Scotland 0-2 England (1989)

Спорт

What turns out to be the last annual meeting between Scotland and England ends in away victory at Hampden Park in May 1989. Due to the Liverpool v Arsenal title decider the previous night, no players from either club are on show in this Rous Cup tie and England experiment in attack by starting with John Fashanu and bringing on Steve Bull (who had spent the past two seasons scoring for fun in the 4th Divsion and 3rd Division with Wolves). After Chris Waddle gives England the lead, Bull seals the win late on and almost gets another on a dream debut. The sides will not meet again until drawn together at Euro 96.

Couple of things of note. 1. The commentator was disrespectful to SB. Saying that it's his sheer determination that gets him through as he was stumbling over. Bull was simply off balance at that moment. SB had a lot of technical ability too...and one of the best "finishers" I've ever seen. 2. Chris Waddle's haircut gave him an unfair advantage for that header. 3. Roy Aitken's shots always threatened the corner flags than they did the opposition's net!!

I totally agree with you, except for.... "Chris Waddle's haircut gave him an unfair advantage for that header". I pretty sure that such a bold claim wouldn't stand up to even the merest scientific scrutiny. 🧐 But even so, there is nothing in the FA Rules and Regulations forbiding 'bullet mullets', so, technically speaking, there is no case to answer regarding such being "unfair" or not.

Exactly, it was the same during the 86 World Cup, I watched the England v Poland game in a pub and only about a third of the pub was interested. Same as Itala 90, only about a third of the pub we’re watching the England v Belgium game in a small corner of a pub in Camden Town. It all changed after the Cameroon game. I always respected people that were just not into football back then. Unlike now, fake plastics everywhere.

Kailash Patel You make some good points. I never really thought much about people not going on mass to the pub pre Euro 96, yes, games were on in pubs before then, but most people watched the match at home. Regarding the Poland game kick off UK time was 19:30 or 19:45, I think Mexico is about 6 hours behind the U.K. time wise.

@@Dinobaburas. Sky only got involved in football in the early '90s - the decline of Scottish football began before that. English clubs spent all their money on foreigners? Bit rich that. The last time either Celtic or Rangers were half decent they barely had a Scotsman in the team between them. When Martn O'Neils Celtic team were doing well in Europe and contested the UEFA Cup final in 2003 they had one Scotsman in their team and three Englishman. The last time Rangers were picking up decent results in the Champions League they were full of Dutchman, as I recall. Before that they were dependent on players like Gazza and Laudrup. And neither club has produced a top class Scottish player between them in well over two decades (jury is still out Tierney). Who was the last? Genuinely can't think of a single one in the last 30 years? Hibernian and Motherwell have produced more top class Scottish talent than the Old Firm in the last three decades. Even now, and without money, Rangers are dominated by foreign and English players. Need to start producing some quality homegrown players again. You talk about English clubs spending money on foreigners, but at least the top English sides have home grown players in the team and quality youngsters in their squads/ breaking into their teams. England internationals like Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Abraham, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Foden, Mount, Winks, Gomez, Tomori and Trent all came through the academies of top 6 clubs in recent years. Before that you had United's class of '92 and Gerrard, Carragher, Owen and Fowler from Liverpool. And that's just from two clubs and two cities. Why aren't the Old Firm matching that? They've a similar size population to pick from in the local region, plus Scotland in general. Anyway, what really killed Scottish football as a Sky product for the neutral was Rangers going bust when they did. Nothing to sell without the Old Firm rivalry. They're back now, and the competitiveness of the league and results in Europe are picking up again. Interest from outside Scotland and Ireland may also pick up as a result.

@@jamesmason8436 you termed (bit rich that) That's easy for you to say ALL the money is getting thrown at english football, you mentioned home grown I counted 11 there is that the sum total for all the cash sky, bt, the english government are throwing at them, most of the players you mention have still to be proven, yes we had a lot of foreigners in our league but english pundits media keep mentioning english football that's how you fall flat in the international tournaments don't mention the last world Cup the draw was the easiest pass in history! And the golden generation a term devised by the media that never came to anything either! The lesser league's in england get more cash than Scotland, when england enter a tiddlywinks competition they get finance to the hilt and (oh wer gonna win it this time).

@@Dinobaburas. I actually listed 12 players, and there are many more I could list - I just went for English players who'd played for the national team that had come through a top six academy (specifically Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs). Plenty of other kids who are playing regularly for those top six sides who've yet to play for England (Saka, Smith-Rowe, Nelson, Maitland-Niles, Greenwood, Williams, Skipp, Walker-Peters, Willock, Nketiah, Jones, Elliot, James etc), and other English players at those clubs who didn't come through their academies (Henderson, Maguire, Stones, Wan-Bisaka, Walker, Shaw, Alli, Dier, Holding, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Barkley etc). You say they're unproven but many of the English players in both of my lists have played in European finals and at the last World Cup. The Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arenal contingent all played in European finals just last season, and United (with Rashford, Smalling, Lingard, Young and Shaw) won the Europa League a few seasons ago as well. And this is just top six clubs, plenty of other good English teams and players throughout the league and even abroad (Sancho, Trippier, Young, Kenny and Smalling). Leicester alone have several great young English players. English clubs at least have the excuse of having too much money, hence why they're quicker to import a ready made foreign international than give a kid a chance - what's the excuse up in Scotland? The league should be awash with homegrown Scottish talent yet is full Championship/ League One quality English players and foreigners. Only 50% of the SPL are Scottish players when the figure could and should be far higher. You mention the Golden Generation and England's various other failures and I won't argue. We too haven't produced enough quality over the years (though there's a generation coming through who look brilliant and have wom world titles at youth level), but we have at least produced *some* quality. Many objectively world class players like Lampard, Scholes, Rooney, Cole, Gerrard, Owen, Ferrinand and Terry. Even if they couldn't function as a team and deliver a title they were still great players who reached quarter finals of major tournaments and lost on pens to other world class teams and players. Scotland can't even produce a team to qualify for a tournament these days! Huge difference. And instead of looking at issues closer to home, you blame Sky and the Prenjer League lol. Plenty of small nations that produce great players despite not having much money. Croatia spring to mind. Scotland have produced ONE top class footballer in the last twenty years. Shocking.

The 'combined' English 'Firms' teamed up with the Rangers ICF to fight the T.Army, Hibs CCS, and Aberdeen casuals. They banned the annual meeting of the teams after this fixture.

That was certainly the story doing the rounds at the time. "England fans ran amok on Sauchiehall Street" etc... But looking at the footage of the game, you're lucky if there's what 1500-2000 England fans in total there. So with 30 odd years of hindsight, I think this story may have been exaggerated by the tabloid press at the time. I think the real reason for scrapping the home internationals was the ever congested & expanding football calendar and it just got harder and harder to fit in what were effectively meaningless games.

Mantis Toboggan MD I think they were just looking to new horizons and wanted the England team to compete in the Euros and World Cup and to play in a way which would lead to success. Evidently this didn’t transpire! I’d like them to go back and revive this fixture in the future with the British Championships, even dust off the Rouss Cup.
