Science Fiction Theatre (intro and close)

Ойын-сауық

Science Fiction Theatre (with your host, Truman Bradley) ran two seasons in the mid-fifties. Like many series of the 50s and 60s, this one had a memorable theme, and it's the only series I know that moved from color (first season) to b&w (second season). Each episode opened with Truman Bradley's demonstration of a scientific principle relevant to that week's story. This is the opening and closing to "Dead Storage" starring Virginia Bruce.

As a kid I remember these shows. It's probably one of the things that had an effect on the career I chose. BTW...when I was a kid I loved taking things apart to see how they worked and what they were made of.

Some of Frederick Ziv's syndicated series {"THE CISCO KID", "BOSTON BLACKIE", "THE EDDIE CANTOR COMEDY THEATER"} were filmed in color, even though very few stations could telecast color prints at the time they were initially released [black and white prints were usually sent out]; Ziv, as always, looked ahead to future syndication, when virtually everything on TV would be colorcast- and he was savvy enough to forsee that...

Although we do not have an actual musical score to prove it,most historians are virtually certain that the theme of "Science Fiction Theatre" was in fact written by Ray Bloch, who for many years was Music Director for both the Jackie Gleason and, especially, the Ed Sullivan television variety shows of the 1950's and 50's.

However, because of a slump in the syndicated programming market during 1956, Ziv was forced to abandon color filming after the first 39 episodes, switching to black and white for the final 39, before ending the series in 1957- if the series had been as successful as, say, "HIGHWAY PATROL", a third season would definitely have been produced.

Joe, Science Fiction Theatre was a favorite of mine in the mid-50s. Truman Bradley's presentations impressed little me, and the stories were always very interesting, sometimes a bit scary. One I especially liked is "Time Is Just A Place" with Don DeFore. And then there was ''Strange People of Pecos" that featured two actors who would later become good friends: Dabbs Greer and Beverly Washburn. Never could have I imagined that THAT would ever happen.

Composed by "Ray Lewellyn". once thought to have been 1930s & 1940s bandleader Ray Noble, or Jackie Gleason's music director Ray Bloch, ghostwriting, but now has been confirmed to have been composed and conducted by David Rose. He composed it as a "back door deal" since his own name could not be used because he was under contract to MGM Studios as their Music Director and head of MGM Records in 1955 when this was composed and recorded.

There were so many great TV themes in the 50s... Science Fiction Theatre, Sea Hunt, Mr. District Attorney, Highway Patrol, and Superman come to mind. After reading your question, I remembered a Filmfax (No 17, Nov 1989) article by Charles Lee Jackson, II. Searching through my files, I found it, but unfortunately Jackson's research into the series did not turn up a composer for the theme. He can only say that it has similarities to the Sea Hunt theme, so perhaps those to pieces of music share a composer... whomever that might be.
