Schubert: Symphony No. 2 in B-Flat (New York Philharmonic, Alan Gilbert)

Музыка

Schubert's early symphonies are often neglected as works-in-progress. Although there is some truth in that, as these pieces are heavily overshadowed by his last two symphonies, young Schubert manages to pull off writing a great classical symphony. Influence from Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn could clearly be seen in his second symphony. However, Schubert still manages to incorporate some of his own unique style into writing - for example he modulates to very unexpected keys - for example, listen to 2:03, when the second subject starts, but in the key of Eb compared to the expected dominant of F. Clearly Schubert didn't want to just copy his role models.
NY Phil plays this symphony with great clarity and excitement. Climaxes are very energetic as they should be, but never too loud. The bittersweet ending of the second movement is calming. And overall, the balance in the orchestra is pristine.
