OMG!!! Thank you so much Jon Crane. After 15 fails for other repairs in our house, this fix really worked! Saved us $110 and restored our faith in DIY fixes!
Clear and concise video. Thanks very much for posting this fix. This has seemed to correct a recurring issue we were having with the lock spin, and it was the spring that took a set. As soon as I pulled the semi-circular plastic cam, i felt the tension come of the spring. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! Our lock had problems #1 AND #2. Clear, simple instructions and a relatively quick/easy fix. Thanks!
Absolutely fantastic video that clearly identifies the three root causes for the issue. I Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this with all the viewers !! I have the exact same problem with this Slage lock and fixed it within 10minutes after watching this video.
Wow. Clear, concise and accurate. Fixed my lock in minutes after watching this. Awesome.
Excellent video! The “relaxed spring” repair worked perfectly.
You fixed my door lock thank you so much for your insight and giving me the knowledge to pull it apart and fix it 😊
Thanks! Very helpful! You just saved me $149! I was going to buy a new lock, but instead I watched your video and fixed my old one.
OMG Thank you!!!!! I love my Schlange and have had them for over 12 years with no issues. Your fix worked perfectly!!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
Thank you for the very clear demonstration and explanations. You have saved my sanity; this door lock was driving crazy for months.
My front door one has been doing that for a while, thank you for this!!!!!
Thank you - #3 the lockout toggle was facing downwards and I had no idea. Life saver and bookmarked for future reference.
Your recommendations worked like a charm. Ten year old lock works flawlessly now. Thanks
I’ll add my thanks to the list. Your very clear instructions helped me fix all three of my problem locks. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I love this. Thanks so much for actually explaining how it all works! Very interesting and now we can apply those principles to other door lock models!
Just use your video to air my lock. I was all set to go out and buy a replacement but now I don’t need to very grateful for this helpful information. Keep up the good work.
This fixed our lock. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Mine was the spring. Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. Your instructions were spot on.
Thank you! Great video. Very clear step by step instructions and it fixed the problem.
Thank you for sharing these tips. Fixed my deadbolt issue in less than a minute after watching your video.
Thanks! Fixed both my locks which would make solenoid noise but not engage the deadbolt. Spring was just bound up now they work great.
Just followed this video step by step and fixed my lock. For me it was the spring. Pulling the plastic piece out and repositioning on the spring fixed it for me. Wonderful video. Thank you so much.
Thank you! We just embarked on what became a Sunday headache and $200 after. You are clear and on point! You brought a marriage closer!!!!

Same here...spring issue...readjusted and it's fine. Thanks so much for the video.
Relaxed spring was the issue on mine. Thanks so much Jon.
Thank you .I followed along and fixed the lock. Very pleased
Thank you!!! Great video and detailed explanation …10 minutes ago, I thought ours broke and we were going to have to go in and out of the garage until I got a replacement… pulled up this video and 3 minutes later i fixed the issue!
Thanks! You made my repair quick and easy.
Very helpful, thank you! Got my lock working in no time!
Great video. Fixed the issue with my Schlage. Thanks!
Thank you - i will be trying mine to fix tonight. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for the super simple and easy to follow video!
Great video! So simple and great instructions. I love diy videos that let me feel like the house hero! Thank you!
Thanks. Love how concise your video was. My lock wasn't working. I guess my spring was too tight because everything else was okay. Anyways, you may have saved me some money. Thanks

Right On! 🙌 Thanks for the great feedback! Glad it helped. It sure helped me. I have a few of these locks. I got a couple replaced by Schlage before I started fixing them.
Just reset the spring on mine and it's working again. Thanks for this video!
Another issue that was on mine was the spring had come off the guiderails for the solenoid that spins, and was barely hanging on when the motor spun but not creating enough torque to move the pin. I put the spring back onto the guide rails and that fixed my problem. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much. The spring was my issue twice now the first time I returned it. The second time I went to KZread. Easy fix thanks to this video. I have several of the same locks love them. But the one we use the most the spring thing happens too every couple years.
8:31 great video super clear and to the point bravo!!!
Thanks! I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong and it turned out to be that spring! It looked perfectly fine until I did your fix. You're awsome!
Thanks for the help. Got working thanks to your video.
With these instructions, I fixed it! Now to pull out other push button lock that was broken and I put back in the box. Thank you
Yep...that fixed my issue. Great video. THANK YOU!! I really appreciate it!!!
The spring was my problem. Thanks very much for your helpful information! 👍
Excellent video showing how the mechanism works and the potential issues. We have three of these locks, and one of them was experiencing an issue with the spring under the plastic piece. Thanks to your tips, that lock has returned to fully operational status.

Great video very well explained and clear video, thank you for your valuable time
Great Video, thanks. I have found this condition happens over time and requires the same periodic maintenance procedure. This is caused by the drive motor that gets out of sync, favoring the UNLOCK rotation. What i have found is that "compressing" the spring is the better solution. And the real solition that Schlage should consider is providing the owners of these locks with a slightly long pin to better engage the cog.
The second method worked for me. I had to do it twice. Much easier with a power screwdriver! Thanks.
It fixed it ... large spring was a little fatigued. I adjusted where the prong went in to move plastic semicircle higher up. Thanks
Thank you for the really helpful video! I was able to repair our lock!! 😊
Great Job of Explaining Jon!
When watching this video, I immediately realized the solenoid spring was my problem based on the exact symptom I was having with our dead bolt. I'm betting that over time, the spring ROTATES/SPINS, and moves it's position during use and from closing/SLAMMING the door shut. As soon as I opened my bead bolt up and saw that the bottom of that spring was not visible, I knew the spring was no longer in it's correct positioning. The moment I pulled that plastic "C" shaped part out, the spring bounced down and became visible. The lock immediately became usable again. Thank you for providing such a detailed visual of the workings of this particular dead bolt.
This helped! I was able to fix our locks! The spring on the solenoid needed to be readjusted

Right On! 🙌 Thanks for watching and the feedback!!
Thank you for your help. After opening locking mechanism, the pin w/spring was not attached and laying loose in the chamber. I attached the pin/spring back. Put assembly back together and worked flawlessly. Thank you so much for this. You're the 👌 best.
Much appreciated!! My problem was the larger spring under the plastic 'C' shaped part operated by the solenoid. Removed the part, spring 'relaxed' (?) and everything working normally again!! The symptom was the spring wouldn't release and the lock was 100% engaged from inside and outside - anyone could open the dead bolt at any time. I can now return the new replacement I bought unopened - thanks you you, Jon !
The spring trick worked, thank you!
been looking for this video for a while now on and off, this is exactly what my lock is doing, thankyou

Thank you so much for posting this!
This absolutely worked. Thanks
Thank you for this! I have that exact lock, with that exact problem. Unfortunately none of the solutions worked for me, and yet you fixed my lock! Why? Because you said somewhere that schlage will replace battery draining lock. Well, it never occurred to me to see if my 7 year old lock is under warranty! It is! I email schlage with the pictures of my lock, and in about a week or so I got an email that said that my new lock is on the way! So yea, you saved me quite a bit of money!
Fixed my lock thanks to this; thank you!
Thanks for the advice. The “relaxed spring” repair worked - an easy 10 minute fix.

The spring was also my issue. I figured something was broken internally but nope, it was just a 10 cent spring hanging up.
While not the same exact lock, issue number 2 was happening in my Schlage electronic lock. I was able to fix it and save $159 on a new front door lock. Thank you for the helpful video!
I have a slightly different model and determined that I only needed to change my battery. Still, the video was immensely helpful. Many thanks!!!
Thanks so much, I was able to quickly repair my lock after watching this.
Thank you, you saved me buying a new lock!
Had this issue just fixxed it, thank you so much
this is the exact problem I'm having, it's hit or miss and typically doesn't engage when it's cold outside. i'm going to open mine up and try these fixes out. i hope it helps and saves me $100 to replace it.
Thank you!
Awesome, thank you
I installed three of these style locks almost three years ago and one by one all three succumbed to the "weak spring" malady. Glad I found this video as now all three are working properly. Many Thanks! One has to wonder how long this "fix" will last before another "redo" is required? Hopefully the folks at Schlage will have corrected/improved on the quality of springs used in their newer models....or not, because planned obsolescence sells more locks.

So my malfunction cost $300.00 for a locksmith to get back into my home. That worked 2 weeks, the rain has my Schlague malfunctioning again. Was just percolating about the cost to replace or fix it again. Is Schlague sending out their certified locksmiths to remedy, does anyone know ?

The lock needs to get cleaned as the factory lubricant accumulates fine dirt that impedes the operation. Simply clean out the mechanism with carb cleaner and then spray it with a Teflon dry lubricant that will not gum up. The lock will work great again. Spring tension is not the problem. It’s mechanical and has to be serviced every few years or so.
Thank you for this brilliant video. Please enable the tip option on KZread so we adoring DIYers can send you a token of our appreciation.
Thank you sir. This helped me fix my lock quickly.
Awesome…. Thank you
Thank you sooo much for this fix ✊
Thank you, very helpful!
Thanks so much! I have 3 of these (on all 3 doors including into the garage), because I have a fear of getting locked out accidentally 😂 They’ve been great for 5 years with only battery replacements once a year, but the most used one failed. Went ahead and took the other 2 off and found the spring/ solenoid issue on both of those, though they were still working. Easier to do once I practiced on the first one, maybe prevent future problems, hopefully? I’m afraid of the WiFi ones, because our WiFi services hiccups often.
worked! Thanks so much.
Many thanks! Now I know the strange beep I was getting this morning was related to a low battery. Swapping out today. Thanks again!

Thanks! This fixed the electronic locking/unlocking mechanism on my new lock. I had my lock rekeyed and possibly the person who did it locked the manual override (3rd fix). It's funny that the installation manual doesn't mention this as a troubleshooting option.
THANK YOU!!!! It worked, I fixed it. Mine was the larger spring.

Hey Right On! 🙌 That’s awesome 👏
Thank you this was very helpful 👍🏽
Great video, as others said, clear and to the point!! Mine started doing this after just two weeks, and these fixes are mechanical which seem more likely after some time/use?? I watched the video while on hold for Schlage tech support (I asked--pronounced SH-LAY-GH). The rep I got worked tech support for over 20 years and seemed knowledgable. She said this can also happen to due software issues, and usually a factory reset fixes the problem. However, my particular lock failed to factory reset! First time she saw that. So I'm exchanging for a new one, but not confident with this style lock. Prior to this, I tried two Quikset locks, and both had faulty motor/mechanisms out of the box so I got the Schlage. I do think this design is better, having the software activate a solenoid, vs turning the motor manually... we shall see...
I fixed my Schlage according to your instructions, thanks very much

Right On! 🙌 That’s very cool. Thanks for the comment. Nice to know. 😊
Thank you! It was the spring and it worked. Just curious though if we will have to do this every year or so?
I had this same problem and contacted Schlage. They told me to do a factory reset, and it solved the problem. No need to open up the lock. Update - the lock stopped working differently, it was always able to unlock. I contact Schlage again. They had e send them information, including a video of the issue. They are sending me a replacement front portion of the lock -- completely free under warranty, even though it is ten years old. They made a point in their initial email of saying that opening the lock voids the warranty. So maybe contact the first. Of course, if you are able to fix it yourself, it is the faster option.
This saved me BIG TIME!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!

That’s because you don’t have one of the other problems. I tried that first, too, it didn’t do anything. Bookmark this in case you need it later. My most used one is the one that failed, after 5 years.
