Scoliosis Treatment in Adults

Ready for a consultation or want more information? You can contact us here:
www.scoliosisreductioncenter....
When thinking of scoliosis, we usually consider children; however, the majority of scoliosis cases present themselves in adults. The older the age group, the greater amount of patients who have scoliosis.
Scoliosis is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 10-18. It is called adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
There are different types of scoliosis. The most common is idiopathic scoliosis, and it has no apparent causation factor. It seems to be a multifactorial problem.
There are cases where the cause can be determined, such as neuromuscular scoliosis. When the patient has a larger neuromuscular condition, it can lead to scoliosis developing.
Congenital scoliosis develops in utero as a result of a bone malformation that can occur during development. It affects the spine itself as one of the bones, instead of being a rectangle, becomes abnormally shaped and is called a hemi-vertebrae. They can be singular, fused, or malformed, which leads to congenital scoliosis as the bones are not regularly shaped.
Degenerative scoliosis is caused by age-related deterioration of the spine. Some people consider this to be part of the natural aging process. This seems incorrect since not all people that age have scoliosis. It is most commonly diagnosed around 50 years of age and found in an x-ray.
Which Are The Main Two That Affect Adults?
Adult idiopathic scoliosis is, in a way, an extension of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis that could have been either undiagnosed until the adult age when it is progressing, or it could be patients who did have adolescent idiopathic scoliosis but left it untreated.
Every adolescent case eventually becomes an adult case. About 90 percent of adolescents are diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis; it is the largest category of diagnosis.
Degenerative Scoliosis is the second most common. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis left untreated will lead to degenerative findings in the spine as that is a misalignment. Degenerative scoliosis and adult idiopathic scoliosis may look similar in later stages of life. At around 60 years of age, you may see deterioration in both areas, and it becomes hard to distinguish without clear findings.
The main symptom of adult scoliosis is simply pain, which is normally what brings on scoliosis treatment in the adult stage. It usually starts to preset pain at around 40 years of age, and it normally happens because the spine is compressing over time and it causes localized back pain.
Left untreated, scoliosis can affect the entire biomechanical system of the body and nerve function since all the nerves of the body go through the spine.
The goal of treatment in adult patients should be curve reduction, and we should be reducing adult curves; however, most patients are told not to worry about it, as when it becomes severe enough or unmanageable spinal surgery should be considered.
Most adolescents are still told not to worry about it at this time. Even though we know, it will progress to the adult stage. We should try to stabilize the spine, not allow it to get worse, and improve spinal muscles for optimal support and reducing pain. Most adult patients, when they start feeling pain start by trying to manage the pain through medication and injection, so their pain is lessened, but their curve is getting worse, which just leaves the issue growing worse to be handled later down the line.
As common treatments for adult scoliosis multiple options are attempted, chiropractic, physical therapy, home exercises, physical trainers, orthopedic injections, and bracing, which may not be as effective because nothing is combining these treatments into a corrective approach.
Where most of these fail is that they are treated like they have a back injury. They get low-dose long, duration treatment which is how you rehabilitate an injury.
We prefer high dose short-duration care to get a rapid reduction in the scoliosis, and we use multiple methods to help stabilize the spine after we reduce it. In order to maintain spinal strength and function in the adult stage, which will reduce your pain and provide a better quality of life.

I'm 76 years old and have 35° scoliosis, degenerative disks, osteoporosis. I've been told all I can do is slow the progression, but not reduce the curve. Been getting pain med and some physical therapy, plus a brace that I can't wear while sitting because the Velcro pokes me. Physical therapy to end soon because Medicare only approves so many treatments.

I was diagnosed at age 7. Had a referral to the Scottish Rite by the age of 11 but my parents backed out. I'm an adult now and dealing with a ton of pain. Wish my parents had acted on it when I was young.

Thank you for this information. I live in Seattle Washington and I can’t find any scoliosis treatment centers in this area😂. I’m 59 and have an S curve 30 & 33 degrees. I wore a brace for 4 years in high school. I’ve had 2 bunion surgeries and a posterior tibial tendon surgery. I have flat feet. Currently my right hip flexor is in pain. It hurts when I sit too long. I do hot yoga 2 to 4 times a week for exercise and work full time. I’m scheduled for physical therapy next week for 6 weeks, twice a week. I don’t want to do any injections for pain. Do you have any other suggestions for me?

I hurt my spine in a serious accident in 1984. Now my neck is fused from C3 - T1. I can't handle anything pressing on the back of my neck & I've finally got a pillow that doesn't hurt so bad. I still usually wake every morning with a headache. I also have a fusion at L5 - S1. My curvature between my shoulders peeks at T7 & is I think 34 degrees. My curvature in my lumbar wasn't measured at that time, but it appears worse in the last xray I had for something else. I've had injections for the upper curve & it's helped in the past. I have a Spinal Stimulator that runs up pass the T7 vertebrae. Is there something I can do to try & stop the curving or even straighten it some? I live in Asheboro NC

I'm 79 years old. My spine has fused itself in 2 places of the s curve. What kind of doctor should I see? What therapy should I do and where in south east Michigan (Washington Township). A back doctor told me forget about it if I don't get surgery and gave me no recommendations. I stretch and do deep breathing. Would scroth therapy help me? I still work

Hi there just one question. I have a scoliotic spinal assymetry (thoracic spine 7.9 degrees and lumbar spine 9.32 degrees) I am 20 years old male. Can Schroth therapy reduce my curve and maybe bring it down to zero degrees or at least improve my posture to someone with a 0 degree spine?
