Scoring with Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra
A first look at Spitfire Audio’s BBC Symphony Orchestra library. Join composer Guy Michelmore as we unbox, and explore the library while writing a short piece of music. I'm not paid to review or promote this software. I get a review copy and I only review software I like.

@@abstractdaddy dude did you get this VST? I'm about to install it, it's going to change the game for me! Also do you score music outside of your Interface-themed stuff?
@abstractdaddy
3 жыл бұрын
@@attentionlabel I didn't get this one, I have Cinestrings Core which was cheaper, but also is only strings. But this BBC one sounds fantastic and includes a bunch of other instruments, I'm sure you'll make it sound amazing. I took a peak at your channel and your stuff sounds really well mixed. I do have Spitfire Solo Strings too, though more recently, if I can afford it, I've been hiring session musicians to record a solo. For me it makes a big difference for a lead, but for ensembles I think VSTs do the job just fine. Also who has money to hire an orchestra? Apart from my regular albums I haven't had the opportunity to score something other than Interface, but maybe one day who knows!

@@abstractdaddy Thank you sir, I'm touched to get Umami's support! Haha I think you're totally right about lead vs ensemble. VSTs are great until you need a really organic, expressive lead. If you ever need another studio producer, just holler. Also we exchanged last year when I mailed ya asking for an interview, you respectfully declined but I still wanna ask you the juicy questions about your creativity and workflow so if you ever change your mind I would absolutely love to interview you!

Up in the galery waaay above the orchestra!
As a composer who has only ever used notation software like Sibelius (and accompanying playback sounds), this video has definitely broadened my perspective of what software is out there to create much more realistic orchestral pieces! I mean, I only recently figured out my keyboard had MIDI and my mind BLEW when I connected it to Garageband and I could use the Sound Library in there! Definitely going to be saving up for this one and Cubase, maybe!
Everything in this video, from the dudes enthusiasm, his talent, all the way to a cardboard cut out of Hanz Zimmer is amazing.
You're really the best, funniest, most talented composer on youtube... I've been following so many music theory and producers channels and no one can be compared to you. JUST KEEP DOING AND SHARING YOUR BRILLIANT WORK. We thank you

Oh my god. When the camera focused and panned to Hans at the end. Priceless! What a fun video! I can’t wait to get my SSD. I’m struggling with a straight hard drive at the moment. Gah!
Discovered your channel a few days ago (this is the second video I have watched) and I couldn't be happier that I somehow found my way here. I could easily write at length about all the things that make your channel so outstanding, but the point I most want to get across is that I find it deeply inspirational. Thank you for teaching us, and being so entertaining at the same time. Cheers from Toronto!
I very much appreciate the sense of humor and joy you bring to your composing videos. The slow push into Hans at the end when your camera focused on the background was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time...fantastic embrace of the happy accident. Cheers
that was a beautiful piece of music and you made it look so easy. Ive been making music for over 20 years and your talent blows me away.
Watching you always is a joy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the library!
I love your enthusiasm and evidently genuine excitement! You are simply stunning and forever inspired, yet so utterly casual. Thank you Guy!
I shouldn't say this but I was so happy to see you make the same mistake as myself by writing something in 3/4 when the DAW is set to 4/4 . I do it quite often and get really annoyed when things don't sound quite right and sit for ages trying to work out the problem. Normal thing is to blame my greenness with a keyboard etc. Highly entertaining and informative video, keep up the great work.
Watching you compose this short piece only to demo this fantastic library was one of the best musical experiences in my life, honestly! Also, what a great personality you have! Subscribed!

I love it.. and I love the enthusiasm you have for what you do..... please keep making the videos to let me see a window into your musical world....lastly..where on this earth would I get that BBC orchestra set of sounds... I have been on lock down with this terrible Corona virus outbreak and need desperately to have something to keep me going for the next 12 weeks!....yes 12 weeks... thank you so much...let’s hope the music will save us!

Fantastic as usual..love those videos when you compose music to picture, can you make more of those, please..been a huge a fan of this channel
You have a great talent to quickly write a nice piece of music and the library sounds awesome. Fantastic combinaison of the two.
As soon as you brought the French Horn in at 24:40 Guy, all I could think about was Raiders of the Lost Ark! :-) The sound of these samples is amazing.
Coming from a jazz musician's perspective to the world of orchestral music, I've found it daunting trying to figure out how best to utilize this library. I find your compositional process very inspiring, and I'm thriving on the dad composer energy in this video. Great work!
thanks guy, really enjoyed your enthusiasm and fun approach to exploring the sounds! I'm thinking of getting this as a first library as a current composition student. Seems to be the goods from what I've heard so far
Loving this channel! Just learned about it last week and there's so much good stuff here!
I've just caught on to your channel, and I must say, you have probably been the most engaging for me to actually comment in the comments instead of just clicking onto the next plethora of youtube clips :D - thank you for the educational aspects of orchestral library plugins.
I love the spontaneity of your work. Something to aspire to!
Just found this channel. It's great to see musical passion personified! Can I also remind people that Spitfire do a FREE series of VSTi in their LABS series? They are a bit quirky but the quality is superb (they seem to lavish care on whatever they do) and they are highly usable in many contexts.

I really enjoy these videos. I don't leave comments often, but this channel is so great and so unique!
It's been said already in the comments, but the enthusiasm here really IS infectious! I love it! I just got the Spitfire Audio Symphony Orchestra library and am loving it as well! So much so that I'm considering consolidating my library collection since a lot of the previous libraries I worked with are becoming redundant thanks to the quality and versatility of this one.

This new VST is fantastic (I picked it up as well)! But even better? YOU! Thank you for the excitement, passion AND the education and I'm glad I have found the channel as a fellow composer! Cheers!
Like a kid in a candy store 😃 I loved the orchestra tuning when you brought it up to your ear! Great idea :) Great video !
16:11 I literally have no idea how I have watched so many of your videos without subscribing!! 😱 Subscribed, sir!
I have been watching all of the videos from Christian.s blogs - I so want this piece of kit. Aside from film scoring, you could really put together a payable version of a composition. The sound of those French horns was amazing!
great video, especially helpful because you show us how it sounds out of the box. Most of the times the samples are already tweaked before they use them in songs, so I don't know how long it takes to get the samples to sound good. Now I hear the quality of the sounds in the way I would use them 90% of the time. I'm just doing this as a hobby, and rather use my time making music than going thru endless sessions of twitching and equalizing. This sounds great, thanks
Well you sold me! I’ve never even considered scoring or producing as a possible career until I started watching you! Thank you!!!
I love everything single thing about this video soo much!! I just subscribed and I will be buying this asap 🙌 (your personality is amazing as well) 😅 I will definitely stay tuned!
Well the glow Sunday and the staccato in room tone and Mike positions, just floors me, and I'm not talking noise floor!
I love your energy and enthusiasm, great video
Thank you for this fun and inspiring initial demo of Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra library. Now I want to spend all of my money on it (and a Hans Zimmer cut out for my room)
Guy, this sounds like an end-credit piece. Wonderful stuff.
That was fun - thanks, Guy! I use a lot of Spitfire stuff for my media composing. Just got this.
Absolutely love this channel. I'm always the odd duckling because I listen to orchestral music like Hans Zimmer all the time in the car and when I'm just doing whatever. I signed up at the site and will wait the 14 days to get the samples for free then have a blast playing around. My Launchkey MK3 comes in a couple of days from now and I can't wait to get started. I would be excited to see what you could do with some of the free labs from Spitfire like the moon guitar or something. Best of wishes to you mate.
this is just too good to watch :D very inspiring and fun video, many thanks for that!!!!
My god, this is really impressive. Didn't realize how good some symphonic sample libraries were. Forget despairing that I'll never have an orchestra at my disposal.

Guy, I love your style! I would have loved to have you as my personal music coach! Core is tempting, but I'm on a budget, so I'll stick with Discover. Now, what about a full musical composition using "only" BBC Discover? That should show the full extent (and limits) of it, and perhaps a teaser to move along further to the Core one, who knows! Keep up your vibrant and communicative enthusiasm.... the world needs people like you! 😁
