have said HSTs in various forms are going to continue in service for some time to come. Hopefully you'll get a chance to sample them sometime in the near future. Keep up the great videos, & I look forward to the next one! 👍

Thanks again, great report. I will miss these trains but, like everything, the world moves on and the HSTs were probably past their best. Hopefully the 800s will improve journey times with their faster acceleration, although I will miss the cosiness on the MK3 stock as the new trains have a more austere interior trim level.

If you mean that the 800s are shite boxes ,I agree , the GWR stock of 880 class are shockingly poor in both comfort and build quality. The seats are like a rock to sit on , there is no buffet car so If your not at the start of the trolley cart service you more than likly wont get anthing you want, and the train built out of 2 5car unites stops you from walking the entire length of the train so if can pick the wrong 5 car unite thar might be jamed full of people only to see there was plenty of room in the second 5 car unit. Give me a 40 year old Hst 125 anyday as the class 800 has set passenger comfort back 50 years or more. Driving to Cardiff for me is the option now.

Excellent video as always Thibault! You will still be able to ride on HSTs for some years to come: East Midlands Trains are still using them, including some of the ex-LNER trains, between London St Pancras and Sheffield via Derby or Nottingham. Arriva Cross Country have 4 sets which they use on certain Edinburgh - Plymouth services. Additionally, ScotRail are using some shortened (5 car) sets on services from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Aberdeen and Inverness, while Great Western Railway are using some other shortened sets (4 cars, I think) on services between Cardiff and Penzance. The Mark 3 stock is the UK equivalent of the SNCF Corail stock - in my opinion the most comfortable (originally) and smoothest-riding stock in both countries, having been introduced at about the same time in the mid-seventies. Most of the East Midlands Trains vehicles still have the original more spacious and comfortable seating layout. You should try them if you get the chance!

Pennine Trains I live on the MML, and the East Midlands Railway’s HSTs are the worst. The MK3s have a terrible terrible suspension and it’s like being on the pacific in stormy weather. I love HSTs, but not really the EMR ones. Still nice to be on one, but along the MML, the 222’s are nicer.

  • @penninetrains1398

    @penninetrains1398

@@CS_22 Don't you think that could be at least partly due to poor track maintenance? I've noticed in recent years a lot of wet spots on the Southern section of the MML and they really make the bogies bounce and sway. Having said that, the ECML South of Doncaster is not that great at the moment either. In their day, the mark 3 vehicles - both HST and loco-hauled - were the best riding carriages on BR, given good permanent way, but I guess that age and increasingly difficult maintenance must be taking their toll!

Pennine Trains Maybe true, but I’m sure the GWR track is worse, and there HSTs were good. The 222’s have much better suspensions it seems, as they are comfier to ride on.

Just to let you know Crosscountry has 5 HSTs sets. However each weekday only 4 of them are in use. the 5th one is kept at the depot in case one breaks down. Interesting fact though 4 of the 5 have sliding doors, whereas the 5th one has standard doors. According to one of the XC's staff, the 5th HST isn't one they regularly use in service so XC left it as it is. So if you see a XC set with standard doors you know it's the spare one. Regarding East Midland Railway, I have noticed their original HST sets are more bouncy and give off more noise than say the 222. However if you do want a comfortable HST ride, I recommend the angel sets (the ex-Grand central ones) as they seem to be a whole lot better than EMR's HSTs. Below are the weekday services that uses the angel sets if you need them. DY021 1C18 0731 DBY-STP, 1D21 1005 STP-NOT 1C52 1359 SHF-STP, 1M40 1650 STP-COR, 1P41 1837 COR-STP, 1F72 2031 STP-DBY, DY022 1B79 1945 NOT-STP, 1D81 2200 STP-NOT

It's nice to see the Mark 3 coaches still in service after 45 years. And sadly some of them were sent to the scrapyards this year. Irish Rail got a fleet of these coaches in 1984 with electric doors instead of slam doors, which were taken out of service in 2009 after been replaced by the 22000 Class Intercity Railcar, and were scrapped in 2014.

In the 1980s I travelled by HST in the other direction. Edinburgh Waverley station hasn't changed a bit 😁 HST was quite an experience back then. The smooth, quiet ride. The original 2nd class interior was better: full-size tables (as in 1st class but with 4 seats abreast), more legroom. Lighter colors, giving a more spacious feel within the smaller size of the Mk.3 coach compared to European mainland. No smartphones, no internet, no worries about power sockets and WiFi 😁 That trip on HST is still one of the best I can remember.

Which speed they reach on the track ? On the whole journey, and top speed, and some pieces higher speed than others I suppose. This looks at at least 160 km/hour.

Very sadly I totally agree. Travelled on the Lumo 803 and it was so packed on one of the early promotion packed trains it was like being in a sardine can. I also remember the first trip on one of the 800’s from Doncaster to Peterborough. If the train had stopped at an intermediate station, I would have got off and waited for another train. Yes the HST’s were over 40 years old but was it beyond the imagination of designers to update a quality product into the 21st century. 800’s 👎

As well as the Talgo record never being officially verified, it was also with an experimental train. The HST record is pretty unique in that it used a normal service train, carrying passengers. It was slightly shorter than normal, but otherwise unmodified (with the exception of disabling the speed limiter).

Also want to point out that LNER aka government didn’t come into swing until March of 2018 as this was the time the Azumas were being tested. Big screw up by Virgin and then a year and a half later they lost the west coast 😂

4:20 Virgin lost the franchise in June 2018, not November 2017. I went on Virgin in 2018 before they became LNER. Frankly LNER look like they've made things worse since Virgin, as less trains are on time and the Azumas aren't as comfortable as an HST. The Azuma has big shoes to fill.

Yes they are shorter formations with 4 carriages (so called HST GTi 🤣 ) retrofitted with effluent tanks for the toilets (rather than dumping on the tracks) and sliding outside doors. With only 4 cars they will have acceleration similar to Sprinters & electric trains. They would have even better acceleration if the power cars were lower geared as in the Australian XPT (design speed 160 km/h) but the HST gearing has been retained.

The Class 80x replacements for the 125, and 225 sets are nice to look at, but once inside, awful. As the coaches are longer, to fit the loading gauge they're narrower than the previous. Sitting in the aisle on already uncomfortable seat is torture when people are moving through the train, and even worse with luggage as you'll invariably be walloped by a rucksack. I'd rather fly than spend 6 hours on one.

I can't understand why there are no train no.s for British Railways. How did companies and other railway workers refer to each trains? I mean, do they refer to trains as something like "GWR train departing at 1300 from London Euston to London Piccadilly"? The trains do have numbers. The service featured in this video, for instance, is train 1E15. However, these numbers are used only internally (by staff) and are not announced to the public. (If you really want to know the numbers, they are shown in the Working Timetable, which is available on the internet.)
