Joan and John Cusack are great people. My landlord met Joan at her house in Chicago. I ran into John twice at the Malibu Inn in California. He recognized my Chicago accent right away. Bought me and my wife a round of drinks just to let him know what was going on back in Chi-town. Humble, honest and real.

Jack Black has actually a comedy-rock band called "Tenacious D" (sort for Tenacious Defense). He and his best friend Kyle Gass formed it in 1994.

School Of Rock is a work of genius. Not only is it a genuinely brilliant and comprehensive education in Rock & Roll, it's also utterly hilarious, perfectly cast and extremely well written. Mike White, Jack Black and Richard Linklater deserve so much credit for this film, but also the incredible kids that make up that class. When a film is so quotable like this you know its done its job and then some. There are countless favourite moments I have in this film, but one that always makes me cackle with laughter is the way Joan Cusack delivers "I've just been informed, all of your children are missing". (Also RIP to Kevin Clark who sadly passed away 2 years ago at just 32 years old.)

I was teaching guitar at the time, and used this movie as inspiration for the kids. One kid wanted to learn Zak's song and he crushed it! Then later we had a summer program called School of Rock and I rehearsed a band of kids on like three or four tunes, and we did a concert for the parents. They ate it up! That was a great summer.
Love when Joan Cusack stands in the corner.

This should be a class. When you think about it Jack black is the best teacher ever. He found rols for everyone. Something they loved, and souther were good at. At he let it grow and he encouraged them. When the little guy wanted to make the outfits, DO IT! You don't wanna be a roadie wanna be a manager? DO IT! wanna sing? DO IT! He never stopped encouraging these kids. He found what they liked and what they were good at and told them to be the best at it. Fun fact the band got back together for a few shows with Jack black like 10 years after this movie

This movie is incredible. This is just Jack Black lifting this kids up and telling them stop listening to 'the man' and do what their passionate about. Every single one had a place, no one was left out and EVERYONE was embraced. This is a gem of a movie. I had this movie on DVD and some of the kids did the commentary, it was so wholesome.
NACHOOOOoooooo.... These and "Be Kind, Rewind" are my favorite jack black films. Really deep, moving films despite being suuuuper silly.
"School of Rock" (the actual school) had it's beginnings in 1996, but prior to the movie, the school only had one actual location. After the movie came out, locations popped up all over the place. Videos from the past few years shows that these kids in the program are really great.

One of the all time best feel good movies. When Tomika takes the mic on stage, I'm in tears every time.
This movie is two hours of Jack Black teaching those kids (and people in general, including the viewer) to be confident in who they are and to pursue the things you're passionate about without worrying about getting approval from others. And you'll notice that he never hesitated to let the couple of kids that wanted to change their role in the band, to change their role in the band. For example, the one kid that wanted to be the band's stylist rather than be part of security; Dewey just said, with no absolutely zero hesitation, "Of course you can, Fancy Pants." No judgments, no weird looks, no questions about why that's what he wanted... he just let him do it. It's a great movie with a lot of teachable moments that everyone can benefit from. I really loved how much this movie got you smiling and laughing 😊

I had a calculus professor in college who also plays the keyboard for a prog rock band and he was a good professor and his band's music is amazing. That dude found a way to teach and keep his musician dreams alive so it's possible. Honestly, this movie is basically Jack Black telling kids that it's okay to be themselves and I love it! Fun fact: they had to do a lot of extra takes on this movie because Jack kept making the child actors crack up on set by being himself
RE: Crowd Dive - In the 70s, my wife (later, we weren't then) went to a Commodores concert at Six Flags Over Texas. Crowd diving was a brand new thing. The bassist put down his guitar and made a huge swan dive from the stage and in her words, "The crowd parted like the Red Sea" and he splatted. She said he eventually staggered back up and continued playing but had obviously getting his bell rung. My favorite part of this movie was the kids were musicians first and performed all their own music.
Ames, if you want to see Summer Hathaway in the future... She's iCarly, Miranda Cosgrove.
Wait. Wait. Wait… when you listed the Jack Black movies it dawned on me, you’ve never seen TROPIC THUNDER??? Ames, I think you would love it. It’s one of the more reacted to films for very good reasons. I highly recommend it. Try going in to it as blind as possible. As for this reaction, like all your reactions, it rocked! (See what I did there?) Keep up the great work!

Thanks for watching!! Haha oh tropic thunder!
This movie is just the best, but also I saw the musical on Broadway and seeing talented kids play live instruments in the Winter Garden theatre was so freaking amazing I bought a ticket to see it again the very next day. And Alex Brightman brought every bit of the energy and humor and spunk that Jack Black did, I have no idea how he could do that 8 times a week
As a bass player, when you said you loved Bass, I immediately subbed. Made my day!
I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s with a lot of this music. Back when public schools were teaching music, band and choir. Wood, metal and electric shops. After school programs for kids were normal and fun. We need to get back to investing in the next generations again. Btw, this movie does Rock..
In my opinion, this is one of THE most influential movies made in the 21st century. Before this film was released, most kids had no appreciation whatsoever for music that was made before they were born. School of Rock is single-handedly responsible for kids today listening to Zeppelin, AC/DC and the Stones.

That is absolutely ridiculous, every line of this comment. It's a great movie, but everything you just said is fiction fantasy. ESPECIALLY when you're talking about Zeppelin, AC/DC and (to a lesser extent) The Stones. Those bands have NEVER gone out of style, every generation discovers them, through a whole variety of avenues (first and foremost, their parents and their older brothers and sisters). In the 80s, those bands continued to be big, in the 90s same exact thing. Amy knew all the songs being referenced (even knew who Lemmy was), and had never seen the movie (although she had played Guitar Hero. Probably as much of an influence, if not more than this movie). I'm not saying the influence was negligible, but that's completely idiotic. I worked at the club they filmed the first scene of this movie (I was there), we had the real School Of Rock playing there, like, the next year, doing an all Zappa show.
My dad took my sister and I to see this movie when it came out and Freddy lying on the floor still kills us.
I don't know if I've ever cried watching this film, but I cried at a couple different points watching your reaction.
This is such a wholesome, funny and awesome movie. The kids must've had a blast and what's even better is that it seems they kept in touch thru the years, they had a reunion, a few yrs ago, with the exception of Freddie (drums) as he sadly passed away. I'm sure that will keep them united and they will pay their respects from time to time. Such an awesome movie. Loved the reaction btw
The kid who played Zach went to school with my younger brother. He is a very talented musician
It's funny to think that both of Jack Black's parents were NASA engineers/rocket scientists. Safe to say little Jack chose a different path.
33:30=In the spirit of rock history, "Edge of Seventeen" is a song from Stevie Nicks' solo career. But, FWM would later incorporate her song into their concerts!
The drummer was a fixture in the northern suburbs of Chicago, but he was killed in a biking accident a few years ago.
It's nice having a reaction that understood the music / song references in School of Rock.
This movie surprised me. I was expecting a run of the mill fish out of water comedy. I didn't expect it to have so much heart.

Wonderful reaction - you made me laugh as much as the movie did. My son when he was around 9 or 10 could recite every line of this movie, so I saw it once or twice! And he would ask me about all the classic rock references in it (most of which I grew up with), so it was a joy to show him.
As a former math teacher, yes, parents are rough. Parent teacher conferences were the worst. I taught at a title 1(poverty stricken) middle school. It was rough.
A legendary movie
There is something so incredibly endearing about this film. I think it's the fact that the Jack Black's honest passion for music and rock just pours through every frame, and it just leans into the campy, comedic, Spinal Tap-esque comedy that's innate in such outsized passion while still reveling in it. That's such a delicate combination because if you lean into campy comedy too much it just makes a joke of the passion and music, but if you lean into the latter too hard you lose the comedy. In a way, the delicate balance it strikes is similar to the major theme in the film of finding the balance between living one's passion and how to survive in a world that will often beat you down for trying to live them. The film gives you a glimpse of how boring and empty life is when you abandon your passions completely, but also how low you can sink when ignore the rest of reality by blindly following them. Anyway, easily one of the best films about music ever made. I think I rank it only slightly behind Amadeus (and they're so different it's hard to compare them). Both speak to me because of my own passion for music; grew up with a dad who played drums to rock radio, and picked up guitar myself around 13 and started learning to play rock as well. I never made much of it, but I've never lost my passion for the music, even if I think I was always more of a "listener" than a "performer."
After playing guitar and keyboards for many, many years in L.A. studios, I eventually ended up back in my hometown. After a time, I decided to be a private guitar teacher. I was basically amazed by how cool and fun these school age kids could be. Which was actually quite a revelation to me since I had never spent any time with kids before. It was really a great experience and I am really glad I decided to do it.

Yes. You were right about Patti. She was such a big buzz kill.
If you ever get the chance, the musical based on this moving as also incredible, Alex Brightman captures jack blacks energy so well, and all the kids would play the instruments live.
Omg me and my brother watched this movie so much when it came out wow thank you for this awesome call back to my childhood
It would take far too many words to describe how music makes me feel, but it's the one thing that from the beginning has never let me down. You clearly understand that importance. I think that now more than ever we need to protect those who teach all manner of the arts. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that music and the freedom of expression will save us all in the end.
School of Rock is an actual school that teaches children music and how to play instruments. They have them in various cities across the country and there is even one here in my area. And, they have a KZread channel.
From what I heard Jack Black was very proud of this movie and it did pretty good in the box office so it really got what it deserved. This is such a great movie, it's fun and in many way educational about music. I had to add my favorite part is when they are playing Zack's song and Jack jumps in and does the guitar solo with his voice. and when you hear them preform the song at the end on the movie jack does the SAME solo he sings. it's so great.
The casting in this movie is immaculate. Definitely a tear jerker while also making you bust a gut at the same time.
what I found on KZread today: School of Rock Reunion jam session. It's called "Long Way To The Top" - School of Rock Reunion Concert LIVE. It's from 8 years ago.
Jack IS a great musician, mainly bc of the passion he puts in his music. When you're in the mood for some nonsensical comedy, you should try "Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny". That's Jack Black in his purest form.
RIP Freddy Jones :( one of my favorite movies
I watch this movie everytime I need a little boost of inspiration. Not just for playing music, but anytime I feel like what I'm doing seems unimportant. Is that thing about one great rock show can change the world, yk? I just love it.
This is such an AMAZING movie. I, like you, thought the kids were so awesome. An article came out though that some of the kids said that they were picked on in school after the movie. It even made some of them quit acting. Crazy to think these amazing kids were getting picked on so much for such an awesome movie.
