Scooter Tramp Scotty. Blown Motor Pt-1.

This is actually somewhat of a tech video. Along with the unorthodox story, it covers front motor-mount bolts consistently breaking and motor alignment.
My book, Josie’s Journey. Josie’s is a not a motorcycle book, but instead the rather rough story of one man’s journey to freedom.

I had the same problem. I broke about ten going to Sturgis and back this summer from Mass. I've been changing out all the rubber stuff on a low mile 98 Roadking I got recently. Not because it's all failing. Just because it's all 25 year old rubber now. I put a USA made D&S Performance heavy duty mount in there, checked the alignment and off I went. I broke one bolt about every day. Grade 8, grade 5, they all broke.... What I finally figured out was, changing these on the side of the road with open end wrenches, I wasnt getting them fuckers tight enough. I did take the really stiff heavy duty mount out and put in the HD "improved" one (made in China and at a stupid price). I then torqued the shit out of the bolts and havnt had a problem since. It was some aggravating on the road I tell ya as you know. I also got a set of OEM bolts off of ebay. I'm sure the Tractor Supply bolts I was getting on the road were cheap-ass Chinese shit also. Grade 8 bolts are strong as hell but they don't stand much vibration if they aint tight.... I'll be interested to see if your fix works ass well

Grade 8s broke like crazy for me. Factory uses 5s. The real problem, which i failed to film, was that the original bolts got loose and wabbled out the inside of the holes in the front of the motor - BAD! Hence the jump to the next size up bolts.

When I did my 93 which was built from reck. I used A string , I would have the string touch the front and the rear of the tire rear and also the same for the front tire have a touch the front and the rear of the tire.. equally the tough part is if your rear tire is wider than your front then you got to kind of figure out the difference..

I align them the same way at my shop. I use a manual style protractor on the rotors instead of the electronic ones & I have 2- 8' x 2'' 3/16" steel flat stock that I prop up on 4x4s to get them off the ground. I do it on the lift after unbolting the front wheel clamp off the lift & out of the way. I like the light bulb idea. I think you're right about Eric Beull designing the rubber mount set up. I knew a guy that said he met him at his home & he told him that he designed the FXR & that it's supposed to put all the weight on the back wheel on take off.

Sorry to hear the motor might be on its way out. On the alignment, I have used a long piece of string looped around the rear wheel, and both ends tied on jackstands close to each other in front of the front tire. The idea is that the string just kisses the outer peak of the tires, front and back. If it's off, it will be laying across one side of a tire. Good stuff!

Florescent light bulbs? I've heard of that somewhere else before... Seems like the trick is holding the front wheel straight, and then looking for a gap between the front tire and the bulbs. The gap could be between the buld and tire at the left front, left rear, or at the right front, right rear. When theres no gap between the bulbs and the tires, at the front and rear tires then the bike is in straight alignment... That's why it took three guys to do it. I'm still not sure how it works, I'd like to see a mechanic do this set-up.

They ain’t half ‘imagining’. Been doing it that way since mid 60’s. B UT you lay a house brick across the back off the rear wheel and same at front of front wheel . Lay the guides on these . Normally the back tyre is wider than the front ,so, layer against both sides of the rear wheel you check along the sides of the front wheel. You are looking for the gap between the guides and the front tyre to be the same on each side (rear tyre wider remember).

you probably discovered you need swin arm bushing too. you may even want to check rear wheel bearings." It's a demonstration boob" ha ha but aren't they all?

@scottykerekes2471 yeah thats where they went wrong with the twincam and m8 ,( not wheel bearings) but pressing the fly wheels together and using straight roller bearing for mains. when I've got to get into the bottom end ill do the Timken conversion. sorry about the bad news but it looks like your on the right spot for it to happen.

Its actually a motor outta my old bike. Good motor. I believe it was a bad lifter wheel that took it out. Itll all be in the next video.

So you said that they don’t make that plate anymore, can you use one from a FXR? There are several aftermarket companies making them for a FXR.

Hi,Scotty i think your front motor mount is in upside down. The hourglass shaped side is supposed to face down. Dont know that would make if would make a difference though. Being this is a high mile bike I would definitely change your links,if you can afford it i would replace your swing arm rubbers as well Good luck, buddy

I’d drill the motor and put steel sleeves in where it was wallered out and use grade 8 bolts. Or better yet use titanium bolts. You won’t break them.
