What happens if you heat wood to the same temperature as if it was burning, but there's no oxygen? Say it was in a kiln filled with100% nitrogen. What happens to the carbon molecules that are released? How would the wood end up?

@@user-nm8si5ni4q Carbon monoxide is formed due to insufficient oxygen during combustion, a molecule of carbon monoxide(CO)contains one atom of oxygen but he said what will happen if,"no oxygen is present. "

It would release wood gas or methane i guess

That's a pyrolysis process! Resulted from burning organic substance like wood in absence of oxygen under high temperature would produce solid, liquid and gas products. Char (solid product) is a leftover of the wood with high content of carbon. It is due to the volatile components in the wood are released, and called as the gaseous products which are mostly methane, CO, CO2 (also known as synthetic gas or syngas). Meanwhile, a liquid product is also produced known as tar or pyrolysis oil. It is a complex mixture of phenols, ketones, alcohols and various hydrocarbons. In instance, the burning of wood when there's no oxygen would produce syngas (methane, CO and CO2), char, and tar. syngas and char are usually the most valuable products when we talk about pyrolysis.

Could you explain the reason why this reaction is not reversible? Why for example ash can't react with something and it's useless.

  • @d4lna

Because chemical bonds have been broken and new ones have been created, this means that this is a new substance that ISNT reversible

Bad for environment? Maybe if all you consider is the fire, but for the wood to be formed in the first place a plant used carbon dioxide from atmosphere in photosynthesis.. matter isn’t created or destroyed.. kinda a net neutral for the environment in this case. But good vid.

  • @joshuastephenkingsly

Wrong. If it releases carbon in the form of CO2 then it's neutral as you say. But due to incomplete combustion all these other toxic gases and PAHs are also created and released which are definitely bad for everyone.

So when I heat my home with local wood that's worse for the environment than electric heat from a coal plant or oil imported from the other side of the world? Nah.
