School lunch: Is $1.50 a child enough?

After taking out labor, equipment and transportation costs, the city of Bridgeport has about $1.50 to spend on lunch for each child. CNNMoney visits where daily meals are made for more than 10,000 public school students.

@@dayday2wops It is true; there truly is little, if any, difference. Be it food served at hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, schools, it is essentially all of the same lifeless food produced by faceless corporations from basically the same giant distributors. The system has been streamlined to maximize profits and enrich for the non-needy (e.g., corporate coffers and CEOs) while extracting as much from the deserving people in need. The time to act is definitely now.

The lunch ladies at the school I went to started a program that instead of throwing away the food they had left over from breakfast and lunch that it would be discreetly packed and given to the elementary students in need. But there wasn’t enough for the middle school and high school students (my school was k-12 grade) They did this in fear they would get caught and loose their jobs.

I was a "free lunch" kid and it was horrible. They fed us trash while you got to see the other kids unpack their healthy lunches made by their parents. Looking back you could even see a difference in happiness, mental health, and physical health/weight between the free lunch kids and the kids whose parents could afford to make their lunches. It's just a sad situation :( But I love my parents forever and always, they did their best.

@Yonah, so it is okay to steal from people as long as it goes to the poor? It probably won’t save children from starving, especially as they don’t provide enough food. Taxation is slavery. It will likely not help at all. All it means is that people pay more sales tax, income tax, property tax or any other taxes. If it is sales taxes then it will increase the price of food. All it means is those same people who have their children on taxpayer funded meals will pay extra taxes so there is no point in using tax money to fund meals.

  • @VitalikHobbies

Tax slave every where you go there are taxes so stop acting like the are taking your entire paycheck taxes go to foundations that don’t make money but help the world. Like schools unless you wanna go to a private school and pay way more than your taxes. Or police funding how do you think they get money? Just end this argument and stop trying to prove something. Ok

7th grade was the first year I didn't qualify for free or reduced lunch, even though my parent's income hadn't changed since I was in kindergarten. Lunch was $3.50 a day and I couldn't afford that. I often just sat and watched my peers eat while I did homework during lunch. When I did get the lunch, sometimes my account would be off by 50 cents or so and the lunch lady would take my lunch away and say "sorry hun, no lunch today" and then toss all the untouched food on my tray into the garbage 😟

Public libraries, schools , food stamps, health care and many many more things they cant just focus on the food, be grateful you have something to eat that at least contains some nutrients and protein. Unlike some schools in other countries there is nothing to eat.

if they cut back a little from the army funds it will definitely boost their school lunch and health care program ...!! Little kids needn't be grateful for frozen stuff... n moreover some can't even afford that.. The bad diet will build an unhealthy generation which in turn will rise the health care cost in an unimaginable way.. we really underestimate the dangers of unhealthy diet..

wow this makes the NYC public school system look like a 5 star hotel's banquet. elementary school lunch did kind of suck but in middle and especially high school i can honestly say that barring a few hiccups, such as completely frozen salad or frozen peanut butter sandwiches, we had really nice lunches and plenty of options....turkey, ham, PB&J, and tuna sandwiches to choose from, a salad bar...chocolate milk, pizza, cheeseburgers, chicken tenders...not bad...sometimes some ice cream and hot dogs too

You must’ve graduated during the Bush Administration. Childhood obesity was rampant because back then, school food was cheap and loaded with fat and sodium. Once Obama came along, they tried making things “healthy” but in reality they just cut the salt out of everything, cut your portions, and make everything by just tossing in a convection oven. Both were bad for kids, but at least I enjoyed school food during Bush’s tenure

This is one of the better KZread videos I’ve seen in a while. Addressing the problem with school lunches is hard because of the inconsistency from different places although follow a guideline. From my personal experience I’m not that big of a guy I weigh a little under average for a freshman in high school, but it takes 3 chip bags and 2 main courses and 1-2 sides in order to fill me up. Just imagine someone bigger than me with a bigger appetite just for them not to afford it so their hungry. The way school lunches are low quality with a high price. I’m not saying everything should be free but if kids need food then they need to eat. I’m just saying overall there needs to be a big change for the future generation. Thanks for reading my opinion

Most kids sit at the table clenching their stomachs because they would rather starve(myself included) than eat prison food. The sad part is that we arent aloud to bring lunch to school. But our teachers can bring microwavable items, and they even have a microwave and vending machines in the teachers break room.

There is a girl at my school on the volleyball team, and she only goes off of school food right? At our school we only get fries that taste like cardboard and rotten strawberries. She always eats all of her food and goes to ask for more, but they yell at her and say that was plenty of food. (I forgot to mention, we aren’t allowed to have ketchup either.) I went to the volleyball game because I want to try out for the team next year and she told the coach that she felt really faint. Then right in the middle of the game she hit the ball and fainted. The girls from the team explained it to the coach and it turns out that she couldn’t eat any of her food. The strawberries were moldy, the “milk” was chunky and expired, and the fries were completely covered in mold and there was a bunch of bugs inside the fries. All of my friends have to go off school lunches and everything is expired now. There is absolutely nothing left at our school to eat.

Although $1.50/student doesn't sound like much, it's actually a pretty generous portion especially when you're buying in bulk. Jamie Oliver did a program on the crap that the kids in Britain's public schools were eating. He was given a budget of 37 pence (roughly 54 cents USA) per student but it was incredibly difficult to prepare good, healthy lunches on that. He went to Italy and there, they spend roughly the equivalent of 90 pence/student (roughly $1.30 US) and that included the students being fed organic pasta, olive oil, quality cheeses, bruchetta along with a fruit and/or vegetable each day. 20 cents more per student might not sound like a lot but again, when you're doing it in bulk, it should make a big difference. The fact that these students in the States still don't seem to be eating very healthy food says that something's not adding up here. Why don't the schools start growing their own fruits and vegetables? There are some schools that have raised garden beds on the roofs of the schools. This could easily supplement the dietary requirements and teach the kids about where our produce actually comes from.

I think thats a great idea. There's a school in my area that does do this. It teaches kids so much. Do you think typical American kids would eat it though? I feel like we have more of a home issue here. Parents tend to let their kids have poptarts and cocoa puffs for breakfast, lol. I'd hate to see my nephew served an apple and some oatmeal. He's too spoiled to the processed stuff already. Parents are too.

Galaxy Rhen I know, that's the problem. Too many kids eat garbage at home because neither mom or dad knows how to cook. I guess we were from the last generation of kids who knew what a home-cooked meal was. With that said, I still think if they would bring back Home Economics, take kids out to farms, TEACH them something beyond computers and then have the schools grow their own produce, we might be able to put a dent in reversing out horrendous food culture.
