Why on earth would you cut out the part where he says: "Now tear it down, and rebuild it like she said." You remove a good deal of the impact of the scene by cutting it before then. It was only another 3 or 4 seconds.

There's an interesting interaction between Helen and Goeth in this scene. In the beginning, Goeth shows a glimpse of humanity by saying, "I don't want to give you my cold." Then, presumably after spotting Helen's fragility (she was shivering out of fear and because it was freezing outside), he retreats behind his mask of cruelty and blows smoke carelessly into her face, maybe surprised and annoyed that he can still feel feelings for others.

I interpreted it very differently. When he said “I don’t want to give you my cold,” I thought he was acting polite because that’s part of his game; he likes the twistedness of being cruel while sometimes showing contradicting courtesy. It’s fun for him. He doesn’t actually care about giving her his cold, at least not out of care for her. Throughout the whole movie he speaks somewhat kind or polite words to other people who are his inferiors he wants to kill. It makes him feel more powerful because he knows he doesn’t have to use threatening words to be absolutely terrifying. I think he reacted coldly after seeing her shivering hands because fragility, while partially contributing to his feeling of power and superiority, also really annoys him, not as a response to any feeling of sympathy, but because weakness in essence purely bothers him. It’s gross and pathetic in his eyes. I think any feelings he felt for her developed later, although he felt a bit of her appeal in an extremely surface level way.

I always think that his line and he covering his nose was meant to be a sense of disgust for Jews, he tries to be polite but he's always the opposite way, at least at this point. Here he seems to not want to stay too close, afraid of being "affected", as we see when he calls her closer and then he steps backward again. Even the fact that he bares her hands while she was shivering, it doesn't seem too merciful

@@ruthiehensh Honestly, you're right though. Goeth is one of the best movie villains of all time. H's right up there with Anton Chigurh, Joker, Vader, Hannibal Lecter. Fienne's Goeth is definitely in this category and 3 of those 4 were Oscar-winning performances so yes, Ralph Fiennes should've won an Oscar for this role.

To think the real life Goeth was so monstrous, they had Fiennes tone it down for the movie because people wouldn't believe someone could be so evil.

Incredible as they had murdered millions and at the time were doing death marches. But the real reason he got in trouble was not sending all goods stolen from the Jews to Berlin.

I love how she chose to die with dignity. She was made their slave, but still did her job well. He chose to execute her for no good reason. She gave her defense. Then..when it was aparent to her that it was no use..she didn't try to convince the officers, or beg or plead or cry. Just simply, "It will take more than that." In a tone that says she's lived without regret and is not afraid of them. Much respect.

Her name was Diana Reiter. REST IN PEACE DIANE!!! I will and millions more will never forget you.

The last clip is actually terrible. If this clip is meant to show Amon's personality, then you have to add the next couple seconds where he tells his people to do what that woman said. It is a crucial moment.

Probably. Those holding advanced degrees were specifically targeted by the Nazis. Nazis required complete conformity. The story's fascinating because it's a story of three German viewpoints. One is, if a population is useful to our goal, keep em. The other one is personal - the guard who shoots her was upset she made him look bad. Goeth is the psychopath. He kills her because it makes him feel powerful. My view he is a serial killer like Ted Bundy. Bundy wouldn't have cared less at Nazi propaganda, but it would provided an opportunity to kill without recourse.

Reuven Actually to further expand upon your analysis she was actually shot because her opinion on the matter, which was coming more or less as an order and appeal to göth had shown the commandant that this educated Jewish woman's job conflicted directly with current construction quotas and to have to tear down that building and start anew would certainly hamper meeting of said quotas/productivity. It was a pure on-the-spot business decision to shoot the lady. As a side note she must not have not been too learned in physics as she said right before her execution "it will take more than that", yet science proved her wrong as it took just that single bullet to pierce her skull and end her existence; however, I do submit that she may have speaking in figurative sense.

That's a very insightful analysis, and is certainly consistent with the story. My analysis was more based on Goeth's personality, his obsession with power and the Nazi's perception of academics. It's less well known, but most German phD's were killed because they likely would have opposed Hitler's policies. One of the reasons Jews were killed was because they adhere to a strict moral code. Thousands of Catholics were killed for this same reason. The Nazis used Christian symbols, but this was only propaganda to get the population on board. With the exception of a million protest of Nazi genocide in Berlin in 1940, anyone who quoted the New Testament to oppose Hitler was killed as if they were Jewish.

And she was NOT annoying, the only reason why she screamed like that is because nobody listened to her and she was concerned about the safety of the people. If the building would collapse, they would definitely kill her for that. So she screamed and warned them several times and they still shoot her.

The single brief look on the engineer's face at 2:36, as she realizes her life is about to end in seconds............ incredible acting in a single look - she thought that doing her job would keep her alive. when survivor Mila Pfefferberg was introduced to Ralph Fiennes on the set, she began shaking uncontrollably, as he reminded her too much of the real Amon Göth.

I was shown this film by a teacher who was a veteran of Vietnam. To this day, one of the most interesting teachers I’ve ever had-he had all kinds of wild stories. He paused this scene to talk about how it was one of the most realistic depictions of a shot to the head he’d seen in cinema, considering it’s not one of those “head rocks back and forth, body falls back” type of thing, but the way her body collapses.

2:35 I felt like it was almost implied that the soldier was going to lead her away from Goeth and then maybe lie and later tell him that he shot her. It seem liked the other soldiers felt she was too valuable to kill.

That thought flashed in my mind too, but it seems way too risky to be plausible. Where would he take her after he spared her life? He would be court martialed and executed for deliberately disobeying an order from a commanding officer. Unless Anon had an incredibly short term memory, it's unlikely he would forget who she was.

The other camps either killed the prisoners outright (Treblinka, Sobibor) or simply printed the numbers on the prisoner´s clothes (Buchenwald, Sachsenhausen). In this camp, it seems the prisoners were even referred to by name, which is quite unique.

He sees and treats this as a job. People do not shout or fly into rages when at work. Annoyance, frustration, tired, etc....yes. But to be a ranting lunatic would be embarrassing in front of his co workers which is even horrific when you think about it. Murder isn't being driven by wild rage or a complete loss of emotional control but here treated like paperwork to be filled out. That's way more frightening than one screaming lunatic. That can be dismissed as rare madness which very few individuals have. But this attitude? Murder isn't even important enough to be a big deal. Goeth sees mass murder daily as no different to a pen pusher filling out forms. That a nation state could reduce tens of thousands of people to treat murder as nothing more than irksome bureaucracy is more frightening than any horror movie because how little can you trust real people not to do this if the wrong circumstances/situations are in play within a society? Look at the Stanford experiment.

One of, if not the most realistic death scene I've ever seen in a movie. Just like in real life, not an overly dramatic, slow fall to the ground. Just instantly dead, with the lifeless body falling to the ground, looks eerily realistic.

We're not going to have arguments with these people 🥶

Ralph should have absolutely gotten the Oscar for best actor -playing one of the most hated POS in human history. In doing so he brought such passion and emphasis to the role people were going to hate hate him. Absolute kudos for a magnificent role.

Erm, no. Branko Lustig, “my number was A3317” winning for Best Picture was much better.

No matter what she had done, she would have been killed. She got shot for pointing out a problem, but if she stayed silent and the building had collapsed, she would have been held responsible and executed, since she was foreman of construction.

"I don't want to give you my cold." The way Ralph Fiennes pulls off acting halfway decent to going full-on unbelievable psycho in this movie. Should have won the Oscar that year.

It would have been smarter for her to keep her mouth shut tbh.

You can see Goeth contemplating when she sees the girl cold after hearing her name. He does this sometimes in the movie, and he hates it when he feels compassion.

I never noticed just how spot on the execution is in this. Granted, from close range the exit wound may have been a bit bigger (depending on the bullet/fragments trajectory after impacting both the back and front of the skull) in some cases however, I'd never noticed that her bangs move when it exits and after she lands, the blood spouts from her forhead in sync with her (failing) heartbeat 😮 jeez laweez that's crazy accurate.

This scene, and whole movie, truly shows Ralph Fienne's talent. Playing a character despicable beyond remorse in one of the most atrocious events in recent human history, he still is able to bring a comedic element to his character that is almost disconcerting to the viewer. Amazing performance.

2:45 I feel like the soldier drinking his coffee is an under-appreciated but crucial addition to Goeth's depiction. His hand trembles when he leads her to her execution, as if he's trying to keep calm his feelings on how wrong the situation is, but he's suppressing it because it means that he too could be on his knees, moments from death. What a movie, and what a performance from Ralph.

Schindlers list had some of the most realistic deaths I’ve seen in film, from watching mondo cane, gore videos, and film. Those deaths are very realistic, when people die they don’t have show stopping moments of heroism, it’s all over and black. Existence completely wiped and body completely lifeless, it’s sickening.

Ralph Fiennes was amazing in this role. Not just the dialogue but the mannerisms and little details. The way he smokes his cigarettes, his posture, his attitude, how he flips his hair. So convincing.

The way he walks her into the camera for the close up of her face. Move her not the camera. Brilliant and brilliant acting on the part of the young lady

Ralph perfectly combine charming & evilness. I barely watching his scene, makes my skin crawl.

Ralph Fiennes stole the show in this movie. Brilliant actor.

No death rattle, though. Whatever air was in her lungs would've been expelled, after she lost motor function. Also, the body tends to tense and straighten, before going limp. Otherwise, very realistic.

I love he says "I don't want to give you my cold", subtle detail of how "proper" the German culture is. A mix of brutality and being a true gentleman. Emphasizes how the Third Reich wished to be perceived.

A historian in a podcast said that the movie had to tone down the horror and suffering so the audience wouldn't be overwhelmed. Can't imagine how bad it actually was.

Fun fact: Amon Goeth’s ruthlessness was actually downplayed in the film. That’s right, he was actually WORSE in real life than how he’s portrayed in the movie. Simply because he was such a terrible person that the creators thought viewers will think it’d be unrealistic.

@@chloesworld2167 He could: he said the Jews had to be whipped two hundred times and had to count every time, if they made a mistake then they had to start over and they had to be calm, otherwise Göth would have cracked their skulls and killed them. He actually shot from his mansion several times EVERY day to train his way of shooting. From his clothing, when he went around the camp, Jews understood how many victims he would have done, because they were used to the daily horror and learned to differentiate it.

So much character development in this one scene, he chooses the scared girl because he likes the dominance aspect of subjugating someone so terrified of him. Then when his moment with her is interrupted by the foreman he takes out his frustrations by mercilessly killing her, the shot of Helen making it clear that this is also meant to be a "don't forget who's in charge here" message to her.

Ralph Fiennes is incredibly awesome at playing the bad guy. Voldemort, Dolarhyde and Goeth. He played all 3 flawlessly. Incredibly talented actor.

Forcing the viewer to look into her face was pretty effective and brilliant camera work.

That Jewish engineer's final words, she was so eloquent and poetic. I hope when I'm faced with death, I can be that dignified.

as sickening as it is to admit, those uniforms were slick. The atrocities undertaken in them? Not so.

The SS man with the floppy ears is actor Jochen Nickel who plays Oberscharfuhrer Wilhelm Kunde. 1993 was a busy year for Nickel and had to wear a German HEER uniform in Joseph Vilsmaier's more prestigious film "Stalingrad". Thomas Kretschmann is the best interpretation of German officers in Hollywood.

The way she collapses when shot was absolutely shocking. Brilliant piece of acting

Tommy lee Jones : The fugitive role beating Ralph Fiennes as the role of Amon Goth is the most sillier joke i would ever come through , It is total injustice from academy ... I never could understand what type of jury could not understand how to choose the right & appropriate candidate for such precious awards,i mean after all it is number one appreciation award for any actor in the entire world.. It matters a lot ,,, It breaks millions of hearts if not done in most justifiable way... Sametime i would like to appreciate the jury of choosing Anthony Hopkins for best actor award for the role Hannibal lecter though his presence in entire movie was under 20 minutes but still those minutes were more powerful than entire movies released in 1991 in entire world..jury got right this time But failed miserably by not recognizing the role played by Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goth....

Whenever Goeth enters the screen, even if he isn’t doing anything, the mood significantly darkens.

Goeth was one guy I would enjoy seeing drawn and quartered. Fiennes played that role perfectly.

They cut of the most important part of the scene. Right after shooting her Amon orders his men to do exactly what she was telling them to do.

Yeah contrast that to how we babysit everyone in America today and you start to see where countries divide and wars begin. The greatest achievements in human history came directly after WWII and a lot of that was thanks to the knowledge and mindset of the Germans.

Great inspiration so much I've liked this movie

The reflexive head jerk, fall to the ground, and spurts of blood are done so unbelievably well.

This movie was my introduction to Ralph Fiennes. I knew instantly that I was watching a truly extraordinary actor...given the many benevolent roles he has played since, it's all the more amazing how he could transform himself into the pure embodiment of evil that he portrayed in this film.

For all of you who might not know, this guy went on to play Lord Voldemort in the HP movies. A brilliant actor he is really.

Yes, the performance is so skilled and subtle you almost have to slow the video down to fully appreciate it. Right after he looks at Helen's hands, for a fraction of a second his eyes connect with hers and he almost appears kind. A fraction of a second later he blinks nervously, as if he is embarrassed of this weakness. His face immediately transitions from warm to stone-cold, and no longer looking at Helen he takes a long drag from his cigarette and seems to be contemplating whether to make Helen his choice, knowing full well that that may add to her suffering rather than reduce it. The following expressionless selection of Helen conveys a calculated victory of choosing apathy toward her, a soulless recognition that he doesn't want to care about her. The message is he truly does not care, that even that brief glimpse of apparent humanity was really just part of his psychopathic narcissism.

Such a powerful scene. Conjured up by the ultimate conjurer, Steven Spielberg. Ralph Fiennes merely milked it.

To kill an innocent woman like that out of sheer petulance-that just hurts my heart man! 😔😢😔

You gotta hand it to Hugo Boss, those officer uniforms look on point

@@ThomasNoname NO, he didn’t. Hugo Boss was a PRODUCER of uniforms, NOT a Designer! The Uniforms of the Wehrmacht were normal German uniforms in PRUSSIAN tradition. NOT designed specially. Only the SS Uniforms were designed specially. And those were designed by Karl Diebitsch, a SS officer. Hugo Boss had nothing to do with it except PRODUCING them. STOP this dumb hoax already.
