Science Fiction & Philosophy | With James Burton, Lewis Powell, and Lisa Walters

Zombies, time travel, brain transplants… science fiction and philosophy have a lot in common. Indeed, they have a shared history, with some of the most important figures of the Enlightenment writing science fiction alongside their better-known philosophical work. And Naomi Alderman, Liu Cixin, and China Miéville are among the many that ensure this close relationship persists right up to today. From Francis Bacon’s utopian island to Margaret Cavendish’s polar bear army, our literary and philosophical experts discuss how science fiction and philosophy have influenced one another, putting the ‘phi’ back into ‘sci-fi’.

Listening to literary/humanities people talk about science fiction is entertaining and sometimes hilarious. The spectrum of science fiction is so broad that the term is hardly of any value. Robert Heinlein tried to give "speculative fiction" a meaning that excluded fantasy and some science fiction. Imagining and speculating only partially overlap. An architect could imagine a building that could not hold itself up or an aeronautical engineer could imagine a plane that could not fly. But it might just be a matter of materials that do not exist yet and can be done in 100 years. Imagine a material called bubble steel. Steel with billions of microscopic bubbles evenly distributed so it is actually 80% air. 90% the strength of steel with 20% of the weight. What could be built with that? But technologies change individual's and society's options. Who decides? We can't do something as simple as make double-entry accounting mandatory in the schools. How was 4 years of mandatory English literature decided?

First you must prove that normal humans have souls before you can question if clones have them. LOL
