I find working on bases very liberating - I am always on the lookout for any "garbage" piece of plastic or electronic, or any tiny interesting thing which will fit the scale. There's no mistakes, instead almost exclusively "happy accidents" that manifest as you convert junk into ... usually junk again, but this time in scale! and in the form of art :) Love the video, and love your channel - I hope content creation is as satisfying for you as watching your videos for me

With all the disparate little elements on those rollers, cutting sections out after the roll really mixes bases up to look different to one another. Adding simple sand/rock texture sections really accentuates the decking sections you left in. Adding dusting/drifts of baking soda will really help my terraforming shake and bake colony setting for the mass of multipart Aliens (AvP1.0) models in my shame pile. Still need a dramatic painting approach for masses of Gieger xenos tho so I can finally skirmish/battle with them on the tabletop.

I think they are fun and different enough to be unnoticeable :) That kind of doesn't make sense.. but I feel that when they are all a little individual, it just feels more like a "natural environment". And even though they make everything look nice, don't steal to much attention from the mini. Bases that are all the same, and I start seeing weird patterns on the table.. and for me that steals to much attention.

what I've done recently with "medium", the more runny version to extend acrylics... I layer a drop (let it dry-flatten) and layer more drops over and over making unusual bubbling mud-flats style bases.

I find the website quite inspiring and I've even spent some time thinking about how I can use the packing peanuts as basing materials, if you tear it apart you can get something that could make really nice foam which may work quite nicely for a sci-fi base :)

I'm always embarrassed it's in the hobby supplies, but water based lubricant works really well for keeping the rolling pin from sticking to the green stuff when making bases and it cleans up easily.

I never enjoyed making bases. To me the gluing of sand and random stuff was a bit too messy and I found the natural formations it's supposed to represent a bit dull. This has changed since I got my 3D printer! I've modeled and printed out everything that goes to a base, from a single complete base topper to stuff I can scatter to bases to make them look more interesting - books, skulls, candels, piles of coins, that sort of stuff. This has made me actually enjoy the basing process, to the point where now I actually look forward to also thinking about the base and how to make it enhance the model.

If you do forget to clean your rolling pin and those tiny bits of putty are giving you a hard time, I suggest letting it soak in IPA for a bit. From stripping mini's I know that greenstuff will be easy to remove afterwards.

Have you tried it? I used something we call "red-spirit" once. It's a very cheap but horrible mixture between Ethanol, Propanol and a hint of acetone. Great for cleaning stuff... only the rolling pin cracked... so I'm kind of scared to use alcohol.

Thanks M! Yeah, I've decided to do the orcs as pirates, and a gang of ruffians, and then a crew. But nothing stops me from just interchanging. So if I want I can run the ruffians as a crew, or the orcs. I'm not doing minis with the exact "layout" as the specs. I mean, a sniper rifle on the sniper is nice... but it could be a "sniper hand gun" to me :)

I really like all the thought put into the narrative behind the bases. I feel it really completes their nice look!

Hey, I don't know if this will help but I put my baking soda into an extra dropper bottle I had. The single dropper hole makes for very nice precision baking soda applications. You may want to roll a small paper cone to pour it in the bottle if you try this.

@@52Miniatures just curious, have you ever tried coffee stirrers, straw kind, for pipes? They work well enough for me, but definitely not as solid as uv resin ones. One time I was in a coffee shop that has some oddly shaped stirrers. I'm not ashamed to say I swiped a few. I needed lots of stirrers for that coffee I just bought, you know :-). I've also used 1mm/3mm food grade silicone tubing. They work really well as pipes or if I need a clear energy conduit. Stick a florescent/white painted copper wire inside for the "energy". Once again, I salvaged the copper wire from old cables. I recently found that there's a coil of extremely thin copper wire in one of those solar powered dancing ornament, in case you have an old one of those and no cable. Anyway I like making bases. I fully agree with your sentiment on them. Thanks this video. Cheers.

Thanks for another great video! I was just looking at those molds on GSW and now I've seen then in action I've made a purchase! I am curious to know if you edited the video to remove any shots of you super-gluing the resin parts to your fingers? I have been gluing on a number of resin cloaks & tabards recently and nearly glued every one to my fingers. I had that heart stopping moment when you imagine the nurse saying "You you where trying to glue resin fur to a space soldiers crotch?!" I've been basing my Space Wolves in a future city style as I hate seeing them with snow bases. As if they never leave home. Not much of an fighting force if they only ever stay on home, or refuse to fight on any world where tanning is a possible. I did try painting a few with sunburn, but it looked odd on 35mm scale...

Some great looking bases :) Something that I don't ever see mentioned though, is... how do you attach plastic minis to this? Normally, I use plastic cement to attach the plastic mini to the plastic of the base because it de- and re-bonds the plastic chemically. But when you have bases like this, you've covered it with putty, resin, baking soda, cyanoacrylate etc. - and so plastic cement has no power here. I've not had good experiences with super-gluing model feet, because I find it goes quite brittle and "snaps off" easily eg. when knocked. What do you do?

Very true D! I “pin”, and use super glue. So I drill a hole in the base, and under the foot of the mini. Stick a thin metal wire in the hole and together with superglue this is enough to hold everything together.

Now I have a desire to see the space pirate rum bar on my table (off to plan it out . . .) Check out Spiral Arm studios - they have some awesome sci-fi minis that would work in Stargrave and sci-fi terrain sprues (full of sci-fi bits for terrain)

Resin is exceptionally “small moleculed”. Essentially, from what I can understand, if you get it on your skin, it can seep trough and enter your body. I’m not conspiracy talking here... I have an acquaintance that researches this stuff. Also the fumes when curing are not nice, or the dust particles when sanding. - this obviously goes for all plastics. One shouldn’t inhale plastic basically. Repeated exposure, ie the more plastic you get inside of you, the more likely you get allergies and such. A lot of people talk in videos about using gloves when handling resin, and to keep a 3D printer in well ventilated areas. But not many talk about “why”. And the good people selling these things don’t seem to want to scare people off by telling us either.

Hi Alex. A very specific question. How do you put the minis on the base? Why the question? I understand that the base you have prepared is not completely flat and irregular, so I wound like to know if you pin the mini or just with superglue is it enough? About the integration: If you glue it, wouldn't part of the feet of the minis be a little floating in the air? (same for pinning). This is the reason because I always make the base at the end with the mini already painted, so I can integrate the floor to the feet. Certainly if I make the base separately, it is much easier to paint the details, but this is my doub. Man, you really make really good videos.

Hey Leandro, I pin and superglue. I have had no issue with the minis look like they are "floating". But I make sure to push them down properly. If one is into details, there is always the posibility to pin and glue the mini before the putty has fully cured. Then one can push it down a bit further. Sometimes I attach the mini before I ad the sodium bicarbonate "dust". That way I can ad some dirt to the boots as well, tying everything together.
