Scoliosis Exercises: Which Exercises are Bad for Scoliosis?

When diagnosed with scoliosis, patients often seek exercises that can be good for their scoliosis and ask about which can be bad for their condition. Every patient is unique, so when looking for exercises that might benefit a patient, the focus is on those scoliosis exercises that can increase flexibility, help improve the overall range of motion and reduce spinal rigidity.
Exercises that promote a healthy body help as well because the healthier the patient is, the more they will respond to treatment. We also want patients to have a healthy core, back, and spinal muscles.
Patients often ask if a general exercise can be done to reduce their scoliosis, but general exercises alone do not have the corrective potential for scoliosis patients.
Scoliosis exercises, specifically prescribed by a professional and tailored to the patient's curve size and type, will have a reductive impact on scoliosis. These work through motion, and have a great potential in managing and reducing scoliosis curves, but they are a part of treatment only.
The scoliosis specialist will work to make sure patients move in exact positions that will have a corrective effect on their scoliosis.
However, there are some exercises patients can do, non-compressive exercises, that will not harm their scoliosis like:
-Walking
-Cycling
-Swimming (certain techniques)
-Yoga
-Pilates
-Stretching
These exercises will help patients feel better because they improve their flexibility, but these are not directed to reduce a scoliotic curve.
In the same way, some exercises are not advised for scoliosis patients because these overuse one side of the body, they have a jarring motion, a compressive effect, collision or hyperextension of the spine, such as:
-Tennis
-Golf
-Bowling
-Horseback riding
-Gymnastics
-Football
-Dancing
And as we know, scoliosis can not be cured, but it can be improved, and these types of exercises increase the potential of a curve progressing or returning to where it was before treatment.
Since scoliosis is a progressive condition, the effort is always to manage it, and the smaller the curve, the easier it will be. Exercises are a component of the scoliosis management system, and they can be divided in two categories:
-General Exercises for health and fitness
-Scoliosis-Specific Exercises
Scoliosis-specific exercises will assist other treatments patients might be doing to manage their scoliosis, but exercise alone will not have a corrective potential, especially on larger curves over 25 degrees. When combined with physical therapy, rehab, and in-office treatment, scoliosis-specific exercises will have strong results and give patients a good outcome in stabilizing and reducing their curves.

Does exercise, specifically back exercises, increase your chances of better correction when it comes to getting spinal fusion surgery? Just want to know if the likelihood of better fusion is higher when you work out your back muscles leading up to the surgery?

Mid 40s female with two opposing 30+ curves (thoracic and lumbar). Would dance aerobics be detrimental to me? Or should I stick with cycling, walking, and Pilates/yoga? Thanks for any insight!

I believe my scoliosis is relatively mild and I hope it does not progress, but it makes me very sad that dancing is considered to be bad for scoliosis because I've always liked to dance and I've always wanted to learn to dance. 😢
