Because probably there isn't one. I mean there probably is a slight difference because of their different design and how they react to volume and gain changes, but in the end they do the same thing: take a signal, amplify it and give enough juice to the headphones. In this case exactly the same amount of juice. The basic difference is that do you want an oldschool discrete style amplifier because you get OCD from opamps as they MAY alter the sound (opamp rolling is a thing, they can be switched like tubes) or can you accept the fact that technology can move forward and you can do the same thing, or even better measurably, in smaller opamp chips and simpler overall circuit design.

There is no difference because there shouldn’t be one.

I was researching Schiit's amps specifically because I need more juice from my GSX1000, so damn was I surprised when you mentioned recommending this amp to someone who was having that very specific problem in this video!

Moral of the story: Get the pretty one.

True. Picking one boils down to psychological reasons. I’m getting the Heresy since it measures most accurate. Purely psychological reason even though it really doesn’t matter which one to get.

Thanks for this series of videos, Z. I actually owned a TP21 amp for years and years and years (way before your review of it), but never used it much (as the headphones I've had were "meh" and I never had a desire to). And since I've followed you, I've gotten my hands on a decent amount of budget-level cans (like the Bowers & Wilkins P7) and great audio information that I wish I had many, many years ago. Needless to say, after this amp series and going back and seeing your scathing review on the TP21...I decided it was time to retire it, lololololololol, especially considering what modern amps can do nowadays. So thanks to you, I decided to pick up the Heresy and it should be here soon (along with a shiny new German pair of 2nd Gen B&O BeoPlay H6s). Thanks again for your videos! :)

@Z Reviews Thank you for the detailed review! I have been looking for an entry level HP amp and leaning toward a Schiit (probably the Heresy). I am a bit concerned over the varying playback quality you experienced depending on the headphone you where using. What price point / brands /models would you recommend moving up to that would have greater consistency across different headphones? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us enthusiast.

Speaking of Zechs and headphones, I highly recommend the Mars Volta offshoot called Zechs Marquise.

This is why I use an amp like the Garage1217 Project Polaris. Each headphone responds differrntly to various gain, resistance, amps, etc. I like having the ability to adjust to headphones rather than judging headphones based on just high/low gain settings.

The fulla, hel, and magni Hersey are the same design. They just scale up with amplification with more op amps respectively. The magni 3+ is a sexy implementation of a class A/B amplifier.

If you say these amps just scale up with amplification, does that mean sensitive headphones that don't require a lot of power (Fidelio X2, namely) won't benefit much from, say, a Heresy over a Fulla?

@@selbi182 I have the fulla and literally if you have headphones that are below 75 ohms ( guessing on my moddest collection) you literally can't tell the difference. On IEMs with the heresy, you can barely use 1/4 of the volume nob with the kz zs10 pro's. So the fulla is fine. Literally the only difference on the amplification side is how many cascading op amps you have for amplification. Only thing that the heresy will give you is the ability to use a different DAC and put a EQ in the middle for lower impedance headphones. If you game and want a simple setup I keep going back too, fulla 3 + Sennheiser pc37x and know you have a setup that sounds as good as a schiit stack without extra power you don't need.

People talk about e sounds of these as being very good but these are amps so would the modi 3 produce a better sound/soundstage than these seeing it is a dac specifically and these are just amps?

“Z”, do you still have your magni 3(not plus) around? Do they use the same 15vac1500ma brick or the old 14vac 1500ma brick? (searched your magni 2/2U/3 video and they used 14vac brick) If your old mangni 3 uses the 14vac brick, would there be any sonic differences if you use the 15vac brick of the 3+ on the 3?

I am curious what you have to say about the Schiit Hel.. I had just purchased one but haven't received it yet but was just curious to see what you would have to say about it.

I run a apogee Rosetta Ad/DA 200. Mostly looking for something sterile using my Athm50s and sometimes I use sonaworks software on my master buss. But my living situation is 80% headphone tracking and 20% monitors. I was actually looking at the Capi headphone amp for my API lunchbox and also the costly Rupert Neve Headphone amp. I need something high quality that’s flat and not really boosting frequency. Some people over at gearslutz forum, told me to park at these before spending 300-500 on a CAPI build or Neve one. What’s your thought for using these for pro audio tracking? It won’t really be used to listen to other artist music, but purely studio.

I am grinning from ear to ear with my new Magni Heresy and Modi 3+ and HD 600. My plan is to now get a Magni 3+, Modi Multibit, and Loki Mini+. I agree with you about the Heresy and how interesting to compare these headphone amps that are so similar, but with different topologies and variant sound depending on headphones, gain, and volume settings. For me, getting both is a no-brainer, because of the flexibility to use and enjoy whatever suits my mood on any given day. Thank you for your review! Good one.

@@mauricioyoung6668 I seriously enjoyed my Magni Heresy and Modi 3 with my Sennheiser HD600 headphones for several months. The sound was perfect to my ears. Loved that setup, and was gearing up to get the Magni 3 and Loki Mini+, when personal circumstances led me to give my setup to a relative who had gone without good gear and sound for decades. I knew how good it really was and how right my decision to gift them when I demonstrated the setup to my relative during a visit. His eyes nearly teared up, and he wanted to keep listening for a long time, going through his favorite playlist of music from multiple genres. So, I am back to square one, and planning to again get the Heresy and Magni 3/Modi 3/Loki Mini + stack. You simply cannot go wrong with the Magni Heresy/Modi 3 stack, and my confidence is solid that the same would go with the Magni 3 and Loki Mini +. All the best!

I'm still getting my feet wet in hifi, my coworker gave me a dragonfly red and I've been using it with my Blon-03's. Looking forward to getting my stack though, I'll most likely get the magni and loki first and just use my dragonfly as the dac for now. Thanks for the reply, take care homie!

M-da. Nice choice of background, sir. Guy's an awesome artist. Also, went with Heresy and Modi 3. Excellent combo. Have it running off a splitter with a Liquid Spark too. The Schiits are black so they match my aesthetic. Might have gotten a Magni 3+ if it was offered in black at the time, but eh.

Alright... I grabbed a heresy after watching this, and I've been enjoying it with my HD650's..... Today I plugged in Grado SR225, flipped down to low gain, and started listening. It wasn't bad, I was enjoying myself... and then the Ghost of Zeos past starting whispering in my ear about the wacky gain stuff on these amps and I decided to flip it up to high gain. Holy Grado, it made these things pop and sparkle. Interesting.

Probably because of the volume. Humans are sensitive to even 0.1db in a subconcious level. Low gain offers cleaner signal, it's superior.

Hello. Has anydody have any idea if I can connect one of these amps to my Onkyo home speaker amp and use the bass and treble settings on my Onkyo please? Also my cd and record players are connected through my Onkyo but want to be able to listen to these through my headphones but through one of the little amps and control the eq through my Onkyo. Thank you.

Imma buy the Heresy, I have the fostex t50rp mkIII and the audio technica m40x I wanted to but the t20 rp.. so seems like a good idea.

I got that too. Looks like I'm getting HD6XX'S and a Heresy.

Looking at the PCBs on their website, the magni 3+ is supposed to have an LED on it, so yours might be borked. Also the differences between the two circuit boards is pretty massive, even someone who doesn't know anything about circuitry can tell. If I could find out what model the black chips are on the heretical edition pcb, I'd beable to say the exact difference in construction but the pictures they took of it are way too blurry to find out.

I have a monolith liquid spark.. do you think its worth the upgrade to one of these? using sennheiser 6xx

I have the Beyerdynamic MMX 300's and was thinking the Heresy would be the better option based on some initial comments about the two. Would that be right?

Your review of FX Audio DAC-X6 got me to pull the trigger. My previous setup was using really old computer speakers with a headphone jack. That setup gets louder all the way up. But the new FX headphone "amp" is bad news. It's much quieter. You can't overdrive the phones to distortion. (And I've tried Koss, Timeless, the OG Tin P1, etc.) The volume stops increasing about 6. It doesn't get any louder at 10. So now I'm considering one of these S. amps!

let's hope he replies, so I've had the schiit stack for abt a month now and thinking about upgrading to something 2x the price to get the most out of the 1990 pro. around 4-450$ is it worth it and would I notice a difference? if so what's a good stack?

As far as I can tell from the huge "Add to Cart"-button on Emotiva's website, the A-100 still exists. Let me give you another word of advise with the T50RPs and A-100: You don't need the A-100, it is just chasing the last 1%

Do yourself a favor and just go ahead and order the Mayflower mod kit. It's easy to do it yourself and made a great headphone so much better. I have had my T50RPs for over 3 years (modded them a few weeks after I bought them) and it's still my go-to headphones. I use them more than anything else I own, I love them so much.

I'm considering getting the DT1990 pros with a passive in line filter that fixes the highs. Which amp here should I go for, I'm guessing the heresy?

I just got the HD660s, looking to upgrade from a fiio e10k dac/amp. I'm having a hard time choosing a dac&. I think the hd660s need some extra bass though so while I was initially considering the asgard with optional dac, seems like would be better off to split it so if desired i can add an EQ into the chain (any suggestions for those?). For the DAC the Modi (3 or multibit, not sure?) looks like a good choice for DAC but then for the amp not sure if the Magni 3+ or Heresey would be better for the hd660s. Seems like the heresey is better choice for sennheiser 6-- series? soo many choices! I could buy a bunch of different things and see what i like most then return the rest but i don't want to be that guy....

You’re not hallucinating, the old magnis did have power leds on the front. My magni 2 (non-uber) has a white led on the front and an orange led on the inside. I like the detail of making the led red on the heresy though, but it’s dumb that they removed it on the 3+

I have a schiit stack v2 non-uber, and I’m very happy with it and don’t plan on upgrading, but fuck I wish I could have it in black and red. The classic silver and grey schiit design looks great, but my whole desk setup is black and red themed, so the heresy with a matching modi (if they make that? Idk) would look way better

Got such a fright when you hit the camera with the headphones haha. I impulsively moved to one side to avoid it too.

hey zeos i got the sennheiser 58x jubilee which do you think will power them better? Would they pair with the heresy better since I've read that the 58x jubilee are really similar to the HD 600s

To make your schiit even more confusing, how does it compare to the Hel? Seems it would have more functionality and allow for use straight from a PC. Compare that schiit!!

Recommendation for Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro (250 ohm) & DT 770 (80 ohm)? I have the fulla 3, thinking to upgrade to either a heresy or magni 3+ with a modi3+.

I just got the heresy for my shop 9500 and enjoy them. It is my first headphone amp so I have nothing to compare it to other than my home theater receiver. (Laugh if you want but I am new to the headphone thing.)

I just bought the Schiit stack Magni 3+, Modi and Loki, I spent 3 weeks trying to decide between the 3+ and Heresy, never thought to buy both, so pulling the trigger on the Heresy now, why not. Damn you. :)

@@ZE0SPantera if you keep the magni's around a little longer I'm sure you will find the Asguard 3 and magni 3+ sound the same. Where the fulla 3, hel, and heresy (low gain) will all sound the same.

Does the gain of the THX 789 also make a difference? I just have it on the max gain and volume all the time but the RME ADI-2 DAC on the lowest (-5dB line) output because I control the volume with that. the gain switch on the DAC is in a menu, so I cant overpower anything like if iam accidentally go from lowest to highest gain on the AMP i figured.

FAR FAR LESS.. But don't overgain the 789 input or you get clipping on the highest setting. So -5 or a bit lower on the ADI

Zeos! How about you test the headphones most likely the people who are in the market for $100 amps will use? Most people buying $100 amps have $150-350 cans. I don't think people looking for a $100 amp are going to have $1100 or even $500 cans.

The flip side to that is with the headphones he's using it's far easier to hear and identify flaws. The JDS atom for example tends to sound fine with low end or high end headphones... as long as it has the power to properly drive them. The reality is if these amps can run the cans he's using, your lower end stuff'll be fine. All I'm getting out of this video is stick with the JDS atom or Liquid Spark in the $100 bracket. Or just do what I did and say screw it and buy the SMSL SP200.

I'd love to see how the HE 4XX pairs with each of these although I probably wouldn't get either one anyways. I have a Magni2 Uber and I like it a lot but I feel like the HE 4XX needs a bit more power so I've been contemplating getting a THX AAA 789 or SMSL SP200 and getting some balanced cables and really push some power to these things.

Hmmm. My Magni 3 barely gets warm. With certain earphones it does at times but I’ve been burning in my Moondrop Starfield iems since Saturday night and my Magni 3 is cool. My Asgard 2 gets hot enough to burn your skin. That goes off the second I’m done using it.

Schiit designed them so you have to buy both. They state on their website anyone would be happy with either as their both designed well but to base your purchase on your priority of design topology. I’ll pick up a Heresey to sample my first worthy op amp design.

Hey Zeos, would it be sane to use Tin T2's with these, they are 16 ohms? I bought the Tin after watching your review.

So it seems you tested this with the HD600's, I just ordered the HD6XX's and was looking at the Magni and wasn't sure which would be better for these headphones lol. So I'm guessing the heresey should be better for the HD6XX's, at least I would guess it'd be similar to the HD600's.

Not enough power. Sounds muddy and vailed to me on the HD650. I have now bought so many cheap solid state amps, and none of them have worked good with the HD650. You need to spend money on a good, and very powerful amp to make them sing. But when you give them power, ohh do they sing. I am going to go ahead and call it. For the HD650/HD6XX you need an OTL Tube Amp. Get the SCHIIT Valhalla or a Darkvoice 336SE. I own both, I like the Darkvoice Better, but only after I spent $80 on tubes. At that price, you can get the Valhalla and need nothing else. But the Darkvoice is more powerful. And if you feel like tube rolling, you only need to purchase a single pre amp tube instead of two. BTW, after having both the Magni 3+ and the Heresy side by side, I have to tell you the Magni3+ sounds better overall. Neutral Warm. While the Heresy is a little shouty. I understand now what Schiit says about better measurements doesn’t always mean better sounding. The Heresy measures as good an distortion free and low noise as way more expensive amps. Yet the Magni3+ is more enjoyable and less fatiguing. So that gets my vote. But if your main headphones are the HD650/HD6XX? Get a Darkvoice.

Would you choose the Archel2 PRO by Geshelli Labs or the Heresy?

Amazon link you added the image shows that the Magin 3+ has a power light on the PCB board and hole in the case!!!! So why not on your one???

@@michaelpowell4823 just got my heresy about two weeks ago, it doesn't have a front power light smh 😔 realistically though it's hardly a deal-breaker, just a little nice-to-have that's missing. There's still a light on the PCB that shines through the vent holes in the top.

i have the heresy and my gain switch will go up and down but doesnt stay in either position, and only actually changes the gain 1 out of every 15-20 tires if i hold it in the up or down position bc it wont stay. can i fix this or is it trash

The Heresy is about as good as the Atom, but has a bit more power depending on impedance. The two models have different volume control accuracy, hence why the similar power in different gains may sound a bit different.

i am torn between these 2. Honestly i think i will just get the Heresy simply on looks lol. I have the SPH9500's right now but will be getting others. Oh i also have the WH100XM3's and a EarStudio ES100 MK2

I have both amps, and they are different. The Magni 3+ is definitely smoother.

New to the audio world. I’m planning on getting DT 770 Pro 80 ohm and the Modi/Heresey stack to pair with my iPhone as a daily desktop user. Am I thinking about this correctly?

Yes, although get the Custom Studio instead of the DT 770.

@_Tofyter _ Either would be fine, heard the Magni 3+ is a bit warmer in tone than the Heresy but they are mostly the same.

This would be my first headphone amp ever. Along with my first dad ever. Which do you recommend. I currently have a pair of sennheiser 598 planning on getting something better later on budget 300-400. I want to know what would you recommend, between the shiit magni or shiit vali? Then between shiit modi or shiit modi multibit? I plan on later getting the shiit vidar and a pair of either keff ls50 or svs ultra and tying them all together. What would you recommend. I appreciate any answer I can get from anyone. This would be my first foray into the audiophile world someone please help.

Honestly if I had 400 I would get a 789 and a beater dac like the modi. I'm rocking heresy and modi and I'm fine with it, but that would be my next jump up.

What DAC are you using with this setup?

I know this is old but my sundaras sound terrible using the 3+ with a low input voltage, but with higher input voltage it sounds phenominal. Low gain has ever so slightly more soundstage but less detail.

OK So im looking to get the SMSL Sanskrit 10th and these to power a Beyerdynamic DT 880 pro 600 ohm. Will this do?

So can someone help a guy out. I don't consider myself an audiophile. My nicest headphones are Beyerdynamic TI's and some AKG limited editions. I also have some cheaper headphones like the 1More Quad Earbuds and some V-Moda M100 Crossfades (My favorites). I am on my computer 18-20 hours a day. I need a headphone Amp/Dac combo that I can use with music and gaming. I have to be @ 100% volume to be medium volume on the BD and and AKG, even the smaller more efficient ones don't get loud enough. I'm leaning towards the Schitt Fulla 3 Gaming, but I can't really figure if even it can power my 600 ohm headphones properly. Should I been looking at the Heresy? Does that even have a DAC? Also, do modern 2019/2020 high end gaming motherboards have better DACs? Do I even need a DAC?

I have the Magni 3+ driving my 58x jubilees, I think the low gain sounds warmer and more interesting because it seems to distort the sound a bit but the high gain comes out clear and detailed. Glad I got it as my first headphone amp, really happy with it.

Thanks for sharing. I've got a Magni 3+ and a pair of 58x Jubilees on the way to me and this video had me a little worried I should have gotten a Heresy.

Note to ALL headphone amp designers. Put the volume knob on the opposite side, away from the headphone jack!!!!!! Thank you

If instead of buying both, and sell one, get the Asgard 3 which is 200 bucks?

You'll have to discount shipping costs, which you'll be paying at all times. My hint when purchasing from Schiit: concentrate (plan) your purchase. It's $20-30 per shipping and that cost sums up over time. PS.: At amazon, shipping cost is embedded in final price (at least the times I've checked).

@@FabioKasper You can buy these from amazon prime. They are 119 but you won't pay return shipping and you'll get the full 119 back on the one you return. Much smarter way to try them.
