SCOPE volunteers help spot handicap parking violators
You might want to think twice the next time you're in a hurry and consider using that handicapped parking space near the front of the store. Washington State has nearly doubled the fine for illegally using a handicapped parking spot. KXLY4's Jeff Humphrey reports.

I'm handicap. Went to a local store to pick up a few things for my dinner. There was a handicap space open near the front door but when I went to park there a woman driving a new Cady," I drive a 15 year old truck" had gotten there first. She clearly was not handicap and didn't have the proper placards. I saw her inside the store and I asked her why she parked there? Her words were, "Who are you? A cop? It ain't against the law if you don't get caught. You're just jealous of the car I drive".
I also think the fine should be a minimum of $1000. 00 first offense. Second offense, automatic tow and impound! The hang tags should have a photo of the person it was issued to, also.
I would like it see them loose there license for 1 year and points taken plus fine

Any parking ticket is a non moving violation, and carries no points.
New fines for California 2011 VC 22507(A) $976 Violation of disabled parking provisions, first offense. VC 22507(B) $1876 Violation of disabled parking provisions, > second offense.
So, they just sit at home and starve, and do without the things you take for granted? We isolate them, so you don't have to look at them?
Perhaps it is because the sign applies to the space it faces - so you can clearly read the sign when you drive in?
But what if your handicap is having your spinal cord severed by shrapnel whilst serving your country? It's what happened to my father who is now elderly & hasn't been able to walk for 60 years. Are you saying that as soon as he retired, he should've given up his adapted vehicle?
Smartphone APP, called "Parking Mobility" lets you report those parking illegally and in some cities this will become a mailed ticket sent to the violators.

Fuzzy Hamster. And how does the ordinary person know that they should not be using one?

@@lovemuffin1963 the large blue painted symbol and the sign might give a clue that one ought to consider that the space might not be for them.
It's nonsense the police are too busy to deal with this. The potential fines possible would pay the FT pay for one cop to do nothing, but write tickets for this in most medium size cities. It is axiomatic that anything important gets the required resources. Therefore, it's not considered important enough. The problem might be that funds coming from tickets do not make it to the local police...so no real incentive.
In part, this issue is because most city agencies do not do their job enforcing the laws protecting the disabled, no priority is assigned to correct or enforce the law. Large fines, towing, these actions can make money to pay for enforcement. If tickets were made payable when people get their car sticker, people would have no choice but to pay or no sticker, and another ticket and fine. It can be a real legitimate moneymaker for a city and protect the innocent.
Automatically Towed Should Work...
dodge truck @ 1:00 dosent have a sign and the officer does nothing..

You don't need a placard if you have a permanent plate! I have people all the time telling me I am illegally parking because I don't have a placard, I tell them I don't need one, they tell me they will call the cops, and I tell them to please do, then I walk away. I love it when the cops show up and they ask what the problem is, the person shows them no placard, and the cops say he has a permanent plate!!
There's a douche bag who works out at my gym who is in excellent shape and clearly not handicapped. He has a handicap placard which more than likely belongs to someone else. Not only does he park in the same handicap spot each time. He also parks sideways so that you cannot park in the spots on either side of him.

He isn't an employee
some of the women who misuse the placard's are weighing in at 300 pisses me off lazy blobs is bad but to steal from peolpe who need them when you really need to walk its disgusting
it does nothing if they don't enforce it
How much strength do you require for someone to drive? What testing procedure will you use? Is an intoxicated person any more likely to cause an accident than someone with a bad knee? Is there reaction time the same? Are you really comparing the two?
I see a lot of them at homedepot and barns and noble at vons. In Torrance
What piss you off is seeing someone that is not getting paid to do that when you see the police sitting in a donut shop getting paid to
Your story doesn't sound plausible because most people who know they are scamming will do everything to avoid confrontation. The excuse is often; "I'm picking up someone who is handicapped." They usually don't get snarkey with you because they know you can turn their plate number in to the police.
Make it tough on the violators, much more gentle on the handicapped. Seize the car. Wait 30 days to make sure there was no legal reason, then auction the car off. Use the proceeds to hire more enforcement officers. Steal a parking spot from the disadvantaged, pay the price!
I have a 100 proof way of making people move their car out of a handicap space.Tell that person that when they go into the store, your going to key their car all across their beautiful paint job where Macco can't even fix it ! And just stand there next to their car daring them to go into the store.TRUST ME,They WILL move their car. What are they going to do ? Call the Police ?

no. better to phone it in and have the proper agency or authority tow the car. Let them experience being inconvenienced, and then a fine and maybe points against their license

Actually a handicapped person can operate a vehicle.

I drive an adapted van from my wheelchair. It has an automatic ramp and door. I use hand controls. I’ve been a handicapped driver for 18 years.
No, they get someone else to drive themor take a cab or one of the senior surry shuttles. We don't allow drunk drivers on the road, so why allow handicapped people with reduced reactionary time or strength to be able to control a vehicle?

If you are elderly and considered "handicapped," then you have no business driving an automobile.
