The Schipperke goes by other names such as Spitzke, Spits, Spitske. This fearless and devoted dog breed is always willing to protects and guard its family from any potential danger.
Small sized and easy maintenance is what makes these dogs so attractive but their intelligence and curiosity are one of the several disadvantages of owning the Schipperke. Continue to watch this video to get a complete list of dog breed traits and facts about the Schipperke, to see if this is the perfect dog for you
In the 1880’s Schipperkes became a recognized breed, originating from Belgium. The Schipperkes were believed to be descendants of the Belgian Sheepdog. Unlike its predecessor who was created to be a herding dog, the Schipperkes was developed to be a small watch guard, and was often seen guarding boats that plied the canals between Brussels and Antwerp.
Little shepherd or Little captain may be the english translation of the word Schipperke, and either definition would do as they both describe the heritage of this breed.
Queen Marie Henriette made this dog popular after she saw one at a Brussel dog show in 1885. The popularity of the Schipperkes skyrocketed which eventually led to its importation into the United States in 1888.

I've had my Schipperke for 5 years now. I started training him when he was about 12 weeks old. He knows so much more than I could have imagined. When I speak to him, I do so like I'm speaking to a child and he understands everything I say! Very, very intelligent and easy to train and very, very loyal. I taught him about 20+ actual tricks but the biggest thing is he listens to me. Stops when I say stop, no when I say no, etc... I would never have another breed of dog.

They are also called Devil dogs for a reason. I love them dearly, but they are so wicked smart.
I've had several dog breeds and I highly recommend this one. Our Schipperke was amazing. Never ran out of gas. Definitely an explorer. We had a 100ft rockery that was heavily planted. We came home one day and the entire thing was dug up and tunneled. Hahahaha. My parents were shocked and I laughed so hard I cried. Fearless & most loyal dog ever. Never had any problems and almost no vet bills. They shed, but nothing crazy if you brush them. Very social and smart. Great dogs for people that are active. One more thing, they are pretty fast for long distances so don't think catching them to go home at the dog park will be easy.
I found my schipperke boy named Pepper in the pound when he was 5. Now 13 he has always been obedient and sweet. A quiet boy compared to my barky corgi boy named Simon. At 13 Pepper has little energy compared to when he was young partially due to arthritis. He's just a sweet boy. He graze eats and isn't overweight at all.

My wife and I have had two. My LilBear past after 15 years of pure joy. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her. After 3 years without her I'm ready to start a new journey with another
I have about 20 years of experience with two Schipperkes (female and male). These creatures are lovable and require more work than the average breed (e.g. Goldens, Labs, etc.). The narrator of this video is 1000% correct. For the first time dog owner, a Schipperke WILL give you MORE than you can handle. These dogs are hyper-intelligent, energetic beyond belief, and extremely particular about those whom they listen to. One thing that must be clearly understood that these canines can have extremely sharp temperaments regardless of training. And, their edgy disposition actually sharpens with age. Truth be told, I have also lived with nine Dobermans in my life. All are/were more social and approachable overall than our Schipperkes - by far. The number of bites issued by the two skips in 20 years heavily outweighs my nine dobes (over in 45 years). Hopefully, you get the picture here. Now, I don't bring this up to discourage anyone from shacking up with one of this extraordinary breed. I certainly don't regret having done so myself. However, PLEASE consider what you are getting into BEFORE you adopt a Schipperke. No one wants to see a dog land in s shelter simply for being themselves when their person runs up the white flag. They might not be as fortunate as our Raven was when we adopted her under those circumstances. Otherwise, they might spend a long time there or even worse. Thanks for reading.

The video description is mostly correct, yes, apart from the coat colour. While black is (by far) the most common colour, they can also come in creamy white and red.

I’m the first time dog owner with a Schipperke. I thought it would be much trickier. It’s really a perfect dog for me. Small, very intelligent. Calm and funny at home, active outside. No problems at all.
I am the human of a cross Schipperke - Kelpie - Border Collie named Frankie. Smaller than a Collie or a Kelpie but bigger than a Schipperke - She now 9 years old but is still extremely active and is also easily the smartest dog in the park even though there are other Kelpies and Border Collies there. Her favorite game is to hide a ball behind one tree and then hide herself behind another tree and peek out to see where I am and then race out to get to the ball before I get there. She invented this game herself.
We had a female that came into a family with two large malamutes and a full clowder of cats. She found her place right away and was a great companion to all. Very smart, willful and vocal. Not big on tricks, but took to the basics with ease. When our son came, she took to the new baby without a snag and was a great friend to him as he grew. Yes they bark at non family coming into their house! Even people they see a lot will set off the alarm. She was not aggressive in the least, but wanted to be sure that everyone knew there was an interloper afoot! She wasn't much of a cuddler, would like a 5 minute cuddle in your lap, but then had enough. Same with being on the bed, stay long enough to make sure we got our love, but then wanted to be near on the floor in her own space. Always curious, can use play to reinforce good behavior.

Interesting about yours not being a cuddler. Mine is all about cuddling lol, that’s his life. I’ve never met a more affectionate dog in my entire life. Every person he meets he wants to give them a hug to greet them. Mine started out not liking tricks, but always listened very VERY well. He eventually learned to enjoy tricks and knows quite a few of them now. He’s behaved enough that I got him certified as a service dog so he goes anywhere and everywhere with me. Never had a single issue with him.

it's nice to meet you and to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or PROBABLY will SOMEWHAT like cats and i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE schipperkees
My 3 yr old girl has so much energy, she has feed available to her at all times but is definitely not fat, more like lean muscle. Zoomies every morning, lots of toys and plenty time snooping in the backyard keeps her busy. Neither thunderstorms or fireworks have any effect on her, but the doorbell gets her barking
I saw a photo of the breed in an encyclopedia when I was a child and loved the look of it. I was always curious to know more about this proud looking breed. Thank you so much for this terrific video.
my schipperke is 3 years old and I've also trained him since he was about 10 weeks old and yes they are way to smart and its funny how she describes how there strong headed and do what they want I like to describe it as naughty naughty naughty when I say this he knows exactly what it means and starts to howl lol sometimes you just have to laugh at the bad things they do

Great video about this unique breed! Schipperkes are wonderful when matched with the right owner. We have had four join our family over the years and are planning on a fifth soon. I agree with all the points raised and anyone interested in this rather intelligent, energetic, surprisingly sturdy, and very loyal breed should consider both the Pros and Cons well. We've had two schipperkes over the years. The current one is nearly 12 years old. She has some annoying traits and can be stubborn but if you want a truly loyal companion that shows how much she loves you, you can't go past this breed of dog.

I have had 5 Schipperkes. They have different personalities not only gender related, but each dog shows up their own personality. I have had 2 males who became violent toward their own puppies. One father almost took his puppies eye out. The son grew to be ultra sweet .and easy to train. You just never know. I love the breed, but be aware. They can be biters, and rotten all around pets with other animals and people, or fun loving, adorable pets that will bring joy to everyone. If your a gambler. Give one a try. It’s 50/50 you will get a fabulous pet, or a nasty jerk you’ll wind up putting down because it’s bitten someone or more people
My dog is a likely a Border Schipper from the research I've done online but I haven't done a doggie DNA test yet. I found her last winter in the woods on my family's property in Lousiana, where she had been hanging around for 2 weeks because they fed her and had a heat lamp/bed setup in a shed. There are a lot of hurricane dogs in that state, as well as dog-dumpers. She was about a year old when I decided to adopt her and I've had her for a year. This dog is definitely a handful. She is so beautiful and intelligent. I taught her 10 tricks in the 1st month of having her. She doesn't mind tricks but leash training and call/response have been a struggle because she doesn't respond to treats when she's distracted (outdoors). Even brought her for a training session and the best they could do was recommend a specific harness because she wouldn't take the treats. She's an escape artist and has wiggled out of a well-fitting harness and collar a couple of times. It makes me sad she can never be off-leash because she just won't listen when she doesn't want to. Definitely barks at every little thing and has a guard dog mentality... BUT she is so friendly and sweet and has never bitten me. She even "smiles" when excited, exposing her teeth with a little grimace that never gets old. Independently natured means less cuddling than I'd like but she likes to sit near me on the couch or under me, under the couch. Crate training was super easy and she pottys on command when we go out. I really love this little devil dog but I can see how she might have run away or was dumped because of her energetic/barky nature. She's also very expressive and vocal with little sighs or begs. Her eyes are human-like and I can always tell what she's thinking. She's also very needy and starts a whole frantic routine whenever I'm getting ready to leave the apt. I've been unemployed the past year, otherwise I doubt I would have made the progress I've made with this wild little beast from the woods. My angel beast ❤

I had a skipper a non-conforming apparently full skipper. The coat wasn't all black. And it had about a 1-in tail that narrowed down to about the size of a small finger. Anyway I had her for a lot of years last century. And I still have a small spot for that dog. The way I found out she was a non-conforming skipper was I was coming out of a facility with her and there was a lady that had paid through the nose for a dog that was a registered skipper. They have that unique greeting and they recognize each other! Or any dog that is and the other dog goes wtf. Anyhow the lady that had the registered dog says that's a skipper. I'm using voice to text and it doesn't like the full name that's why I'm shorting it to skipper. She had the disqualifying stubby tail that had about three extra inches of tail mostly bone. And a bushy hind in of smoke colored fluff. One tough dog. I trained her to ride beside a bicycle and took some 0.015 hobby wire and buried it in the strip of reflective tape and had a flag on top of it of about 1 in wide reflective tape the overall thing was probably 6 in long including that that was on the the velcro adapter that I put on the collar for night time jogging beside the bike. Never had a problem with the wire the way I did it. But it sure did get people to meet and greet so to speak as to how I made that cuz they wanted it for their dog. . Her thighs because I ran her at least five nights a week after work here in Arizona especially in the summer and before the problem with gunfire that we have now random murders etc back in the '80s and '90s. I had her about 15 years before health problems when it got bad I took her to the local county pound and had them sticker and let me take her out under a tree and yes I saw her last breath. I got her at a county pound with mange that was almost impossible to diagnose that I think she had one bug only and I spent too much money before I took it back and they gave me something that would work for free cuz I was going to give her back to him if they couldn't give me something to kill that bug. And to be honest it was that white stinky stuff that you mix in water and wash them down.. I'd had her for 3 weeks and I never saw that dog get a good night sleep before I bathe her and 2x power and immediately she quit biting her body because it got it. So we didn't have the sweetest of starts but I did love that dog. I had to put down the sweetest cocker spaniel mix you could ask for and she had Alzheimer's. I even went back there the next day to make certain they hadn't put her on the adoption list because she could snap out of it and then be totally out of mind and unaware of where she was or what was going on she was a black cocker mix that it was very smart also. Now I got as I like to refer to her My Jew dog, Ruby has a companion to her and I to My GSD that's had a different upbringing was not socialized until she was almost 3 years old so?????. Daisy will be 7 I got her when she was about 27 months old not house broken nothing but that GSD, Dizzy Daisy learn to not hate men with three readings of a statement that she was going to be put down if she didn't change your attitude toward me. I think she started to understand the second time, but when I started reading the piece of paper so I would say it the same way each time each half of it before I got the first sentence done I had to call concrete repair for the floor! Well that's enough for now we've got cats also. A Maine Coon and a couple of mixed up cats one in less than a month it's January 9th 23 will be legal to go into a bar and sit on a stool and drink alcohol.
I had one who just passed away at 14 years old, not a breed I had even heard of and she came into my life due to an ex partner who left her with me. She was a very loving, intelligent and VERY full on dog and while she was a real sweetheart she was very protective of us. She was very fearless too, to the point I had to be careful she didn't get herself hurt by taking on big dogs that got to close to us. The worst thing by far was her hair - she dropped so much of it! But overall she was a wonderful dog and I miss her dearly
I have had 3 Schips and this is mostly all true for my schips except for the high rate of shedding. It was noticeable with 2 but now that I only have one the shedding is minimal. Other than that everything else is true. Mine barked a little until I told them that it was ok and they eventually stopped barking at every little thing. My Pomeranian barked nonstop no matter what was going on and didn’t stop until she was ready to stop so I had a comparison. I can also resound that two walks a day is absolutely necessary to keep a skipper key from becoming bored and barking. Measuring the food is a must. I also weigh my dog once a month to make sure I’m on track.
idk a whole lot about all the different dog breeds, but I stumbled on the National Dog Show 2022 video and damn nearly cried when I saw this adorable baby, I'm obsessed!!!! But from the comments, I'll definitely do thorough research into this breed before I even consider adopting one.
Few months ago I saw the cutest little dog on the internet through the humane society...three months prior, I had to put to rest my little King Charles/pug mix...he was one month short of 12 years. His name was Eddie. We got Eddie when he was five years... Eddie was in a puppy mill used for breeding... Eddie came from a bad situation to us and had so much love to give... I still tear up.... I decided I was going to bring home this little dog I saw on the internet...call it love at first sight.... I named him Toby, the name he came with he wouldn't answer to... Toby is a Schipperke/Pomeranian.... color tan with fur and skirts like the Schipperke....his appearance at first you'd think Pomeranian but knowing he's different. If Toby was black Schipperke all the way. I had to read up on the Schipperke breed.. Toby had nightmares first few nights, totally out of control.. people at the humane society told me the previous owners said he was pushy, can't groom or clip toenails, wouldn't behave, couldn't be left alone. Toby is 2 1/2 year's. Four months later, Toby with his Schipperke spirit and brains is very devoted, fun... I had to work with a lot of patience and understanding the breed (nothing about him is Pomeranian except color, fur tan with some white). Past tense I broke many mustangs both for myself and customers...each horse based on it's personally using my trained horses for herd instincts. Training and understanding is what makes a great animal without breaking their spirit... except with mustang's....they love to roll in sage brush.
My skip is 11 now and absolutely hates water since he was a pup 😂
Beautiful dog. I wonder if my dog Lucky was part Schipperke as many people would suggest at dog parks. She looked very similar but had a white stripe on chest.
So cute 🥰
I just adopted a dog and no one can figure out what kind of dog he is. He's definitely part Chihuahua, but the other parts are a mystery. A groomer told me about these dogs and after looking at pictures of a schipperchi I am almost convinced that he could be that breed. My dog's name means captain 😊 How fitting!
I think there a lovely little dog
I have a schipperke mix. He knows just about 3 commands and is very reactive and slightly aggressive. He’s 1 now and I need to be stricter on myself in training. Any tips?
Correction on coat color. Black is the main color, but they also come in apricot, brown, gray/blue, or white/cream. Also, they can have muti color coats but this is considered a flaw with the breed. Prices due change due to rarity on coat color.

They both lived close to 18 years each. 2 things I learned were: They need to be the only dog in your house, and Schipperkes are the most remarkable dog I've ever owned, and at age 61, I've never not owned, or I should say been blessed by having, a dog in my life. Schipperkes who aren't black have a recessive gene from a past mix from another dog breed that sometimes comes out, then people will breed two non black Shipperkes to keep the the non black lines going, but that recessive gene also carries with it other traits that don't meet the Schipperke breed standard, so they never do look quite right for a Schipperke. Not to say that they can't be great dogs, but if you want the true breed standard black is where it's at.
