Scoliosis VLOG #1 | Surgery #4

Surgery date December 18, 2019. This is vlog part 1 of 2. I had a disc and rib removed and a spacer put it in at L2. A vertebrae was fractured and I had screw lucency in the thoracic area of the spine. Larger screws were put in place since it was the 4th time opening me up. I have nylon stitches due to my high risk of infection and will get them taken out at my 3 week post-op appointment. I have a side and back incision (T3-L3) and had a drain after surgery for the first time.

Ladies, I am 66 going on 67. I had a Harrington rod in 1973 from t-2 to t-12. I wore a hugh body cast for a year. Times are better now, no cast, lol. I had a revision surgery at age 60 to straighten a curve that began in my lower spine in my 50’s. Ugh, not what I wanted as muscle pain. I hated the need to hide that curve as a clothes horse and love looking fine. I was happy to have the revision. It took 2 yrs. To locate a doctor experienced enough that would attempt. Don’t be afraid. You will heal fast and get on with life. My first surgery served me well with no restrictions for so many years as an athlete until old age hit.

Congratulations Sarah! I am 56 years. I had severe scoliosis over 95 degrees. I had my first surgery in July 2020. it was fused from T1 to the pelvis. My surgeon and anesthesiologist did a miracle. I am always thankful to them. I had to use a walker during the first 3 months. I had my second surgery in April 2024. I am still recovering. Before the surgery, my lungs were contracted, and experienced difficulty in breathing. Now it is resolved. Due to severe curvature, I had a big problem with bowel movement and it is almost ok. Good luck to all those who are waiting for surgeries.

The face swelling is common when you have had spinal surgery because you have spent a lot of time on your stomach face down.

This brought back so many memories. I had 8 spinal surgeries, 5 major ones and 3 smaller ones. I was diagnosed with idiopathic childhood scoliosis when I was six years old. Until I was 13 I was wearing different braces and had a cast bed overnight. I went 2-3 times weekly to PT. With 13 my lungs were severely inflicted by my curvature and also my heart started acting up because of the space difficulties in my thorax. So I faced my first spinal fusion. That was in 1989, the technique wasn't as good then today so following surgeries were unavoidable. I had several rib resections and spinal osteotomies. My 7th surgery was the most difficult of all, the surgery it self took 14 hours and I lost a lot of blood and although they used a cellsaver during the surgery I required multiple blood transfusions. Post operative I had several complications such as an ileus and pneumonia. I almost ended up back in the OR for a laparotomy because of the ileus. Fortunately I managed it to go through with conservative treatment. I was in immense pain from my back and belly and my lungs. My lungs were filled with fluid, I had major hematothorax and that resulted in pneumonia. I had 4 large thoracic drains and a nasaogastric tube which I tolarated very poorly. I was on extreme high dosage of IV narcotics. 6 ribs were resected and my vertebrae was cut on 3 places, so called osteotomias to be able to mobilize the already fused spinal column. Now I'm 43 years old and I went through a ton of spinal infiltrations, ablations and more for pain therapy. Soon I will get a spinal cord stimulator implanted to help me with my lower back pain. I have 2 beautiful children, where it turned out with the first pregnancy that I have irregular blood antibodies which can be very dangerous in pregnancy for the baby. I acquired them through the multiple blood transfusions through out the 8 spinal surgeries. My babies were closely monitored by ultrasound during my pregnancies. One of this antibodies is known to cause issues with building red blood cells in the developing baby intrauterine. If it would have effected them they would have been transfused intrauterine. My girl was born prematurely at 32 weeks and required immediate blood transfusion. My boy was born only 3 weeks early and was doing fine. So all this scoliosis story did affect almost my whole life and still does. I wish you the best and you are a beautiful strong young lady. 💖

Thank you for sharing your story with me! You are so strong for going through all of that and continuing to push through! I haven’t heard of a spinal cord stimulator, I hope it works for your pain! The ups and downs from scoliosis never end. I’m glad your children were born without too many complications. I always say I won’t have children because I’m afraid of the price I’ll pay while carrying and I’m afraid of my child passing on my medical issues. Stay strong! Good luck to you and your family 💞 Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

I too have scoliosis, but I spent 4 and a half years in a back brace. I still have problems. But I did 4 years of figure skating and ballet. I did adult gymnastics for a several months. Im glad I didnt have surgery though when they found it my spine was crashing my heart and the doctor suggested surgery. This back in the 80's and surgery has come a long way since then. My cousin also had scoliosis and went through surgery she only had the one.

Remember your BLTs! No bending, lifting, or twisting. But I’m sure you heard that from your doctors 😊. As long as you adhere to those, I don’t think you can really mess up the recovery. Focus on your nutrition, more vitamin C, D, fiber, protein. Walk around your house daily, just get those muscles moving. I know you’re afraid of messing up the recovery, but I think it’s actually hard to do that! The implants (rods and screws) are sure to be pretty secure if you have a good surgeon. Just don’t lift more than 5-10 pounds and try not to bend or twist your body until you’re given the ok to do so. Sleeping was rough for me for about 4-6 months until my muscles loosened up. I’m a side sleeper, sleeping on my back actually gives me stomach problems since this last surgery, so that’s where I really struggled. I couldn’t get into my comfy sleeping position without twisting my body and my hips were sore from being on the operating table. You asked a great question and I hope your recovery goes up from here! It takes awhile, but your muscles will loosen up and you’ll feel pretty normal. Hang in there ❤️ thank you so much for your kind words! I make the vids bc I know how hard it was for me and I’m so happy I can help others!

@@SarahJohnsonScoliosis Thank you! Yeah and the iodine like dried my nose hairs so it felts super odd, I wanted to rub off the excess stuff lol. I have to admit I totally expected my scoliosis fusion surgery to be way harder then my tethered cord one but for me it was the other way around. I actually was your age, 20 when I had my fusion and we later found out that my scoliosis (I had a rare left thoracic curve and I have a rare connective tissue disorder) but yeah my scoliosis was caused by my tethered cord that I was born with. I had symptoms since birth but everyone missed it. I guess because it is rare. If anything I learned from this past surgery it is that incision size does not mean that you will have more or less pain based on the size of it, it really depends on how deep they cut. My scoliosis scar is about 12 inches and my tethered cord scar starts right under it and is about 4 to 5 inches. I had a laminectomy with the dether and so I guess they had to cut some bone to go down to the spinal cord too. Everyone is different of course with pain and I remember the fusion surgery being very brutal as well! You are an inspiration, I just found your channel but I have watched all of your vlogs (even if I didn't comment on them all lol) You have been through a lot too. Breaking rods is not fun! I hope that never happens again for you and that you keep healing well! Much love! I actually filmed part of my scoliosis surgery journey but lost the footage so couldn't make a video :( That was in 2012. I also was not as funny as you, I was pretty cranky and didn't really like having my parents film even though I told them to haha.

I never thought about how deep they had to cut before! My scar goes down pretty far since I’m fused T3-L3. Gosh you’ve been through a lot. I’m glad the fusion surgery wasn’t as painful as the tethered for you. For me the scoliosis is genetic on my moms side. I wanted to document my journey so I could help others, I’m sorry your footage was lost. I love watching other people’s experiences. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your story with me!

You're story is so similar to mine . I've had 7 major spine surgeries for scheurmanns kyphosis and scoliosis. I had allergy to the hardware, a infection, then my spine broke at L1 and L3 almost severing my spinal cord ! My pain was also severe . After my surgeries I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which they now believe was the cause of my curvature. My curvature was 90 degrees . Good luck to you on this journey . If you have other issues such as joints that are flex able ,joint pain , soft skin , incisions that have trouble healing or reopening ,GI issues , allergy issues ( EDS goes along with mast cell Activation Syndrome this is what caused me to have a allergy to my spinal hardware ) and if you have a fast heart rate and low blood pressure this is due to postorial tachycardia Syndrome which also goes along with EDS you may want to look into EDS hypermobile type if they havent been able to find the cause to your curvature and spine breaking ! God Bless . I'm hesitant to tell people stuff like this cause I dont want to overwhelm them cause I know it can be but your story is so similar to mine I felt led to tell you ! I wish someone wouldve told me . I became sick after my surgeries and the Drs couldnt figure it out . I had to be stitched inside and out with nylon stitches due to my incision opening up due to the fragile skin from EDS , I struggled with high heart rate and fatigue and allergy to the hardware . My Drs searched and searched and then finally my Dr sent me to see a genetic Dr and a heart Dr and I was then diagnosed with EDS which is what caused my spinal curve then POTS which is what causes my high heart rate and svt and then I was diagnosed with MCAS which is what has caused my severe allergies even to my hardware . It took me 10 years to finally get my diagnosis. My Dr never gave up on me and I'm so thankful. I dont want anybody else to experience the long wait I did for a diagnosis so that's why I felt compelled to just make you aware . I watched all your videos and it literally felt like I was watching my story ! I have a video on my channel about my journey. If you ever want to chat I'd love to email you . If you're interested just comment and let me know and I'll give you my email . Sorry hope I didnt overwhelm you . Ps I'm fused from T1 to L3 ♡

Thank you so much for sharing your story! The doctors have always thought that they were missing something. EDS was discussed, but they don’t think I have it and POTS was discussed, but they dont think I have that either. They did a short test such as standing up and laying down, but at that time I didnt have symptoms. Any cut ive ever had had trouble healing and I always have to be put on antibiotics for wounds that should be able to heal. My mom is always researching and when this virus is all over we want to seek out an EP, which was recommended to go to from my Primary doctor. My scoliosis is genetic; my mom, her brother, and her mom has it. I also have hemochromatosis, PCOS, and hashimotos disease. My mom would love to talk to you about this stuff if I can get your email or you can email me (scolisarahjohnson@gmail.com). We thought I have an allergy to the rods and screws, but it’s so hard to get tested and it’s expensive. None of my doctors know how I could get tested either. It’s been a struggle going to all these specialists and leaving with no answers. No one knows why I have that ticking sound when my heart rate is up. It sounds like someone left their watch inside me! Haha. Thanks so much for watching and I look forward to communicating with you!!

Yes, its an IV. Typically they will put a couple in to give you medicine and fluids. They put one in while I was awake and then the other in while I was asleep! They numbed the area before putting it in my hand, so I didn’t feel it 😄. Didn’t hurt when they took it out, but all of the IVs bothered me in the hospital and I bruised pretty badly after them. They’re just annoying! Good luck and dont hesitate to ask me any questions while you’re recovering 😊

Thanks so much for posting this, girl! Very informative. I'm actually getting surgery soon, too. I am wondering if you could explain more about what it was like to get put to sleep? This is the part that freaks me out!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!

This time I was put to sleep they did it through my IV. All the previous times I’ve been put to sleep, it was through a gas mask sort of thing where I breathed in the anesthesia. If you have the mask, they will put it on you and then you just breathe in and it is a gradual sleepiness that comes over you. Very quick though! You can’t fight it haha. This time with the IV they just gave me oxygen to breathe in and then told me “putting the anesthesia through the IV now” and then by the time I started counting to 3, I was asleep! Its impossible to fight, and is easier if you just remain calm and let it put you to sleep. When you wake up you might be confused. I wasn’t, but I know people that say sometimes they are a little out of it and don’t remember much about waking up. I remembered everything and complained about having the worst dry mouth haha. They put a breathing tube in, so you might have a dry throat as well. Hopefully you will have good meds and don’t wake up in pain (: . Good luck!! Let me know if you have anymore questions

You should probably consult a doctor, but after my previous surgeries at one year post op I went on amusement park rides and it didn’t hurt my back. I was cleared to go on them by my doctor, but I avoided the roller coasters that would have sharp turns and jerk movements and avoided the wooden ones. But otherwise, I went on all the rides I wanted to!

  • @SarahJohnsonScoliosis

    @SarahJohnsonScoliosis

    8 ай бұрын

If I press on my spine from the outside I can feel “bumps” that are the screws. Depending on how thin you are will determine if you can see the bumps. If you look at my spine while I wrap my arms around myself, you would be able to see the screws a bit due to my skin stretching and therefore thinning. Some seats are uncomfortable since my back doesn’t bend to conform to the structure of the chair. Hugs typically do not bother me! Sometimes, if someone pats me on the back it feels strange, since most of my back is numb to the touch.

Make sure to not eat the morning of surgery and around the late night so eat a good lunch and drink a lot of water the day before .If we are still in quarantine when you have it you might only be able to have one parent with you and sadly no visitors.but just don’t be scared. Make sure to get up and walk for 10-15 mins every hour or 2 (as long as you feel up to it) so your muscles can get used to doing some activity again. All your muscles in your back were just sliced through so it’s going to take some time for them to readjust. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C (for the skin) and vitamin D and A (for the bones). Higher protein as well. Everyday might be different as far as your progress and there might be days you feel like you’re going backwards but it just takes a lot of time to feel “normal” again. Remember your restrictions and just take it easy! I hope any of that helps. Good luck

It’s ok to be scared! Trust your team of doctors, they have your back (literally lol). You should be asleep when they put most of the IVs in, you might be awake when they put one in your hand or arm. If you’ve gotten blood taken before, it’s a similar feeling to that. The doctor should numb you before they put the IV in and you can ask them to numb you as well.

I have updated videos so I’d suggest checking those out! But, I’m back to lifting weights in the gym I just don’t do things that would put a lot of pressure on my lower discs, like squats. I listen to my body and if something feels weird or hurts, I don’t do it. My back obviously can’t bend so there’s limitations there, but you find new ways of doing things. I just keep in mind not to do activities that put pressure above or below my fusion bc i know the discs can start to deteriorate. so for example, I don’t jump on trampolines anymore and I don’t run long distances. I can physically do those things, but I choose not to to preserve the quality of my spine! Hope your recovery is going well!! 😁

I remember everything but thats not the case for everyone. Most people are groggy and sleepy from the pain meds so they have a scattered memory of waking up. You don’t have to worry about the stitches opening up! It does hurt a bit but just move very slowly and stay on top of your pain med schedule (tell them you want them around the clock).

I've posted new videos! I still have yet to make an official 6 months post op video, but I've posted a few work outs. I'm doing pretty well, not too much pain. Some days are better than others but overall I'm doing well. There's so much information I could give. Just know that it's okay to be scared and recovery is going to be difficult, but in a few months you'll feel so much better and maybe you'll even forget about all the post-surgery pain. In the hospital you should be receiving meds around the clock once they give you oral meds. If you need more meds they can give you some through your IV (don't be afraid to ask- don't suffer in pain). Make sure to have a good constipation medicine as you will be constipated for a few weeks. I recommend a "smooth move" tea. You're going to feel tight in your back for a while and I had this tightness wrap around to my chest, so if you have chest pain it could just be from the tightness in your back. Remind yourself to relax your shoulders frequently. Another tip is to try to walk around your house every 2-3 hours once you're home from surgery. I know you won't want to but walking really helps loosen everything up and it will help the recovery process (it also helps get your digestion moving). You might not have an appetite for a while (I always lose weight after surgery) but it's important to keep your protein intake up as well as your calcium and vitamin D intake. Lastly, be patient!! Don't push yourself too soon. It takes at least a year for the fusion to be solid and you might have to learn how to do certain things a different way than you previously did. But that's OKAY! You got this, stay in contact with your doctors and don't be afraid to ask questions. You can email me whenever at scolisarahjohnson@gmail.com or comment on my vids again. Best of luck to you

I’m fused T3-L3, and still have 30ish degree curve but I basically had to because my lungs and ribs might have had issues if my curve continued to worsen. This channel is all about my journey so you can always check out some of my other vids! Each surgery for me had a slightly different recovery but each time I was stiff for at least 3 months. Everyday was different, and sometimes it felt like I was going backwards but eventually you’ll feel back to “normal”. They get you up and walking the day after surgery and I would say it felt pretty good after a few weeks of walking every day. • @SarahJohnsonScoliosis

I hope this will be the last surgery I have for awhile. I might have to get another when I’m old but it just depends on how the discs below my fusion hold up. I had several because each time my body failed to fuse. I had the first to correct my curve but then I was having pain and found out screws at the top were pulling out, so my surgeon went in and fixed that part. He didn’t open me all the way up he only opened me at the top to fix the screws and the bottom ended up not fusing correctly either so eventually both of my rods broke. I got new rods which makes surgery #3 and then I was having pain at the bottom basically since i was recovering from that one and found out a year later that I had a fractured vertebrae. Which brings us to this most recent surgery #4. There wasn’t anything I could do about my body not wanting to fuse to the hardware. My best advice would just to take the recovery really slow, even if you feel better remember not to bend lift or twist for 6 months and after that be very careful. The only thing I really shouldn’t do (even though I can) is run. The pounding can hurt the discs below your fusion. But I’m doing really well as of right now!

For the shower: if your shower or bath is big enough id suggest getting a chair or a suction cup handle so you have something to hold on to when you get out. Showering was always exhausting for me and my mom helped me for awhile. You’ll also be on meds so someone should be in the bathroom with you if you are able to shower by yourself. For the bed: lots of pillows! Big ones, small ones, flatter ones, thick ones! I used a lot of pillows behind my back when i slept on my sides. I also had a small stool to help me get into bed. So if you have a higher bed you might want to get a stool. Food: You’re going to get constipated so I’d recommend getting stool softeners or the tea I used “smooth move tea”. Keep up with your protein, calcium, fiber, and antioxidant intake. I also had a hard time sleeping and would often be hungry if I randomly woke up and couldn’t go back to bed so I kept a granola bar or protein bar by my bedside. Speaking of a hard time sleeping, I also got 5mg and 10mg melatonin tablets from the grocery store and I took them at night to help me fall asleep. That’s all I can think of right now!

Hi how did you go though 4 back operations for your scoliosis? My sister only had 1 spine fusion? I myself have Scoliosis and it's not easy not going to do surgery yet but I'm in pain management to help with the chronic pain that it causes me. I have other health issues as well on top of Scoliosis so fusion isn't in the cards for along time

My other three surgeries were failures. The rods did not fuse properly to my spine which made the screws pull out and my rods broke as well.

It depends on how much work they have to do once they see your spine. You will have pain medicine so that will help. The worst thing for me was how tight my back muscles were. It made even breathing difficult, but everyone is different! Good luck ♥️

I made different kind of surgery last August, it's called unfusion it's new but you could read about it, its basically Medical telescope so they don't have to open the hole back, in this way you are getting better quickly and you'll get back to your normal life easier.

And on some appointments my doctor told me things like my weight limit is now at a 20 so I can now carry 20 pound things and nothing more.
