Scotland’s Carboniferous Fossils

Ғылым және технология

Join Scottish Geology Trust Secretary, Dr Katie Strang, to learn all about Scotland's Carboniferous fossils! The rocks of the Midland Valley were deposited over 300 million years ago when Scotland was situated at low latitudes near to the equator, resulting in a hot and humid climate. Some areas were covered by shallow tropical seas full of diverse marine life, whilst other parts were covered by vast, dense rainforests that eventually went on to form the abundant coal seams which drove our industrial revolution. This talk will explore the different types of organisms that inhabited Scotland during this period; from predatory freshwater fish and their coprolites, to giant sea 'scorpions' roaming the shores, to bustling coral reefs full of invertebrates, to perfectly preserved delicate plants. Come and learn more about Scotland's rich palaeontological heritage and how we can use these fossils to discover more about our past, and how studying them can help us plan for our future!

I have just found an interest in fossils. This is my first video in fact, and well it was great. Thanks. I am from Central Scotland. What is a good place to start looking near Glasgow?

Very interesting but what about sites in the west coast. Yeah it's got some but nowhere near as many as the east coast. Surely fossils are jn thus area also??
